The Seattle chapter of Drinking Liberally meets tonight (and every Tuesday), 8PM at the Montlake Ale House, 2307 24th Avenue E. Perhaps we’ll even do another podcast tonight after a several week lapse.
If you’re finding it hard to stay interested in politics now that the election is over and the Holiday season is upon us, the least you can do is stay interested in beer.
Not in Seattle? Washington liberals will also be drinking tonight in the Tri-Cities. Here’s a full run down of WA’s eleven Drinking Liberally chapters, including our newest chapter in the former Republican stronghold of Mercer Island:

Meanwhile, the shrill little voices of the insane right continue to write their “terrorists love Democrats” letters to newspapers around the state, such as this one by Timothy May of Vancouver in the Vancouver Columbian:
” … The Democrats are openly discussing ‘cutting and running’ in the war on terror, simply to prove Bush was wrong and to punish Bush and his supporters. Don’t say you weren’t warned about this pre-election — that a vote for the Democrats was a vote for a terrorist. …”
http://tinyurl.com/y3nwlo
Roger Rabbit Commentary: Of course I didn’t quote the whole thing. Didn’t need to. You already know what it says: Democrats are “hacks” with “their collective heads in the sand” who offer America’s “sworn enemies” polices of “appeasement and surrender” blah blah blah. He concluded with, “May God help us all.” Well, God just did, and thank Him that in a few more weeks these blathering blowhards will no longer be running our country. The mess they’ve made of the war against terrorism (and everything else) speaks for itself.

Roger Rabbit spews:
I know righties don’t support the Fairness Doctrine, but as this is a liberal blog, it’s only fair that I post a letter representing a diverse viewpoint. Gerald R. Johnson of Vancouver wrote to the Columbian:
” … [T]he Bush administration’s mistakes in Iraq inspire awe. They stand in lonely splendor like Himalayan peaks, the envy of blunders everywhere that aspire to greatness.
“Achievements on this scale don’t occur overnight. The Manhattan Project took years. The moon landings climaxed a decade of manned space travel. The Bushies reached Olympian heights within months of the invasion.
“These immortals have earned bragging rights that few in history could legitimately rival.”

Norma G. Haggerty of Vancouver wrote this gushy sentimental letter to the Columbian:
“Let us hope and pray that Republicans and Democrats in Congress and state legislatures will … stop the political bickering. The najority of voters want our representatives to show the rest of the world that democracy works.
“We want peace …. We want our representatives to face up to the reality of global warming …. We want to eliminate hunger and homelessness in the U.S. and to help other nations take care of poverty-stricken parts of their own populations.
“No matter what political label we wear, we want to solve those problems and many others. We are all on the same side: the United States of America, where all men and women have equal voting rights — rich or poor, black or white. Let’s all work together.”
(same link)
Roger Rabbit Commentary: Very touching, Norma. But the wingnuts don’t want any of that stuff, and are not on “same side” as the rest of us. They’re think we’re the “the enemy.” How the hell can we “work together” with them? It’s impossible. We won the election, and now we’re going to dump their agenda and enact ours. That’s what elections are all about: Crush the bastards.

MUSLIMS KICKED OFF FLIGHT FOR PRAYING IN TERMINAL
“Six Imams Removed From Twin Cities Flight
“Muslim Group Calls for Investigation of Airline Staff, Security
“By STEVE KARNOWSKI, AP
“MINNEAPOLIS (Nov. 21) — The Council on American-Islamic Relations called Tuesday for an investigation into the behavior of airline staff and airport security in the removal of six Muslim scholars from a US Airways flight a day earlier.
“A passenger raised concerns about the imams — three of whom said their normal evening prayers in the airport terminal before boarding the Phoenix-bound plane, according to one — through a note passed to a flight attendant, according to Andrea Rader, a spokeswoman for US Airways. …
“The six were returning from a conference in Minneapolis of the North American Imams Federation, said Omar Shahin of Phoenix, president of the group. ‘They took us off the plane, humiliated us in a very disrespectful way,’ Shahin said after the incident.
“Shahin said Tuesday that three members of the group prayed in the terminal before the six boarded the plane. They entered individually, except for one member who is blind and needed to be guided, Shahin said. Once on the plane, the six did not sit together, he said.
“‘We did nothing’ on the plane, Shahin said.
“The six were among passengers who boarded Flight 300, bound for Phoenix, around 6:30 p.m. Monday, airport spokesman Pat Hogan said.
“Police were called after the captain and airport security workers asked the men to leave the plane and the men refused, Rader said. Shahin said no one asked the six to leave until police arrived, when the group complied. …
“When Shahin went back to the airport Tuesday morning, a ticketing agent told him his payment for Monday’s flight had been refunded and the airline wouldn’t sell more tickets to him or the other imams. An airline spokesman in Arizona said he wasn’t aware of the ticketing decision and could not comment. …
“‘Unfortunately, this is a growing problem of singling out Muslims or people perceived to be Muslims at airports, and it’s one that we’ve been addressing for some time,’ council spokesman Ibrahim Hooper said.
“Hooper said the meeting drew about 150 imams from all over the country, and that those attending included Rep.-elect Keith Ellison, D-Minn., who just became the first Muslim elected to Congress. Shahin said they went as far as notifying police and the FBI about their meeting in advance. … ”

