The new USA TODAY/Gallup Poll suggests an ass-kicking in the making:
Four weeks before congressional elections, a new USA TODAY/Gallup Poll shows Democrats hold a 23-point lead over GOP candidates. That’s double the lead Republicans had a month before they seized control of Congress in 1994.
President Bush’s approval rating was 37%, down from 44% in a Sept. 15-17 poll. The approval rating for Congress was 24%, down 5 points from last month.
[…]
On the question of which party’s candidate would receive their vote if the election were held today, Democrats held a 23-point lead over Republicans among every type of person questioned

I would guess that today’s Republicans will coninue to assist in their own downfall by becoming even MORE reactionary and lashing out on their preferred issues, for a couple of reasons.
One: It’s how they got to the top. For some time to come, it will be impossible for them to believe that what worked for them so well has become a liability.
Two: They drank the Kool-aid. Many of them are true beleivers who cannot conceive of other valid viewpoints.
Three: They will fracture as a party before they turn en masse to other, more moderate views.
I read recently a long piece somehwhere (maybe Kos?) about the “stabbed-in-the-back” theorizing that the writer believed the GOP about to embark on. So true.
spyder spews:
first a humble request: stop with the Kool-Aid references please; nearly every one who uses the metaphor does so out of terrible ignorance (are you referencing Jonestown or the Merry Prankster days? is a starter question).
I noticed McMorris new attack add on Goldmark calls him the Tax Man. I am certain, that given the similarity to the McMike™y ones, most viewers, both Dem and GOP, will realize that her effort is nothing short of lies and deceipt. This can’t help the GOP at all. It would be one thing if they could present coherent strategies for the many critical issues the citizens of WA face. But to senselessly and idiotically misuse easy-to-look-up factual referents, trying to avoid the scrutiny of their own culpability in creating the mess, they make everybody gag, including their own faithful.

I am very familiar both with the insane tragedy of Jonestown and the habits of the now very-long-gone an lamented Merry Pranksters. The idiom as it is in use most widely now refers to someone who blindly accepts and adheres to a particular philosophy or point of view (derived from the largely unquestioning attitude of those who drank in Jonestown).
Regardless, thank you for your humble perspective, and do not expect me to take you up on your request. Long, elegant, well-written treatises are only one way to communicate. Popular idiom is a convenient shorthand.

Over time, the Democratic party has been more associated with the color blue, and the Republicans with the color red.
But I noticed something funny this weekend. While helping a friend move on Saturday, we travelled from south of Ft. Lewis to north Marysville (almost to Smokey Point). The McGavick road signs were in red until we hit the Tacoma city limits, where they turned to blue. They continued to be blue until we hit Marysville, where they became red again.
On the blue McGavick signs, the “R” designating him as a Republican was apparantly small enough that I couldn’t read it while traveling north in crowded traffic through Seattle. In Marysville, however, I could see the “R” (perhaps the traffic was just slower).

GOP Officials Brace for Loss Of Seven to 30 House Seats
By Jim VandeHei and Chris Cillizza
Washington Post Staff Writers
Tuesday, October 10, 2006; Page A01
Republican campaign officials said yesterday that they expect to lose at least seven House seats and as many as 30 in the Nov. 7 midterm elections, as a result of sustained violence in Iraq and the page scandal involving former GOP representative Mark Foley.
http://www.washingtonpost.com/.....01218.html
JDB spews:
New NYT/CBS poll
Seventy-nine percent of respondents said House Republican leaders were more concerned about their political standing than about the safety of teenage Congressional pages. About half of respondents said that the House Republican leadership had handled the Foley case improperly, compared with 27 percent who said they approved of how it was handled; 46 percent of respondents said Speaker J. Dennis Hastert should step down. And Americans — including women and suburbanites — are more likely to say that Democrats, and not Republicans, share their moral values.
http://www.nytimes.com/2006/10.....r=homepage
JDB spews:
There has been no change since mid-September in the gap between Americans who said they planned to vote for a Democrat over a Republican in their own districts this November: 49 percent to 35 percent. But Democratic voters are more likely than Republicans to say they are enthusiastic about voting this November.
The public’s view of Iraq is as dark as it has been since the war began in 2003: two-thirds said the war was going somewhat or very badly, while only 3 percent said it was going very well. Two-thirds said they disapprove of how Mr. Bush is handling Iraq.
Mr. Bush’s job approval has slipped to 34 percent, one of the lowest levels of his presidency, posing a complication for the White House as it seeks to send him out on the road to rally the Republican base voters. Mr. Bush’s job approval rating has even slipped with his base: 75 percent of conservative Republicans approve of the way he has handled his job, compared with 96 percent in November 2004.
http://www.nytimes.com/2006/10.....r=homepage
JDB spews:
So far, it appears that — at least nationally — Republicans have had little success in pressing what have been their two biggest lines of attacks against Democratic challengers this fall: taxes and terrorism. The poll found that 41 percent of respondents thought Republicans were stronger on handling terrorism, compared with 40 percent who named Democrats, a statistically insignificant difference. Before Labor Day, Republicans had an edge of 42 percent to 34 percent on handling terrorism.
And in a month in which Republicans have sought to discredit Democratic challengers as advocates of big spending and high taxes, 52 percent of respondents said Democrats would make the right decisions on how to spend taxpayers’ money; 29 percent said Republicans would.

