The Seattle chapter of Drinking Liberally meets tonight (and every Tuesday), 8PM at the Montlake Ale House, 2307 24th Avenue E.
Come joins us for some hopped up conversation and hoppy beer.
Not in Seattle? Liberals will also be drinking tonight in the Tri-Cities and Vancouver. A full listing of Washington’s eleven Drinking Liberally chapters is available here.

Have you somehow, over the last several days, been trying to say that if global climate change isn’t 100% human caused, that we shouldn’t do what we can to slow the process and do what we can to reverse it?
Let’s say, just for the sake of argument, that those causes under human control only account for half, or even one third of the problem.
Are you seriously saying that we shouldn’t do what we can anyway?
Most climatologists agree that human beings are only one of several primary causes of climate change. No serious researcher in the field says otherwise.
The point made in Mr. Gore’s film isn’t that we are completely to blame, but that our contribution to the problem adds enough to the other causes that it appears that we are moving into new climate territory, that the effects are unpredictable but could easily be dramatic, and that as a result, many people could die.
Could other, as yet unknown factors prevent this? Yes. Do you want to bet the lives of millions on that hope, just so we can keep spewing carbon dioxide into the air?
Fossil fuels will eventually run out. Other technologies will be needed. Whether you consider reducing carbon emissions a side benefit or a primary benefit, encouraging and developing the technologies needed to reduce our dependence on fossil fuels sounds like a pretty good idea.
Why would anyone that doesn’t have a personal stake in the oil industry disagree?

Where Have All the Leaders Gone?
By Lee Iacocca with Catherine Whitney
“Had Enough?
Am I the only guy in this country who’s fed up with what’s happening? Where the hell is our outrage? We should be screaming bloody murder. We’ve got a gang of clueless bozos steering our ship of state right over a cliff, we’ve got corporate gangsters stealing us blind, and we can’t even clean up after a hurricane much less build a hybrid car. But instead of getting mad, everyone sits around and nods their heads when the politicians say, “Stay the course.”
Stay the course? You’ve got to be kidding. This is America, not the damned Titanic. I’ll give you a sound bite: Throw the bums out!
You might think I’m getting senile, that I’ve gone off my rocker, and maybe I have. But someone has to speak up. I hardly recognize this country anymore. The President of the United States is given a free pass to ignore the Constitution, tap our phones, and lead us to war on a pack of lies. Congress responds to record deficits by passing a huge tax cut for the wealthy (thanks, but I don’t need it). The most famous business leaders are not the innovators but the guys in handcuffs.”

@9 “Fossil fuels will eventually run out.”
Yes, but not in our lifetime — and that’s the problem.
Global warming would take care of itself if only we WOULD run out of fossil fuels. But we’ve used only half the world’s petroleum, and it will take another 20 to 30 years to burn the other half. Immense quantities of oil in tar sands and shale — many times the original supply of petroleum — have barely been tapped. And there remains hundreds of years of coal supply.
What we are facing is not ruinously expensive fossil fuel followed by depletion, but something far worse — ruinously expensive fossil fuel accompanied by continued planetary destruction.