“37 Percent of U.S. Births Out of Wedlock

Actually, devout Muslims are required to pray several times every day. Most buildings open to the public anywhere in a Muslim country will have a small room dedicated to prayer. Several times a day, the call to prayer is heard in most Muslim cities, and most people stop what they are doing, unroll a small mat, and pray. If you bothered to find out anything about the religion, you would know that.
Not to mention the fact that many Christians will pray prior to boarding a flight. It is not all that strange to see people praying in airports. If a Priest or Minister were to be seen praying in an airport, nobody would think twice about it. Many airports have chapels just for that purpose.
It seems that only Muslims cannot pray in an airport.
So no, you are not a very tolerant person. You’re a bigot.

More Evidence Of ‘Anti-Terrorist’ Snooping Abuses
“Military Documents Hold Tips on Antiwar Activities
“By ERIC LICHTBLAU and MARK MAZZETTI
“Published: November 21, 2006
“WASHINGTON, Nov. 20 — An antiterrorist database used by the Defense Department in an effort to prevent attacks against military installations included intelligence tips about antiwar planning meetings held at churches, libraries, college campuses and other locations, newly disclosed documents show.
“One tip in the database in February 2005, for instance, noted that ‘a church service for peace’ would be held in the New York City area the next month. Another entry noted that antiwar protesters would be holding ‘nonviolence training’ sessions at unidentified churches in Brooklyn and Manhattan. …
“The head of the office that runs the military database … said Monday that material on antiwar protests should not have been collected …. ‘I don’t want it, we shouldn’t have had it, not interested in it,’ said Daniel J. Baur, the acting director of the counterintelligence field activity unit … at the Defense Department. …
“Mr. Baur said that those operating the database had misinterpreted their mandate and that … an antiterrorist database became … a catch-all for … protests against the military presence in Iraq. …
Once the problem was discovered, he said, … more than 180 entries in the database related to war protests were deleted from the system ….
“Mr. Baur was responding to the latest batch of documents produced by the military under a Freedom of Information Act request brought by the American Civil Liberties Union and other groups. The A.C.L.U. planned to release the documents publicly on Tuesday, and officials with the group said they would push for Democrats, newly empowered in Congress, to hold formal hearings about the … database.
“Ben Wizner, a lawyer for the A.C.L.U. in New York, said the new documents suggested that the military’s efforts to glean intelligence on protesters went beyond what was previously known. …
“The leader of one antiwar group mentioned repeatedly in the latest military documents provided to the A.C.L.U. said he was skeptical that the military had ended its collection of material on war protests. ‘I don’t believe it,’ said the leader, Michael T. McPhearson, a former Army captain who is the executive director of Veterans for Peace, a group in St. Louis. …
“The latest … documents showed that the military used a variety of sources to collect intelligence leads on antiwar protests, including an agent in the Department of Homeland Security, Google searches on the Internet and e-mail messages forwarded by apparent informants with ties to protest groups.
“In most cases, entries in the … database acknowledged that there was no specific evidence indicating the possibility of terrorism or disruptions at the antiwar events …. One entry on Mr. McPhearson’s group …, for instance, described a protest … at which members handed out antimilitary literature and set up hundreds of white crosses to symbolize soldiers killed in Iraq.”

“Karl Rove is still arguing that the hot issues of this election … are only ‘transitory.’ He’s ignoring deep fissures in his party. Neocons have been discredited and theocons dispirited. Libertarians feel betrayed …. In the Schiavo case, … Republicans drove a wedge through their own ranks. Same with immigration …. Most important, … the GOP’s big tent … contained none of the hope and optimism essential to success in American politics. Fear failed.
“It failed among the young (18 to 29), who were evenly divided four years ago, but this time gave the Democrats a 20-point edge. It failed among Hispanics, who favored Democrats by 69 to 30 percent. And it even failed among white soccer moms and office-park dads, who turned the American suburbs an unrecognizable shade of blue. The 49-state GOP landslides of 1972 and 1984 are now distant memories ….
“To recover, conservatives plan to return to what they call the ‘core principles’ of small government and lower taxes. But there’s a reason they abandoned budget balancing: it’s a loser politically. There just aren’t many votes in it, and that’s why Republicans didn’t cut spending.
“People want the government to deliver for them. Without earmarks — which will now flow to … Democrats — and the protection-racket money they got from selling out to lobbyists, Republicans might have lost an additional 20 seats. More than two dozen GOP incumbents won by six points or less and are vulnerable next time.
“Their peril has its origins in Bush’s highly divisive effort to intensify the conservative movement instead of governing from the center. After the razor-thin 2000 election, he listened to shortsighted advice from pollster Matthew Dowd that ‘swing’ voters were extinct and success lay in turning out ‘the base.’ But more than one third of American voters identify themselves as independents …. Smart politicians have always known that the G spot of the American body politic is in the middle.
“So the Conservative Era is over ….”

