I have always found it very odd how local Republicans have never given Chris Gregoire much, if any, respect. On the blogs and elsewhere, Republicans still consider her an accidental governor, an aberration, a byproduct of the corrupt machinations in King County. They do not think she is a formidable candidate. They look at her the same way they looked at Patty Murray; someone outside the “leadership” class. But year after year, she rolled up big victories.
I don’t mean respect in the polite way. Frankly, I don’t care if the GOP plays nice. But to treat her candidacy the way Dino Rossi does, the way the GOP loseratti does, well, I don’t think it’s smart. Rossi is downright dismissive; it proves that he believes his own hype about the 2004 election. He’s surrounded by the elder statesmen of the GOP; guys who worked for Slade Gorton, the BIAW, and an assorted array of since-retired legislators. All of them coo into his ear, saying that the governorship was his all along.
I spent only a few hours on the bus, but I paid attention. Unlike Rossi, Gregoire has never had to deliver for a district; she’s good, but not great, at the retail side of things. But there’s a genuine likability there, a genuine warmth. Her economically disadvantaged upbringing has installed in her a mettle, a sense that you have to be strong inside and out to get things done. Rossi may be the salesman, but Gregoire is the sales manager. Rossi is the sizzle, Gregoire is the steak.
The GOP is going to come after her on state spending, specifically, on the 33% increase. (Read more about that below, in Goldy’s post.) While Rossi makes the intellectual argument, Gregoire will talk about what her budget does:
More kids with health care.
More resources for education for our people.
Protecting our environment.
Governor Gregoire doesn’t invest in these things because of how they pencil out on the page. She invests in these things because that’s the kind of person she is. And I think that’s the person Washington voters will re-elect in November.

Gregoire has been a great governor. She broke a 10-year logjam on transportation in six weeks. Time and again, she has pulled the Legislature over impasses and gotten things done. Washington has a very dynamic state government now that is beginning to address the challenges of the 21st century while cleaning up the 20th century’s unfinished business. The governor is positioning us for a bright economic future in international trade and export industries. Recognizing that education is the key to Washington’s economic future, she has expanded the state college system by thousands of new places; has funded the voter-passed initiatives for teacher pay and smaller class sizes; and has gotten the ball rolling on updating the state’s antiquated infrastructure. All of this things are vital to our prosperity and wellbeing. The governor deserves a well-earned re-election. It would be a great thing if the people of Washington expressed their appreciation for her hard work on their behalf by re-electing her with a margin over 60%.

tensor spews:
“The judge should have at least let some republican counties find ballots… you know just to be fair. I know you donks are retards, especially when counting things, but fair is fair.”
The plaintiffs’ suit concerned King County exclusively; they did not mention any of the other 38 counties. (For some reason, they did not wish to discuss, in court and under oath, the performance of counties which have Republicans in charge of counting votes. Go figure.) Therefore, the judge could not discuss most of the state.
Ballots were found all over the state. Yakima County, which had a grand total of 50,000 votes cast in the Governor’s race, found 55 ballots — a very large per-capita find. Better yet, those ballots went disproportionately to Gregoire, in a county where most of the vote went to Rossi!
Judge Bridges did not “find ballots”; he ruled that illegal votes had been cast for Rossi, in precincts where the legitimate voters had heavily favored Gregoire. This flatly contradicted the plaintiffs’ main point, and contributed to their total loss in the suit.
“Did that judge ever figure out where those lost ballots came from in the second recount? You know the couple thousand that were found in King county? That is what turned the election.”
The origin of those ballots was established in hearings before our State Supreme Court. The GOP sued to block counting of those ballots, and citizens had to appear in court to get their legitimate ballots counted. The Supreme Court found that most of the ballots were legitimate, and of good origin, and so allowed counting of them. (This may have been the origin of Rossi’s graceless swipe at them, after he was forced to admit his loss.)
All of this was established, in court, years ago. Do you still believe in the Tooth Fairy?
ByeByeGOP spews:
You’d think the republican judge in the republican county ruling on an election moderated by a republican secretary of state would give every advantage to the republicans and STILL the crying little bitch Rossi got pounded. I still get a smile on my face thinking about that punk’s tears! HE HE!

We do not need a half-wit who believes that arguments pulled out of his greased asshole constitute facts to be our state’s chief executive. I’m not saying there is much there. I’m just saying Rossi was a big step forward for the R’s.
Rossi will lose again. But in 4 years, Rob McKenna will be a very, very strong candidate. And the reason we have McKenna is that Deborah Senn was just party smart to win the nomination from the D’s, and plenty irritating enough to shove a lot of mainstream D’s (such as myself) into voting for McKenna.
And with Sims going down the drain on transit issues, the D’s better come up with a decent candidate, or McKenna will be governor.
Roger Rabbit spews:
@77 Oh, I don’t feel that way about her — she helped elect a lot of Democrats. Not intentionally, but it worked out that way.
Roger Rabbit spews:
@85 Rossi isn’t the moderate he pretends to be, and McKenna isn’t the fabulous attorney general Gregoire was (but then, she’s a hard act to follow), and McKenna will be hurt by the bad reputation and incompetence of his party, but he might have a chance if the Democrats don’t have a strong candidate to oppose him. But why should we think Gregoire will quit after two terms? With both Senate seats occupied by strong Democratic women for the foreseeable future, there’s no other office for her to run for. The only logical move for her is to a Democratic president’s cabinet.
Chris Stefan spews:
@87
McKenna and Reed are about the only Republicans I can think of who would be strong candidates for Governor.
For the Dem bench Pierce County Exec John Ladenburg is an obvious possibility as is Rep. Inslee. Other possiblities would be Reps. Larsen or Smith or State Sen. Murray.
I could also see Sims running in 4 years if his reputation improves enough.
I doubt Gregoire will run for a third term unless she is wildly popular in 4 years. With the exception of Gov. Evans the tradition has been to only serve two terms.
