As it turns out, there are so many liberals in Seattle, and so much beer, that our fair city hosts two Drinking Liberally chapters. The West Seattle branch meets tonight, and every Wednesday, 7 pm, at West 5, 4539 California Ave SW.
I intend to stop by tonight and see if the West Seattle folk drink any more liberally than the Montlake folk. Hope to see some of you there.
(Oh… and just so you know, the Spokane chapter also meets tonight, 7:30 pm, at the Red Lion Pub, 126 N Division St.)

As a matter-a-fact, I am from the mid-west (Colorado to be exact)…and it’s a shame that folks don’t utilize the bar time around here. I can’t say I was disappointed the DL group wasn’t there …I did find it humorous that they would call themselves that, and be gone hours BEFORE closing time. And to be honest, I wouldn’t care if it was a righty or lefty bar….just as long as they’re OPEN after midnight! Some of us work the late shift and still enjoy a cold one.

When I first moved to Seattle 30 years ago, I used to play softball and drink beer at the Scoop Tavern on about 60th and Sandpoint Way. They even had a golf tournament called the Scoop Invitational where a Rainier Beer Truck pulled to Foster Golf Course and delivered 78 cases of beer for 77 golfers. Sadly, that was the last tournament as 4 golf carts were driven into the river along with several sets of rental golf clubs. They didn’t appreciate having to hire a tow truck to come in and pull the carts out.
I don’t know if you have been here long enough to remember the old Rainier Beer commercials….but our softball team did the one called Running of the Rainiers. Those huge beer bottles were made out of some kind of fibreglass and it was filmed on a 90 degree day. Damn it was hot…it took the whole day to shoot. Lots of beer.

I just saw on Google News that an Al Qaeda-related group has claimed responsibility for the attacks. They claim that they will go after every country with troops in Iraq. So, yes, it largely is fallout from the Brits going into Iraq with the U.S.
The fact of the matter is that the unnecessary action in Iraq has caused a massive increase in terrorist and attacks around the world. You cannot kill on the order of 100,000 innocent people without expecting a small percentage of very angry relative to take revenge.

I read a news story yesterday about the shabby condition the CG fleet is in. Some of our CG vessels need 18 hours a day of maintenance just to go on routine patrol. Many of these vessels are 40 to 50 years old. They can’t communicate with each other by radio and use radar sets purchased by crew members from recreational boating stores. One CG cutter couldn’t even spot boats 2 miles away. Bush’s response? Extend CG fleet replacement to 25 years, to save money. This is not surprising. In the aftermath of 9/11, the White House and Republicans in Congress consistently voted against homeland security funding.
