It’s all over the news wires… one of the most intriguing political mysteries of the last half century may have finally been solved:
A former FBI official claims he was “Deep Throat,” the long-anonymous source who leaked secrets about President Nixon’s Watergate coverup to The Washington Post, Vanity Fair reported Tuesday.
W. Mark Felt, 91, who was second-in-command at the FBI in the early 1970s, kept the secret even from his family until 2002, when he confided to a friend that he had been Post reporter Bob Woodward’s source, the magazine said.
“I’m the guy they used to call Deep Throat,” he told lawyer John D. O’Connor, the author of the Vanity Fair article, the magazine said in a news release.
Still waiting for confirmation from Woodward and Bernstein.
UPDATE:
The Washington Post has confirmed that Felt is indeed Deep Throat.
JDB spews:
Berstein has stated that he is sticking by his agreement that he won’t comment until Deepthroat’s death.
Timothy Noah over at Slate has a lot of good articles on Deepthroat, and he has believed it was either Mark Felt or Fred Fielding; looks like he got it right.
Patrick spews:
You heard it from me first!
Goldy spews:
Patrick @2,
Yes I did. But only just barely.
mickh spews:
If this is the guy…what does it matter? (Other than giving Cable TV something more to talk about).
PS: Haven’t seen it reported on FOXNEWS yet…hmmmmm wonder why.
the radish spews:
Reading the Vanity Fair article, it looks like Woodward is going to stick to his agreement not to comment until after “Deep Throat” is dead — sounds like he’s concerned that Felt’s kids are the ones pushing him to come out now, and Woodward isn’t comfortable that Felt is competent to make that kind of decision.
And I have to say I don’t think much of how Felt’s kids come across in this — the argument they finally persuade their father with is getting money for the grandkids. Ick.
righton spews:
Too bad we don’t have journalists seeking a good inside source and story on the Governor’s race. Oh yeah, we have some guy working out of his house who is doing this sort of. But we need a “deep throat” to give us more of the truth.
Nicole way?
windie spews:
’cause naturally the election troubles are morally and legally equivalent to watergate, right?
Itsasquak spews:
Lesssee … in one case, people broke into the other parties election headquarters to find out what they were up to so that thier party could combat it more effectively and win the election.
In the other case, people did not care about the actual election, they just fabricated votes until thier candidate won and hid behind bureaucratic stupidity as a defense for not righting the wrong perpetuated on society. Yeah, you are right windie, they are not equivalent. Watergate was not as important.
Patrick spews:

If Mark Felt is indeed “Deep Throat” this country owes him far more than can ever be paid in mere money or gratitude. He deserves a statue in Lafayette Park.

I’m calling “bullshit” on that one, you fucking liar.
windie spews:

you, sir, are insane. If watergate were just a breakin, and more importantly if there were any actual evidence that wasn’t from your fevered imagination, then maybe you’d be right.
I’m still going with insane.
Nindid spews:
Itsasquak@ 9 Republicans have seemingly devolved into propaganda machines without any connection to reality. Bush himself defined propaganda as repeating something until people believed it to be true.
But in the reality based world, there is no evidence of fraud. Let me state this in a way that the trolls can understand. There is no evidece of fraud. There is no evidece of fraud. There is no evidece of fraud. There is no evidece of fraud.
Patrick spews:
“Bush himself defined propaganda as repeating something until people believed it to be true.”
Are you sure that wasn’t Goebbels?
pbj spews:
Nindid@12,
There may be no “evidece” of fraud, but there sure is evidence of fraud. Dead people voting, felons and illegal aliens too. Throw in Nicole Way falsifying the certification report and you got fraud.
The only propaganda is the Democrat media machine in this town repeating the lie that there is no fraud.
pbj spews:
Well at least one thing is clear. With his rather high pitched voice, we know Goldy wasn’t “Deep Throat”.
Dr. Quest spews:
blackboxvoting.org gives the whole story on how Reps. stole the 2004 election. Reps in WA are pissed because they tried the same thing but you’re too inept to pull it off. Reps in WA are double losers—almost triple losers.
Itsasquak spews:
I love it … a bunch of dipshit neophites that probably were not even born when watergate happened and only know what they were told by thier liberal teachers in high school about it trying to tell me that republicans are a propaganda machine and that watergate was really really bad but what happened here was ok.
I flip your bullshit back in your face snot nose. Watergate was a break-in that was politically motivated and the fallout was because it was dirty politics. What happened here was a conspiracy to steal an election outright as your buddy “Nixon” Handy has basically admitted to this day. Oh, sorry, suppose you did not get the memo … but he sent emails telling KC how to pull the wool over the public and the judge in the court case.
windie spews:
So Itsasquak, you going to tell us ‘young’uns’ how Mccarthyism is a shuck too, and it was all a plot to discredit a good man by the evil liberals, and the Army trial never happened?
Dr. Quest spews:
It’s the 1% of the population that owns 1/3 of all the wealth in this country that are the mutual enemy of the other 99%. Until the 99% understand this they will always be at each others’ throats. Did you hear the one about Boeing and Airbus suing each other because they each claim that the other CO>. is the unfair recipient of too much Corporate Welfare from their client states? Doesn’t that sink in ? Are all right wingers complete idiots?
Itsasquak spews:
Nice windie … you cant dispute that the dems own witness just let the cat out of the bag, so in typical liberal fashion, you try to change the arguement. Sorry, not biting this time … too busy helping Dino pack for the governors office.
Jon spews:
Woodward just confirmed Deep Throat’s identity as Felt…I had thought it was Al “I am in control” Haig…called that one wrong.