It was only after Bush started rattling swords again that the DPRK kicked the international inspectors out and broke the locks on those plutonium fuel rods.
If the DPRK have, indeed, successfully tested a nuclear device, that foreign policy failure lies solely and squarely at George W. Bush’s feet.

Democrats believe that budget deficits are sometimes necessary when an economy needs a boost or to fund long term projects that require borrowing money. It’s just Keynesian economics; otherwise, they believe in paying as you go. Republicans believe that deficits are “their due” and that “bridges to nowhere” are the spoils.

I’ve been waiting for that Clinton lie to show up. Clinton helped the DPRK build light water reactors. Light water reactors aren’t at all useful in creating material for atomic weapons. Clinton also got the DPRK to agree to lock up their plutonium fuel rods, and place them under control of international inspectors.
Commentby Don Joe— 10/10/06@ 6:37 am
Man you are STUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUPIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIID. The Clinton Lie? Do you understand how nuclear weaponry works? do you understand they were doing this behind the scenes.
“In October 2002, according to U.S. officials, North Korea admitted that for several years it had been acquiring the capacity to build a plant for producing highly enriched uranium for nuclear weapons. It is unclear at this time whether North Korea has actually built such a plant and if so, whether it has produced any highly enriched uranium. In November 2002, the United States halted the shipments of heavy fuel that it agreed to provide under the Agreed Framework. On December 12, 2002, North Korea announced its decision to resume operations of the graphite reactors that had been frozen by the Agreed Framework and ordered IAEA monitors to dismantle their inspection equipment and leave the country. North Korea claimed it needed to restart the reactors for producing needed electricity, but the restart had evident implications for North Korea’s nuclear capabilities. At the end of 2002, North Korea unsealed its irradiated fuel storage, removed the cameras, and ejected the IAEA inspectors. Thus, North Korea had put itself in a position to resume a nuclear weapons program without international safeguards by the end of the year, though it might take some weeks for it to actually begin operating the facilities. ”
So by moonbat#85 commentary, they didn’t do a thing but the NK’s own words prove moonbat#85 to be a liar! They have to illegal reactor built and now they take the plutonium rods and use it instead of uranium!

CLARK: I think what the most immediate risk here, Fredricka, is the disintegration of the nonproliferation regime, which has enabled countries to go after peaceful nuclear power but provide something assurance they won’t get nuclear weapons. And when North Korea throws out the National Atomic Energy Agency inspectors, it demeans that authority around the world. That’s an agency which the United States has supported, which helps us meet our goes for a safer, peaceful world, and we need to support that agency, and we need to encourage others to do so.

Do you even know what you’re posting? Perhaps you don’t realize who was president in 2002.
First, Clinton’s 1994 “Agreed Framework” was a godsend that made it uneccessary to bomb the Yongbyon reactor (instead they shut it down), which we were prepared to do. And it got NK back into the NPT and out of the business of reprpocessing fuel rods (which is the fast way to weapons-grade nuclear materials). Also, at the time the consensus intel was that NK’s government would soon collapse due to the death of Kim il-Sung.
But the Republican Congress after 1994 did not provide sufficient funding for the promised fuel oil (that was supposed to make up for the enrgy the lost from shutting down Yongbyon), so that some of the agreed transitional oil supplies were delivered late. Also, North Korea agreed to the freeze primarily because of the U.S. agreement to phase out economic sanctions that had been in place since the Korean War, but because of Republican Congressional opposition, the U.S. refused to deliver on this part of the agreement. So who broke faith on the deal first?
Yes, NK admitted to enriching uranium in 2002 (the slow way to create weapons-grade nuclear materials). But as your own quote notes: “It is unclear at this time whether North Korea has actually built such a plant and if so, whether it has produced any highly enriched uranium.” We didn’t know. I don’t think we know now.
What we do know is that on Bush’s watch, NK has again withdrawn from the NPT, kicked out IAEA insectors, and grabbed their nuclear fuel rods to reprocess into plutonium. They have also test fired a Taepo-dong 2 rocket (unsuccessfully) and demonstrated a nuclear test (unclear on success). Bush’s reaction? He goes to China and says” “Please, please help us with NK.” Weak. Ineffective. Incompetent.
So do YOU support the IAEA? Fat chance, I am thinking.

