I want to thank you both for participating in Chris Murphy’s filibuster. It’s far past time that the country took up reasonable gun reforms. I don’t know what could get passed through this Congress even in the wake of yet another horror. But thank you for trying.

I’ve also sworn off fake “laughing” in all-caps print and onomatopoeia explosions – like this.
The laughing in print thing is just stupid, really. Think about it. Laughter if it is at all real is, by definition and it’s very nature, a spontaneous and unwilling expression. Precisely the opposite of angrily banging away on a computer keyboard repeatedly. And if someone working away at a computer keyboard were to have their head explode, the result in print would be nothing at all like those onomatopoeia words like “kapow”, or “kaboom”, or “kablammo”. A more honest depiction in print would be something more disjointed and nonsensical marked by misspellings, fractured syntax, and tourettes-like randome utterance as the speech and language parts of the brain disintegrated. Something more like this.

I have absolutely no confidence that Republicans will come to their senses on guns this year. Even if a Senate vote succeeds, the House under the control of el Douche’s hand puppet Ryan will close the door.
So this comes down to a political calculation. Some might call that cynical. But really, cynical is a Republican party that simply does whatever Wayne Lapierre and the gun manufacturers tell them to do. So maybe making a political calculation is the best that can come out of this. Flipping one or two Senate seats is not even close to the value of the lives that will undoubtedly be lost in the next mass shootings. But when one of the two political parties has abandoned public service in favor of grift, what other choice is there?

“And no further mass killings will happen afterward. And unicorns…..”
Not sure that is the point, that no further mass killings will happen afterward. I think the point is to limit the number, even if by one, or to impede the progress that we are making with the lovely and lively killings that we are experiencing.
Aside from the constitutional right being infringed, what is so extreme about trying to keep weapons of mass destruction out of the hands of criminals. Even GWB sacrificed a few thousands of lives trying to do that.
Also, I hear that police departments are created and exist for the purpose to deter crime (not prevent). It would be like arguing that we should save our “so precious” (think of silence of the lambs movie when the killer calls for his dog) dollars and abolish police departments across the Country because we still have rapes, robbery and murders. Hey you know they really don’t go after the Wall Street criminals after all too.
Or maybe just the opposite, since more guns would help resolve this problem, as some have suggested, then we should more heavily arm the police departments than currently heavily armed – it would be the only logically answer to have “no further crime”.
Right?

@44 I support individual liberty. Not something the NAZI’s celebrated as they are and were a socialist movement. A movement of the mass controlled by the government. Once can argue the NAZI’s are on the left or the right. I say this because there is the fuzziness of where ones personal liberty begins and ends. Is it enough to say mine ends at my nose and the beginning of yours? If one is a doctor does ones liberty include the right to refuse to treat someone else for any reason or does a physicians oath enter into the question and how?
You are in New York city there are a lot of weird people there not all of them many cheer for the Yankees, some for the Mets and a few for the Dodgers. Mark Adams spews:
@43
You are twisting the issue a bit here. The issue is saying there is a difference between the weapons that are civilian and those that are for our war fighters. You are trying to confuse that with the phrase weapon of mass destruction. That would be something like the use of phospene gas during WWI or the first use of chlorine gas. Yet phospene is used in many industrial processes and is readily available. It’s not unusual that emergency crews are called to the scene where someone is injured or dead from mixing cleaners. Just not the in thing among terroists.
So can individuals own ballista, trebuchets, cannons, gatling guns, 88 guns, ect. All of these weapons are arguable weapons of war. Americans often rich or well connected own them. Some own WWII and cold war warplanes. While they don’t normally carry arnaments it’s easy to add them, and often the owner of the plane has a few items in the back room. It’s the classic turning the sword into plough shares, one can always go the other way.
Look at the battle of Little Big Horn Custer declined to take the two gatling guns with him, turned out many of his opponets had repeating rifles. Seems both sides weapons one could argue were weapons of war.
What is the difference as the muskets used in the Revolution were weapons of war. Tipped with a bayonet. A skilled attacker can do a lot of mahem with one. Though one may want to have a couple of axes available. If one is a dedicated warrior and don’t mind getting your hands dirty you can do a lot of damage in a crowded dance club with a couple of those.
One has to keep in mind point of view. If he’s a teroist he is someones fighter, and those folks thing he should be getting medals just like our folks get in the military for single handedly taking out a platoon of enemy soldiers. We think his act is criminal and arguable cowardly as he could have tried this at any number of military bases in the area or gone out to the Cape and attacked NASA, arguable a legitimate target if his goal is to get the US to withdraw from the fight against ISIS ect.
Yep it’s no accident that Cuba’s new leaders aaked Che to go be a revolutionary elsewhere. Or that when Mao did his cultural revolution he turned to young men. Or who were involved in creating the killing fields of Cambodia.
Oh and had the man just decided to don an explosive vest and had gone into that club just how devastating do you think the result would have been? Which is the poor Palistinian’s M-16 or AR-15. After all the Hezbollah saves the AK-47’s for the old guys and let the impressionable young men go to Allah.

@47 So how about those US Catholics who support their churches doctrine perhaps more than US law even have a couple of those on the Supreme Court.
Folks in your own church of course support US policies that are close to your beliefs, and go a bit apoplectic when they don’t.
Who knows maybe 51% of your faith support Sharia law. If not that your faiths version. Most Americans support of Church and State fluctuates and depends on their faith and what their beliefs are. You got your northern Baptists and your southern Baptists seems they had some disagreement or something about slavery. Each group must have had at least 51% of its members supporting their view. Which may or may not have been the view of the US government. Was the establishment of the Confederacy kind of a creation of Sharia law here in these United States? Or was it about a Mississippi squirrel?

