My good friend and former Seattle Weekly colleague, Philip Dawdy, writes one of the best mental health blogs in the country over at Furious Seasons. And today Philip is trying to figure out how he’s going to meet January’s rent — and at the same time file a complaint with the state AG office — after Google Adsense cut him off, and apparently stiffed him on $600 in revenue already earned, over an apparent malware incident Dawdy has no responsibility for. The kicker: Philip can’t even get anyone at Google to tell him what he supposedly did wrong, only an anonymous (and probably automated) response instructing him that
…your AdSense account has posed a significant risk to our AdWords advertisers.
So this is how bloggers are supposed to monetize the Web?

Philip and I used to fight like cats and dogs over TC4 and homelessness politics. But his current effort to shed more light on issues of mental health are worthy of support, and I’ve told him so.
What Google has done is Orwellian in nature and 1984 in Newspeak. In a word, they suck!
Eric Earling over at Sound Politics was on this issue this morning in support of Philip.
Hope enough people make a big enough stink such that someone with a brain at Google looks into this.

Something is definitely fishy with this. If Google cancelled his account because of a particular advertiser’s complaint, they should be up front about it. If it’s because his site was becoming more popular, that’s just not smart business on Google’s part as word tends to get around quick on these internets…

Either way (or if it’s really because someone was trying to simulate extra click-thru’s), Google should pay up what they owe.

Advertiser doesn’t like what someone is saying, so they threaten to pull all their ads from AdSense unless they can the particular blogger’s account.

It’s called “eliminating competition” and it’s what all capitalists do when they’re given a free hand. The last thing a “free enterpriser” wants is a “free market”! Stop and think about it. Competition drives down prices and profit margins. While this is good for consumers, why would any capitalist want that? He wouldn’t! The objective of all free markets is to eliminate free markets! That’s why unregulated capitalism doesn’t work — because it’s self-destroying and turns free markets into monopolies every time. We need to regulate capitalists if we want to keep capitalism.

The Federal Elections Commission web site search gave some interesting info. From 2000-2004 Democrats received a humongous $463.5K. Republicans received a measly $5K.
In 2000, Google Chairman and CEO Eric Schmidt gave $100K to the DNC. Further searching shows $25K to the DNC in 2004.
Laura Debonis gave $25K and David Drummond gave $23K to the DNC in 2004.

@21: My parents being from Memphis, I can tell you a big part of the answer. In Tennessee Gore is seen as being essentially a creature of Washington, not a homie. (He grew up in DC while dad was a senator, went to the best prep schools, etc.) That, along with the usual Dem/Rep divide between the west and east of the state, is why he had a hard time electorally there in 2000.

not sure how this all got spinning away from google and onto stolen elections, but thanks for the interest in what google has done to me. i doubt that i was censored by an advertiser push since many of the ads on my site were for therapists and alternative care not just big pharma. it basically looks as though someone/s used my site to distribute their own click fraud attack on google. now i have to figure out how to prove that to a faceless company. it’s getting a whole lot like kakfa dealing with google.i just want my 600 bucks for earlier clicks and then i’ll move onto another provider.