John Barelli spews:
Good morning Puddybud
As with many other things, liberals and progressives are not of one mind about nuclear energy. I have no idea of what the other posters here think of it, but I’m always happy to spew my own thoughts.
Many liberals, yours truly included, have a problem with nuclear power because we still don’t have a decent way of dealing with the waste. It has to go somewhere, and nobody wants the stuff in their backyard.
Red states and blue states alike want no part of storing the stuff. Over sixty percent of Nevadans don’t want the storage facility in their state, and almost everywhere else it gets worse.
Additionally, we’re already having to deal with entire nuclear facilities that have reached the end of their useful life, which adds to the cost of generating the power, as the NRC rather wisely insists that money be set aside for decommissioning during the operating life of the plant.
For myself, I see these problems as being surmountable, but others disagree. Regardless, however, they add significant amounts to the cost of generating the electricity, along with adding difficulty in getting both approval and funding for new nuclear power plants, and while many folks agree that nuclear power is a better alternative than coal, there are still better alternatives that have not been fully developed.
Iceland seems to do quite a bit with geothermal energy, and while big chunks of Wyoming and other areas have geothermal potential, we don’t seem to be doing as much as we can with that, although it will probably never be a major factor in power generation.
Tidal power generation has some potential, and at least one of the proposals for the new Narrows bridge included power generation based on that. Unfortunately, Bechtel wasn’t interested. Perhaps after the current bridge is finished, they’ll propose tearing it down and building a tidal generating plant.
Wind and solar have untapped potential as well. Nuclear power will continue to be part of the mix, and will probably become a larger part if we ever sign on to the Kyoto agreement, but it is not entirely “green”.
Some will refuse to consider it because of that, others will reluctantly go along with it because it is better than the alternative.
Certainly the cleanest option available is still conservation. Reducing power demand has the least environmental impact, and many of the things we can do about that are both simple and actually pay for themselves. It cost me very little up front to cut my electric power needs by somewhere in the neighborhood of 100 KWH monthly. Not much, but multiply that by 50 million households, and it adds up to a whole bunch of power plants that we just don’t need to build.
The main changes to my home lifestyle is that I don’t have to change light bulbs as often (the fluorescent bulbs last longer) and my house is colder between midnight and five AM.
Oh, and before you say it. Yes, President Bush has indeed done a very good job with his house in Texas, and while it turns out that the Gore family home also serves as offices for both Al and Tipper Gore, along with much of their staffs (something not often noted when comparing their home energy use to the folks down the street), I’d like to see them do more.
Of course, I’d also like to see their publicist get the word out that their house includes substantial space for staff and offices, so comparing their home to the “average” American home is like comparing a small office building to the average home. Gee, you’d think that since we liberals “control the media”, that would be easy.

Hey John,
Did you know that Iceland was settled by a bunch of Norwegian vikings, who, on their way to Iceland, raided some villages in Ireland to pick up some babes and some guys to be slaves. The Irish and vikings melded into one “race.”
No wonder the Icelanders can drink so much: look at their genetic ancestry!!
John Barelli spews:
Well, Puddybud, the reprocessing does help, but it is not the entire solution. There are still some high level nuclear waste products left to deal with, other than plutonium.
Along with the French, the British have come up with some innovative methods of storing nuclear waste, and I believe that we’ll be using those ideas as well. All of these are steps in the right direction as far as handling and disposal of nuclear waste, but we still don’t have a solution.
Conservation remains our best option. Reduce the demand for power. While some of the ways that are suggested really aren’t practical, some are so simple and cost-effective that it is difficult to understand why they aren’t used more. Heck, I could cut my own power usage even more if I could just get my son to turn the light out when he leaves a room.
Incandescent bulbs in lighting fixtures are an easy replacement that will pay for themselves. Timed thermostats that turn down the heat when nobody is home or awake. Heck, just turn the regular thermostat down to 68 degrees in the winter. It will have the added benefit of reducing “thermal shock” and thereby helping folks stay healthier.
RightEqualsStupid spews:
The terrorists in Iraq have no better friend than George W Bush.
ArtFart spews:
38 Here’s a rare occurrance. (Drum rool please…) Puddy, just this once, on this issue, I agree with you, and I suspect John and I aren’t the only denizens of this blog who do. Further development of nuclear power should certainly be on the table…with a couple of caveats.
One is that the industry needs to be strictly regulated in light of the erosion of business ethics over the last couple of decades. This is one area where “serving the public interest” and doing it with the utmost attention to safety take precedence over the mantra of “delivering maximum value to the shareholders”.
Another is that we’re going to have to bite the bullet and get into fuel reprocessing. This is not just because the accumulation of reactor waste is becoming a major pain in the arse, but because if we don’t we’ll exhaust the planet’s known supply of uranium long before we run out of fossil fuels. The radical faction of the environmental movement has long interfered with any solution to the waste problem because they want the stuff sitting where they can point to it and scream about what a menace it is. Reprocessing can actually help solve the problem of keeping plutonium out of the hands of bad guys. It’s pretty damned difficult to steal something that’s deep inside an operating reactor.