Something the GRU or FSB would do, and the CIA if they think they can get away with it. OF course the FBI would never stoop so low. Nor any American Law enforcement personnel. Or would they?
Distant Replay spews:
@43,
you’re on the right track essentially.
It’s false logic to assert that if any proposed firearms safety regulation fails to be completely protective then it has no merit. And the Supreme Court has ample precedent to support limitations, even of an “individual” right that are specifically directed to public safety having to do with either excluding certain specific citizens or certain specific features of firearms. It’s almost certain that universal background checks will not prevent all mass shootings. But reasonable requirements that do not unduly burden those engaging in the commercial transfer of firearms for fun/profit directed toward public safety, like universal background, can help keep firearms out of the hands of people who, for sound public safety reasons, should not have them.
Don’t ever give in to bullshit logical fallacies.. The GunsAreCool reddit features a very useful primer on the most common logical fallacies employed by gun humpers. You can find it here:

Mark Adams spews:
@56 You are making a false assumption. I’m not a libertarian though I agree with giving people maximum liberty. It’s a liberal idea.
As to what you are harping about just perhaps I’m being successfully sarcastic.
I do find it absurd that liberals would fall back to passing legislation to use legislation that is of questionable constitutionality. The act maybe entirely unconstitutional. It’s a basic right that one may travel. No matter how well meaning the no fly list is blatantly unconstitutional. If you don’t want a terroist to travel then the government needs to arrest, try and convict them.
Under the second amendment the weapon used is exactly what a member of a militia should have. Under British common law the right to own arms already existed and if the Virginia constitutional amendment had been adopted in fullthe first line would have been a clear statement of the common law.
Mark Adams spews:
@51 Justice Black and other justices would disagree with you. Of course whether guaranteed right are limited or unlimited is a basic political and legal issue.
Why is the number of representatives in house of representatives frozen. It should increase with population. Or can a representative serve a million constituents in which case the house needs to drop at least 100 representatives. Of course if you think a representative can effectively represent 500,000 people then there should be at least 600 members. I don’t believe an individual can effectively represent more than 100,000 people so the house should be 3,000 plus members. My wouldn’t that impact politics. Make oligarchy more unlikely and difficult or at least pricier.
Mark Adams spews:
@55 Perhaps reading and applying the actual test of the 2nd amendment would change a lot of attitudes. This would mean all able bodied men (sorry ladies you don’t fall under the draft) who are Washington state citizens. Shall be issued or expected to purchase arms to be members of the militia. All members shall come for drill twice a year. There will be no national guard as the militia will fulfill that function, and fall out for emergencies. Each member will have M-16 or M-4. I do think the 2nd amendment is open to this interpretation. The right to individuals to own guns would have to fall back to common law.
PS This is actually what the Swiss do though they do allow individuals to store weapons at a local armory or at home. Each Swiss man has a rifle, pistol and ammunition issued. Yet no mass killings and the Swiss Guards guard the pope. Could this really be more of a societal thing, because we aren’t Swiss not even in Leavenworth, WA.
Teabaggers Again spews:
Mr. Adams you still haven’t rebutted my comment to your comment “no further mass killings will happen afterward. And unicorns shit gold”.
Was that sarcasm? It doesn’t appear to be. Sounds like you are throwing out a red hearing by saying that that’s what people are wrongly trying to achieve. No one is suggesting that by banning AR’s that all mass killings will stop. Why are you trying to say that?
Mark Adams spews:
@63 What I’m saying is that the actions and proposals are feel good measures. The are knee jerk reactions to an event or events. The proposed legislation which will most likely die in the House is wasted political capital that even if passed frankly won’t survive a court challenge. It’s very likely the 2nd Ammendment allows individuals to own fully automatic weapons or any weapon an individual would use if they were a member of a militia. Memebers of a militia use weapons of war, The weapons used in the Revolutionary War were weapons of war, and the long guns from Kentucky were at the pinnacle of military weaponry at the time.
There are a few clubs in Orlando that an AR 15 or two are kept in the back. Guess Pulse wasn’t one of those. So the guy picked well. I’m not sure if it was because it was because it was a gay club or because it was Latin Night and perhaps he knew a lot of folks there would be Puerto Rican. Perhaps he left a rant or two out there explaining his choice.
Still he was effective. The young man may have been equally, more or less effective if his choice of weapons had been something other than AR 15.
Aren’t these politicians proposing bills in the hope that they will stop mass murders. That has to be the goal. That may mean talking about causes, about young men, young women, being in other nations and bombin them, of a decade and a half of war and how it has changed our society as war always does. Do you think Jessee James and his gang would have been what it was without the Civil War?
It does mean putting the 2nd amendment on the table and taking way guns or even knives. Rather than a solution that any economist would say is a total fallacy as people wanting to do these crimes will simply change weapons, or use ARS because they are illegal and allegedly frieghtening.
I think if you go down to 42nd Street and play with yourself it will have an equal possibility of stopping he next mass murderer. Perhaps he or she will see your magnificent cock and be enthralled by you, and you will stop the next mass murder. Perhaps others on here would like to try this solution out. You will at least feel good, though not so good it overcomes the arrest record, but at lest one of you suggest anything that can be done to stop a mass murder should be done.
Mark Adams spews:
@63 PS And why didn’t he choose Disney as location of his attack. Because Disney has a security force that has weapons including AR-15’s. So is it ok that a corporation hold AR-15’s? Or other weapons? Have their own security force? And this guy worked at some time for a security company. So do cops get to have AR-15’s or M-16s as they are todays militia?