Has anyone besides Alter (and me) noticed that Republicans, as a minority party, can no longer deliver the goods for lobbyists? That means their corporate special interest money will dry up. That they can no longer deliver for constituents? That means votes will dry up. The GOP is truly fucked … TRULY FUCKED!!!
The GOPers have tried to spend this election as “normal” mid-term losses. Wrong. As I pointed out in a previous thread, the GOP went into this election with a 4.5 million vote advantage from voter challenges, vote suppression, dirty tricks, and outright cheating. It wasn’t enough to overcome the tsunami of voter discontent. They also had a huge redistricting advantage. That wasn’t enough either.
In other words, if the GOP had competed on a level playing field, they wouldn’t have lost 30-odd seats in the House — it would have been more like 70 or 80.
And going into the 2008 election, they have TWICE as many incumbent Senators up for re-election as the Democrats. The math, plus a careful analysis of where those seats are, argues for the Democrats picking up another half-dozen Senate seats in the next election cycle to further cement their Senate majority. And there will be a ton of vulnerable Republican congressmen in 2008.
Sure, the Democrats have to be careful. They have to govern responsibility. They have to be responsive to the public’s needs. But Democrats are good at those things — that’s why they were the majority party for most of the last 75 years. And the Republicans have demonstrated, vividly and unforgettably, that they either can’t or won’t govern wisely and responsibly. They’ve proved to the American people that they’re thieves, liars, and hypocrites.
Sayonara, wingnuts … don’t let the door hit your ass on your way back to your planet of origin. The alien invasion, the war of the worlds, is over. The humans won, the alien pigfuckers lost.

LEST WE FORGET …
This Newsweek column by Alter is almost a year old, but it worth posting again to remind us what we won last week, and what the stakes are in the next two years.
“Bush’s Snoopgate
“The president was so desperate to kill The New York Times’ eavesdropping story, he summoned the paper’s editor and publisher to the Oval Office. But it wasn’t just out of concern about national security.
“By Jonathan Alter
“Newsweek
“Dec. 19, 2005 – Finally we have a Washington scandal that goes beyond sex, corruption and political intrigue to big issues like security versus liberty and the reasonable bounds of presidential power. President Bush came out swinging on Snoopgate — he made it seem as if those who didn’t agree with him wanted to leave us vulnerable to Al Qaeda — but it will not work. We’re seeing clearly now that Bush thought 9/11 gave him license to act like a dictator ….
“No wonder Bush was so desperate that The New York Times not publish its story on the National Security Agency eavesdropping on American citizens without a warrant, in what lawyers outside the administration say is a clear violation of the 1978 Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act. I learned … that on Dec. 6, Bush summoned Times publisher Arthur Sulzberger and executive editor Bill Keller to the Oval Office in a futile attempt to talk them out of running the story … one can only imagine the president’s desperation.
“The problem was not that the disclosures would compromise national security, as Bush claimed at his press conference … there is simply no evidence, or even reasonable presumption, that this is so. And rather than the leaking being a ‘shameful act,’ it was the work of a patriot inside the government who was trying to stop a presidential power grab.
“No, Bush was desperate to keep the Times from running this important story — which the paper had already inexplicably held for a year — because he knew that it would reveal him as a law-breaker. He insists he had ‘legal authority derived from the Constitution and congressional resolution authorizing force.’ But the Constitution explicitly requires the president to obey the law. And the post 9/11 congressional resolution authorizing ‘all necessary force’ in fighting terrorism was made in clear reference to military intervention. It did not scrap the Constitution and allow the president to do whatever he pleased … in the name of fighting terrorism. …
“This will all play out eventually in congressional committees and in the United States Supreme Court. If the Democrats regain control of Congress, there may even be articles of impeachment introduced. Similar abuse of power was part of the impeachment charge brought against Richard Nixon in 1974. …
” … [T]he president knew publication would cause him great embarrassment and trouble for the rest of his presidency. It was for that reason — and less out of genuine concern about national security — that George W. Bush tried so hard to kill the New York Times story.”