Thanks for pointing out that Don Imus is a liberal Democrat. I always suspected as much, but I never listened to him anyway. I guess the liberal media has fooled most of us into believing that Imus was a conservative. That must be why Imus wasn’t fired for his truly outrageous remark, but merely given a two week suspension. Al Sharpton was actually right about something for a change.
Puddybud Who Left The Reservation spews:
ArtFart this is the third time we agreed. I don’t have the specifics but I do keep count.

53 C’mon, Richard…talk about being a conspiracy theorist! Imus wasn’t fired because the people who employ him want to make more money. In two weeks when he comes back on the air, more people who either never heard of him or have other preferences in entertainment will no doubt tune him in to find out what the fuss is all about.
Imus is an unreconstructed throwback to the 60’s, when “liberation” carried with it a greater degree of licentiousness and opportunism. That was a time when young men were pursuing the “Playboy philsophy” and the (male) leadership of the Weather Underground was using slogans like “F*ck your women until they can’t stand up”.
As recently in the 1980’s, I worked at a company on the Eastside that was really a great place with terrific people, but humor based on racial slurs and sexism was commonplace. Thankfully, now that I find myself working at another place in Bellevue, I’m perfectly happy to discover that has changed over the years.
Over the years, some of us have become somewhat more enlightened. Others have become more hypocritical. Imus apparently hasn’t changed at all. He’s sort of a walking monument to “the good old days” and if nothing else helps us remember they weren’t so good after all.
Puddybud Who Left The Reservation spews:

On Today, Coulter disparaged and misrepresented effort to apologize for slavery
On the February 8 edition of NBC’s Today, syndicated columnist Ann Coulter derided a resolution introduced in the Virginia Legislature apologizing for slavery as “white people engaging in a completely meaningless gesture” and falsely told viewers the resolution “was not introduced by a black person.” In fact, according to a report in the Richmond Times-Dispatch, the original resolution was introduced by Delegate A. Donald McEachin and state Sen. Henry L. Marsh III, both African-American Democrats.

On to important news. Here’s a surprise for everyone. The Army is extending tours in Iraq to 15 months, with 12 months at home between tours. This will allow the “surge” to be maintained for at least a year, and troops deploying today are expecting to be in Iraq until at least July 2008.
As little as we liked the “surge”, the President made that decision and deployed the troops. Now it appears that the “surge” will be extended.
I really think he’s trying to drag this out until after the November 2008 elections. I suppose that he figures that if he can just hold everything together until after the election that the Democrats will have to take the blame for the mess that he’s leaving.

@38 Nuclear power is off the table until Congress repeals the $500 million liability cap.
Why the hell should surrounding property owners bear the risk of an accident when they have no control over plant operations? Why should we allow nuclear plants to be built when the industry has a demonstrated record of incompetence, poor safety, falsifying records, and lying?
Why doesn’t Congress repeal the liability cap and require plant operators to carry $25 billion of liability insurance? It’s a cost of doing business that can (and should) be passed on to utility customers.
The $500 million liability cap shifts the risk of accident to innocent property owners who stand to lose their life savings if something happens. This isn’t fair. It’s a deal-breaker. Until nuclear plant operators are required to accept responsibility for their plant operations, I can’t support any construction of nuclear plants.
That said, nuclear plant design has improved significantly over the last 30 years; and if liability, environmental, safety, and dispoal concerns can be dealt with satisfactorily, then yes we should look at nuclear.
However, it should be understand that nuclear is not a long-term solution, because the supply of nuclear fuel is even more limited than oil supplies. At current usage rates the world has only a 50-year supply of uranium.