There was no “conspiracy to steal an election,” jackass! BTW dumb shit, Watergate was a felony, not “dirty politics.” There was also a burglary of Daniel Ellsburg’s psychiatrist’s office, maybe you overlooked that because you were too young and snot-nosed to remember. Watergate may have been a third-rate burglary, but Nixon committed first-degree perjury and obstruction of justice, and the Ellsburg burglary was a major invasion of an individual’s privacy and constitutional rights. This was the GOVERNMENT

No need to rush — you’ve got forever. The only way Rossi will ever see the governor’s office is as a tourist.

“The only way Rossi will ever see the governor’s office is as a tourist.”
Nope I heard he applied for the janitor’s job there – he’s so desperate to get in. But breaking news is they denied him a job because he lied on his application. Seems he still has trouble telling the truth about the fact that he’s a real estate agent, not a broker !!!
windie spews:
@27
‘s all good, if not my point.
Denying watergate is like denying mccarthy. THey’re both insane revisionism that certain right wing pundits like to spew out whenever they can.
—>Whether or not some of them were actually guilty doesn’t excuse the mans excesses.
spyder spews:
It is one thing to commit felonies when the dirty tricks weren’t working as well as they had been, and there were many such tactics used by the CREEP to facilitate the elimination of “enemies.” Mulitple felonies were just the extension of the agenda.
I think the issue was not who Deep Throat was, as much as who might it have been, and now to know who it wasn’t. It is a sad commentary on the US that there is a direct connection between various members of the Eisenhower/Nixon regimes and the current Bush Administration. Many of those connecting links are not exactly of the sort one would consider as positive, as they represent the never ending power of the military/intelligence apparatus and industries.
David spews:
No, no, this is all a whitewash, a smokescreen. Deep Throat was actually Betsy Jobs and Arlene Lorenzo.
pbj spews:
@29,
McCarthy may have been crazy, but ignoring the fact that there were communist spies steealing our mos tsensitive secrets is reckless at best.
The VENONA files are most famous for exposing Julius (code named LIBERAL) and Ethel Rosenberg and help give indisputable evidence of their involvement with the Soviet spy ring.
pbj spews:
The first of six public releases of translated VENONA messages was made in July 1995 and included 49 messages about the Soviet’s efforts to gain information on the U.S. atomic bomb research and the Manhattan Project. Over the course of five more releases, all of the approximately 3,000 VENONA translations were made public.
windie spews:
Funny, the rosenburg trial had nothing to do with McCarthy (for one thing, it was an actual trial, not a senate-based dog ‘n pony show). Anwyays, I’m sure that you’re using the fact that a few people were guilty to dodge the fact that so many people were innocently attacked is just another smokescreen.
Whether you’re saying that Watergate was just a few dirty tricks and not as bad as the WA election “fraud” in 2004, or saying that because 2 people were spies everyone was, doesnt’ matter. Its the same insane right-wing ‘none of our people have ever been as wrong as the left’ gibbering.
Patrick spews:
It’s part of the wingo effort to smear all liberals as “traitors” and “enemies” by trying to (falsely) associate them with real traitors and enemies.

No problems in the Governors race… hmmm more votes that voters casting them isnt a problem? Please explain that to me. And do not say it isnt part of the process of crediting voters, because it is. You lying, cheating, stealing, pinko, soft ass, sissy, socialist bastards…
pbj spews:
Actually the Rosenberg trial and prject Venona proved that indeed there were spies stealing our most sensitive secrets – contrary to popular liberal myth that there were no Soviet Spies and that it was all made up. Once again, when the liberals ran national security, the Soviets were able to get our nuclear secrets like a kid in a candy store.
No, the liberals are all the enemy or traitors, but some are just so damn dumb that they cannot guard national secrets.
Patrick spews:
Pbj doesn’t think felons can be trusted to tell the truth about who they voted for, yet he takes the word of Soviet spies at face value.

David, I agree Foreman can’t prove the legal definition of fraud, but where did those extra votes come from? I guess dead people voting, felons voting, double voting, and illegal aliens voting doesn’t count for much? The mighty look at the eastern counties proved the problems occurred in democrapic Spokane areas and around WA State University and Yakima city? I guess the lack of an official reconciliation doesn’t count for much? I guess Jenny Durkan asking the other county auditors if they had problems and then them saying they did reconcile before issuing the official certification documents, makes KCEC look bad. Would you admit that?