Roger Rabbit Commentary: You all know what the wingnut position is: The big story is stopping terrorism, not quibbling over technical violations of the Constitution or federal law. They might have had a point IF the Bushies were doing an effective job of fighting terrorism. But that argument doesn’t work for them, given how badly they’ve botched the war on terrorism. The best defense they have going for them is that they’re so fucking incompetent they did only limited damage to our rights.
Roger Rabbit spews:
To prove I’m a fair and balanced bunny, I’m gonna give a wingnut columnist some equal space here. A guy named Rich Tucker disputes Alter’s assessment this election was the death knell of conservatism. Tucker does this by spinning the new Democratic majority as “conservative” (and, in the same breath, “hypocritical”) because they want to do something about the alternative minimum tax, which is increasing hitting the middle class. Then Tucker says,
“Businessweek adds that the AMT was originally ‘aimed at 155 people.’ That’s what’s truly ridiculous. Just as lawmakers shouldn’t pass earmarks aimed at helping a particular small group, they shouldn’t pass tax bills aimed at punishing a particular small group, either.”
http://tinyurl.com/tpug4
No — I’ll tell you what’s ridiculous … the AMT was passed to keep extremely rich people from using tax loopholes to PAY NO TAX, none whatsoever. And Tucker calls that “punishing” those rich tax dodgers? Making them pay something, more than zero, is punitive? Give me a fucking break.
No wonder the wingnuts are discredited and voters are leaving them in droves. If Tucker is representative of the conservative intelligentsia, then the rot set in long ago and all that happened last week is that the hull planks caved in and the sea water rushed into the bilge and their rotted ship sank.

A very good friend of mine once defined a bigot as someone who is ignorant of his own ignorance. You’ve managed to take it a step further: having acquired a pittance of knowledge, you imagine that you possess vast wealth.
Somehow, merely labelling you a bigot seems inadequate, for, surely, you should have known better.

Or do you think the Apostle Paul had the best answer (preferred that no one get married)?
Be carefull, your argument is a very slippery slope. You need to be rather exact and precise when you respond. Also, don’t confuse Biblical commands with cultural precepts. Although the Bible and the Koran are often used to enforce what is essentially a cultural precept, it is often done so in error.

Ah, Mr. Sucks. A point, and a couple of questions.
First, on your comments about more than two consenting adults getting married. The Bible specifically authorizes polygamy in several places, although it does say that you still have to treat the first wife decently.
Exodus 21:10 – “If he take him another wife; her food, her raiment, and her duty of marriage, shall he not diminish.”
I never have been able to understand the folks that are so determined to enforce the restrictions in one part of the Old Testament, but are willing to ignore others.
For example, are you wearing clothing made of two (or more) kinds of thread? Gotta love those poly-cotton shirts, but getting stoned to death just to avoid ironing is a bit much. (Leviticus 19:19)
Oh, and my son got a bit mouthy with me the other day, but I really like the kid. Is it ok if I just beat him, or must I put him to death? (Leviticus 20:9 – “For every one that curseth his father or his mother shall be surely put to death”) This doesn’t seem to give me much of a choice.
Oh, and if I am advising my neighbor about selling his daughter into slavery, as authorized by Exodus 21:7, what kind of a price should I tell him he should get for her?
My own understanding of the Bible is that God put certain restrictions on the early Hebrews and gave them certain rules because of where they were in their spiritual path at the time, just as I put restrictions on my son when he was very young that no longer apply.
For example, stoning a person to death is painful and cruel, but far less so than the other methods of execution used at the time. I belive that God would have preferred to tell the Hebrews (a semi-civilized batch of nomads at the time) not to execute anyone, but He knew that the people simply would not have listened to that, and trusted that as we became more civilized, we would be able to read the rules he gave us and understand them for what they were.
But, if you want to continue reading them literally, you’d better get rid of those poly-cotton shirts.

Lived, no. Spent a lot of time there? Yes. Bahrain, Kuwait, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates.
In Kuwait there is a really good place for burgers, but I really enjoyed the local food, but if you eat in local places, you have to remember to eat using only your right hand.
Dubai has a good museum and an excellent public library with many books in English. Qatar has a cultural center that has information about Islam for non-muslims. Very interesting.
I like the schwarma (local type of sandwich with a yoghurt based sauce) stands in Lebanon. They usually had a football (soccer) game on a small b&w tv with a bunch of folks shouting at the game.
Essentially, I’ve spent a lot of time in the Middle East, and actually went out among the people and learned something about the culture.

The terrorists go to great lengths to avoid attention. Someone openly praying is not the person we need to worry about. The person we need to worry about is the person that blends in to the crowd so that nobody notices him or her. Someone like Richard Reid, that looks like a scruffy tourist with a British accent.