If nuclear supporters and the nuclear industry are sincere about building more nuclear plants, they will ask Congress to repeal the $500 million liability cap and pass a law requiring plant operators to carry insurance.
Why is this so hard to do? Every other business and individual in the country has liability insurance. It’s a normal way of conducting business. Why do nuclear operators need liability immunity? Because they’re careless? Their track record certainly indicates a high degree of carelessness (and uncaring) in their operations.

It just happens that undifferentiated stem cells hold great promise, and it is stupid and immoral to deny federal funding for this research. Research into adult stem cell treatments could certainly go on as well.
Are you saying that the fact that adult stem cells can be used in certain treatments is an argument against funding research into using undifferentiated blastocyst stem cells in medical treatment? DO expand on that, please.
Or are you possibly suggesting those who support federal funding for medical blastocyst stem cell research oppose research into treatments based on adult stem cells? Exactly who is suggesting such research funding should not occur? Names would help. Or it this just another straw man?

Congress set up the framework of a compensation plan, but last I heard, out of over 200,000 applicants, the Bush administration had authorized payment in only 1 case. Then I went on about how the same 1957 law limiting liability of nuclear plant operators (because they couldn’t get insurance in 1957, because the industry was too new and the risks too unknown) is still in place; and I added something to the effect that the attitude of plant operators is still stuck in the 1950s, too.
What part of that did you miss, puddinghead? Whatsamatter, didn’t I post enough on that topic for you to get the drift of what my objections to nuclear power are? I don’t believe design was one of them.

“I believe the president. I have always believed him. I believed him when he said he had never been drafted in the Vietnam War and I believed him when he said he had forgotten to mention that he had been drafted in the Vietnam War. I believed him when he said he hadn’t had sex with Gennifer Flowers and I believe him now, when he reportedly says he did.
I believe the president did not rent out the Lincoln Bedroom, did not sell access to himself and the vice president to hundreds of well-heeled special pleaders and did not supervise the largest, most systematic money-laundering operation in campaign finance history, collecting more than $3 million in illegal and improper donations. I believe that Charlie Trie and James Riady were motivated by nothing but patriotism for their adopted country.
I believed Vice President Gore when he said that he had made dunning calls to political contributors “on a few occasions” from his White House office, and I believed him when he said that, actually, “a few” meant 46. I believe in no controlling legal authority.
I believe Bruce Babbitt when he says that the $286,000 contributed to the DNC by Indian tribes opposed to granting a casino license to rival tribes had nothing to do with his denial of the license. I believed the secretary when he said that he had not been instructed in this matter by then-White House deputy chief of staff Harold Ickes. I believed him when he said later that he had told lobbyist and friend Paul Eckstein that Ickes had told him to move on the casino decision, but that he had been lying to Eckstein. I agree with the secretary that it is an outrage that anyone would question his integrity.
I believe in the Clinton Standard of adherence to the nation’s campaign finance and bribery laws, enunciated by the president on March 7, 1997: “I don’t believe you can find any evidence of the fact that I had changed government policy solely because of a contribution.” I note with approval the use of the word “evidence” and also the use of the word “solely.” I believe that it is proper to change government policy to address the concerns of people who have given the president money, as long as nobody can find evidence of this being the sole reason.
I believe the president has lived up to his promise to preside over the most ethical administration in American history. I believe that indicted former agriculture secretary Mike Espy did not accept $35,000 in illegal favors from Tyson Foods and other regulated businesses. I believe that indicted former housing secretary Henry Cisneros did not lie to the FBI and tell others to lie to cover up $250,000 in blackmail payments to his former mistress. I believe that convicted former associate attorney general Webster Hubbell was not involved in the obstruction of justice when the president’s minions arranged for Hubbell to receive $400,000 in sweetheart consulting deals at a time when he was reneging on his promise to cooperate with Kenneth Starr’s Whitewater investigation.
I believe Paula Jones is a cheap tramp who was asking for it. I believe Kathleen Willey is a cheap tramp who was asking for it. I believe Monica Lewinsky is a cheap tramp who was asking for it.
I believe Lewinsky was fantasizing in her 20 hours of taped conversation in which she reportedly detailed her sexual relationship with the president and begged Linda Tripp to join her in lying about the relationship. I believe that any gifts, correspondence, telephone calls and the 37 post-employment White House visits that may have passed between Lewinsky and the president are evidence only of a platonic relationship; such innocent intimate friendships are quite common between middle-aged married men and young single women, and also between presidents of the United States and White House interns.
I see nothing suspicious in the report that the president’s intimate, Vernon Jordan, arranged a $40,000-per-year job for Lewinsky shortly after she signed but before she filed an affidavit saying she had not had sex with the president. Nor do I read anything into the fact that the ambassador to the United Nations, Bill Richardson, visited Lewinsky at the Watergate to offer her a job. I believe the instructions Lewinsky gave Tripp informing her on how to properly perjure herself in the Willey matter simply wrote themselves.
I believe that The Washington Post, the Los Angeles Times, The New York Times, Newsweek, Time, U.S. News & World Report, ABC, CBS, NBC, CNN, PBS and NPR are all part of a vast right-wing conspiracy. Especially NPR.”

