Howell is a notoriously vicious ad man who learned at the feet of Lee Atwater and Karl Rove. His credits include the notoriously race-baiting ads against Harold Ford Jr. in Tennessee’s 2006 US Senate race, and the infamous campaign against Sen. Max Cleland, who left both legs and an arm on the battlefield in Vietnam, only to see Howell run an ad morphing him into Osama Bin Laden and Saddam Hussein. Howell also produced an ad for Oklahoma Sen. Tom Coburn that accused Democrat Brad Carson of being soft on welfare while showing two black hands counting cash, and ran an ad in Virginia claiming Gov. Tim Kaine wouldn’t have used the death penalty against Hitler.
As Max Blumenthal wrote on Huffington Post back in 2006:
If a political attack ad crosses boundaries of good taste, is emotionally manipulative, excessively ominous, twists facts, exploiting hot-button issues of race, sex and terror, and winds up being condemned by civil rights groups, the chances are that ad has been produced by Republican hitman Scott Howell.
Howell had a banner year in 2004, winning nearly every major race except Rossi’s. In 2006… not so much, the Tennessee race being his biggest victory. That Dino has hired Howell once again speaks volumes about Rossi and the the tone we can expect from his campaign.

A source inside the Rossi campaign tells me that they have not in fact hired Howell: “I don’t want to get too deep into our negotiations, but we decided to go a different direction.”

The central problem she has is that her concept of governacne is administrative rather than leadeership. Whenever I have asked you why you support her, your opistives are always “she negotiated this” or “she helped this happen” rather than “”she led the fight to …” As a result I suspect her main partisans are dyed in the donkey’s wool dems and that is a diminishing pool. What else could Rossi run on? He’s never done anything right in his life. I think the best way to counteract this strategy is to shame them into not running the ads. Yes, I know that shame isn’t in their vocabulary. But if we spend some money in advance, making Rossi’s choice of an adman into a political liability, especially by showing the types of ads he has run in the past in contrast to the honerable nature of his victims, then when he does try to run the ads it will bite him – voters will immediatly spot them for what they are.
The first rule, the very first rule, of Washington politics is this – the person defined as the “nicest” candidate in a matchup usually wins.
Nasty, at least overt nasty, rarely wins races in this state.
But it’s the only card Rossi has left to play. So he’ll play it.
I think he’s hoping for a repeat of when plants intimidated Democratic candidates like Mike Kreidler back in the early to mid 1990s. He’s hoping for mistakes or overreaction by the Governor or her staff.
But I don’t think Rossi realizes just how willing some Dems are to look for something to hit becasue Bush or Cheney aren’t available. I’m not advocating this, but I sure wouldn’t play with this explosive either.
And if it’s shown that Rossi planted troublemakers, well, then it’s over for him a few months early.

Actually, I think the choice of admen is due to the fact that Rossi isn’t really his own man – he is a captive candidate of the local radical neo-cons in this state. These are the people who have an epilectic attack everytime Gregoire’s name is mentioned, and believe that she and Hillary are co-Satanists who just “need to be exposed for what they are”. They are the ones who are probably harping on Rossi to “take off the gloves this time”, and “make sure everyone knows how evil she is”.
But that reveals the real glaring weakness of Rossi as a candidate for governor. He isn’t his own man. He has no broad base of political support other than being a tool to be used against Gregoire. He doesn’t have the gravitas to tell the neo-con’s that he will run his own campaign, thank you. So he will run his campaign the same way he would govern, if given the chance – he will do whatever the neo-cons who put him in office tell him to do. They may even make sure somebody is put close to him to make sure that happens – just like Cheney ended up as V.P. and the real power in the White House.
In other words, if you want this state to be run like Bush & Co. are running the federal government, then feel free to vote for Rossi. Good luck with that campaign theme. ;)

We live here because we like it. I don’t know where you live or how you get treated there but you won’t get treated iin the shabby way you described in the neighborhood stores and shopping centers where I live, unless that particular sales person has their own problem.