Maybe you are feeling the heat?

Kennedy was wrong on “Bay of Pigs” and, unlike the chimp…admitted it.
Kennedy was ready to disengage from Viet Nam, and would have if he hadn’t been killed.
LBJ was was ruined by that failed adventure in Southeast Asia and for all the great things he accomplished domesticly (which I was too callow to appreciate at the time), died a broken man haunted by the mess we had gotten into (thanks again Bob McNamara and the baby neo-cons).
I believe that these bootlick corporate shills and hacks that have taken over our Republic are evil intentioned, unpatriotic, cowardly, greedy bastards.
pbj spews:
Mark Felt used confidential law enforcement data, the product of an ongoing criminal investigation, to get Richard Nixon out of office. Ever since he rose to national prominence fighting hidden domestic Communists like Alger Hiss, Richard Nixon was anathema to the liberals. Getting Nixon out of office was such a priority that maybe all sins can be forgiven. But there is the little matter of precedent.
Felt is being hailed by liberals as a Hero of Our Time because he actually drove Nixon from office with his abuse of his high position in law enforcement. Can you imagine the reactions these same folk would have had if someone in law enforcement or the Secret Service had leaked information about Bill Clinton during the period when he was being impeached and tried?

Sure there were (a few) spies.
But what mccarthy did was like shooting a shotgun into a crowded room. Sure maybe he hit some spies (he didn’t the Rosenbergs had nothing to do with McCarthy) but its not worth the number of innocent people that take buckshot.
You (pbj) are saying, ‘well he got a few spies, so was ok to fire!’
Donnageddon spews:
Let me make it even simpler for pbj.
pbj, you are accused of being a NAZI. Someone named you as a NAZI. Now the congressional anti-NAZI court tells you to name names or go to jail. You can’t name names, because you don’t know any NAZIs. The court prepares to throw you in jail, so you quickly name some people. You do not go to jail, but are still blacklisted as a NAZI.
The innocent people you named now have to go to court and face the same dilemma.
Your life is ruined, and so are the innocent people you named.
Thousands of lives are ruined this way.
At the end of it all two real NAZIs are caught.
50 years later some asshole proclaims that it was worth it to ruin those thousands of lives because they caught two NAZIs.
You, pbj, are that asshole.
Patrick spews:
Pat Buchanan is living up to his reputation as America’s most rabid right winger hater (and bullshitter). He blames the U.S. defeat in Vietnam on Deep Throat, and claims D.T. is responsible for the vain sacrifice of 58,000 men.
Bullshit.
The U.S. lost the Vietnam War because of political meddling in the military conduct of the war, stupid military tactics, and incompetent leadership by the generals.
You don’t have to be a West Point graduate to see what’s wrong with sending infantry to find the enemy by walking around in the jungle until they get shot at.
This lets the enemy choose the time and place of battle, gives him the high ground and best cover, gives him time to dig in and fortify his positions, gives him the element of surprise, allows him to ambush approaching troops, and lets him disengage and withdraw if the battle doesn’t go his way.
What a fucked up way to fight a war.
And Buchanan thinks that was Felt’s fault? Duane (@ 54) you have your head as far up your ass as Buchanan’s is up his.

Nixon is anathema to liberals because he was a criminal, idiot! He used the FBI and IRS to harass political opponents. He and the people who worked for him committed so many felonies that over two dozen of his underlings went to PRISON. Nixon himself would have faced multiple felony counts and a probable prison term if Ford hadn’t (wrongly) pre-empted the legal process by misusuing the pardon power to enable the president who nearly brought down our Constitutional democracy to escape justice for his crimes.
The fact you DEFEND these criminals and attack the brave people who stood up to them and brought them to justice says worlds about your own lack of character and bad judgment. You are one sorry-ass excuse for an American. You, sir, are no patriot, you are an unpatriotic piece of dung.

ThatPrick thinks the US Military is not trustworthy and he trusts Al Qaeda more than the US Military. I guess no one told him (or he didn’t pay attention) that Amnesty International is a Democrat special interest group.
The top leadership of Amnesty International USA, which unleashed a blistering attack last week on the Bush administration’s handling of war detainees, contributed the maximum $2,000 to Sen. John Kerry’s presidential campaign.
Federal Election Commission records show that William F. Schulz, executive director of Amnesty USA, contributed $2,000 to Mr. Kerry’s campaign last year. Mr. Schulz also has contributed $1,000 to the 2006 campaign of Sen. Edward M. Kennedy, Massachusetts Democrat.
Also, Joe W. “Chip” Pitts III, board chairman of Amnesty International USA, gave the maximum $2,000 allowed by federal law to John Kerry for President. Mr. Pitts is a lawyer and entrepreneur who advises the American Civil Liberties Union.