Yes, I thought about the tobacco settlement, but realized that it was a unique situation where an entire industry was sued for deliberately and knowingly conspiring to addict its customers.
Compare that to a single power plant incident that contaminates a medium sized city.
We’d find that the power plant was owned by Fred’s Nuclear Power and Storm Door Company, INC and while that company theoretically had a billion or two in assets, that money was actually tied up in the now defunct power plant, and the company was effectively bankrupt.
Rather than thinking “Exxon”, think “Asarco”, and remember that Exxon still hasn’t paid up.
Additionally, many nuclear plants are publicly owned. In fact, while I generally prefer private ownership to public ownership of assets, this may well be an exception.
(Of course, only our state government would name a nuclear power agency “Whoops!”)
I’m not too sure about having a corporate management team, responsible for maximizing stockholder return making decisions about the operation of a nuclear power plant.
But… If the power plant is publicly owned, any liabilities fall back on the taxpayers, presumably the same folks that were damaged.
The think I am most concerned about is that if we don’t license some nuclear plants here to handle the anticipated demand, we’re likely to find electricity generated by nuclear energy becoming a major export for Mexico. Imagine Grupo México owning a string of nuclear power plants along the border.

At what point, Puddybud, do you look inwards and realize that your support of modern day conservatism is destroying America?
I realize you are, at your political core, a single issue voter: abortion. You are vehemently opposed to it on your religious beliefs. I applaud you for fighting so vigorously for what you believe in. But, you have got to come around to the realization that abortion will be irrelevant if our freedoms are removed or altered.
I hope we can return to time when the fiercest political debates are over whether or not a woman has the right to terminate a pregnancy.
Right now, we’re faced with the termination of our freedoms and the potential for a great battle within the United States is upon us. I hope it doesn’t come to that, but we’re on that course because people like you cannot come to grips that the current Republican leaders are breaking the law and their sworn oaths to uphold and defend the Constitution.
If you believe President Clinton was immoral, then surely you see the immorality of George W. Bush. Now the question becomes this and only this: Are you going to chose the side of righteous and morality and denounce what you know to be evil and immoral, or are you going to abandon your own moral virtues and principles and continue to support Bush and the Republicans?

I know you know this, but Pud’s wanting “to know where the outrage is form the left on historical issues” is actually just “changing the subject.”
It’s as if your Mom is yelling at you for taking 10 bucks from her purse and you keep pointing out that she didn’t yell at Dad when he did Q, P, R, or S. You know what? You’re no less guilty of taking 10 bucks from her purse but if you can get her to yell at Dad you’ve won.

Yeah, unfortunately this has become the new tactic of the right on debates. They just keep changing the topic and pointing to “similar” faults of the past by Liberals while divorcing themselves from the truth of the day.
It’s hard for me to understand the mindset that can EASILY see the faults of others from 10, 20, 30, 40, even 50 years ago, but cannot distinguish the evil that is in front of them today.
It can be simply summarized as; Blind Loyalty.