It reminds me of the exit poll manipulation orchestrated by the Old Media and Democrat operatives in 2004 to create the GOP-deflating perception that John Kerry was winning big. They never learn, do they?
Return with me now to those days of yesteryear, the days when Bill Clinton was in the White House and the Democrats controlled the House and Senate.
The date: October 22, 1994.
The headline in the liberal bible, the New York Times, read as follows: “U.S. and North Korea Sign Pact to End Nuclear Dispute: Many Details are Kept Secret.” Said the story confidently: “Under the broad agreement concluded here late Monday, North Korea will freeze its nuclear activities, [and] renounce any ambition to become a nuclear power…” In addition, the Times trumpeted what the North Koreans would get in return for these two concessions. “In exchange, an international consortium will replace North Korea’s current graphite nuclear reactors, which are considered less dangerous because they produce little weapons grade plutonium.”
Said the North Korean chief negotiator of the deal: It is “a very important milestone document of historic significance” that would resolve his country’s nuclear dispute with the United States “once and for all.” Kang Sok Ju went on some more about this new agreement he had negotiated with the Clinton Administration, and it’s worth reprinting in full. Reports the Times:
He said the agreement, once put into effect, would resolve “all questions of the so-called nuclear weapons development by North Korea” that have raised “such unfounded concerns and suspicions. We have neither the intention nor the plan to develop nuclear weapons,” Mr. Kang said.
And Bill Clinton believed him. The Times reported it this way: “At a news conference in Washington, President Clinton said the treaty ‘was a good deal for the United States.'”
There was one other player in all of this as well. The Times took care to say that “former President Jimmy Carter held talks in Pyongyang with North Korea’s dictator Kim Il Sung, that defused the crisis and led to new negotiations with the United States.” For his part, Carter went on record earlier in the year in meetings with the North Koreans to say that “I personally believe the crisis is over.” What did the North Korean leader (the current dictator’s father, Kim Il Sung) think of Carter’s efforts? “He told me,” said Carter, that “he was very grateful I had gone [to North Korea], and thought it [Carter’s effort to make peace and help give the North Koreans light-water reactors] was a very fine accomplishment.”
The Times concluded that “Bill Clinton will be the biggest winner, a master negotiator on a critical security issue.” Five days later, when the North Koreans expressed skepticism the United States would really give them what they wanted, the Times headlined this story: “Clinton, in Letter, Assures North Koreans on Nuclear Reactors.” Said the President in a letter to Kim Jung Il: “I will use the full powers of my office” to assure that the dictator got what he wanted.
Clinton, the “master negotiator” of “a good deal” did just that. And on October 8, 2006, the world learns that in spite of everything that Clinton, Jimmy Carter, and their respective Democratic national security teams believed, the North Koreans have just exploded their first nuclear weapon.

Iran summons Danish envoy over prophet video
(AFP)
9 October 2006
TEHERAN – Iran on Monday summoned the Danish ambassador to strongly condemn a video lampooning the Prophet Mohammed (PBUH) produced by a far-right Danish party and partially screened on public television, the ISNA news agency reported.
Iran “strongly condemns, denounces and regrets the repeat of insults to the great prophet of Islam and the sanctities of more than one-and-a-half-billion Muslims on the anniversary of the publication of the offensive cartoons,” a foreign ministry statement said.
It was referring to the publication in September 2005 of 12 caricatures of Mohammed by the Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten, which later sparked outrage and weeks of violent protests across the Muslim world.
“The world of Islam expects the Danish government to prevent the occurrence of such insults which hurts the feelings of the world’s Muslims,” it added.
Iran’s President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad also vehemently condemned the video in comments quoted by news agencies late on Sunday.
“The leaders of some nations jail scholars who deny the Holocaust, (but) on the other hand they keep silent towards those who insult the great prophet of Islam on the pretext of freedom,” said Ahmadinejad, who has previously called the Holocaust a “myth”.
“They should know that if the ocean of human nature erupts, its repercussions will be uncontrollable,” he added.
The images were shown on TV2 only fleetingly, with a youth playing the part of Mohammed visible only from the back, as well as a drawing.

Question for you: Why can’t we negotiate a deal?

Since the moonbats love Saddam and islamofascists they should meet the fate of these poor Iraqis:
Prison guards under Saddam Hussein used to bury detainees alive and watch women as they bathed, occasionally shooting over their heads, a former female prisoner testified Monday in the genocide trial of the ex-president.
Speaking in Kurdish through an Arabic interpreter, the 31-year-old witness recalled what she saw as a 13-year-old girl who was detained during Saddam’s offensive against the Kurds in the late 1980s. …
A prison warden she identified as Hajaj – whose name has been given by earlier witnesses in the trial – “used to drag women, their hands and feet shackled, and leave them in a scorching sun for several hours.”
“Soldiers used to watch us bathe,” said the woman. The guards also fired over the women’s heads as they washed.
The woman said several relatives disappeared during the offensive against the Kurds. “I know the fate of my family (members). They were buried alive,” she testified.
The prosecution presented the court with documents showing that remains of the women’s relatives turned up in a mass grave.
