Speaking of editorial endorsements, the Seattle Times endorsed Pete Holmes today in the Seattle City Attorney race, marring my near perfect record on predicting their editorial endorsements over the past few cycles.
Well, sorta marring my record. In contrast to my other unwavering predictions, here’s what I wrote last week:
As for City Attorney, I’m guessing some on the board are tempted to go with Holmes, if only to show they’re willingness to toss out an incumbent (there’s that predictable unpredictability) but I’m betting they stick with Carr.
So I successfully predicted that this was the race in which they might go for the more liberal, less establishment candidate, but I failed to predict the ultimate outcome of their internal debate. A qualified miss on my part, but a miss nonetheless. Damn it.

just say you got it wrong. don’t be all qualifying all over the place.
Roger Rabbit spews:
@1 Goldy didn’t get it wrong. He did predict they might endorse Holmes to “show their willingness to toss out an incumbent.”
(Translation: So they’ve got cover to keep endorsing an ineffective and useless GOP congressman.)
As usual, Goldy was spot-on. No one is better plugged into local politics than Goldy! In fact, campaign managers have quit buying polls; now, they just read HA to find out where their candidate stands with the voters. Hell, even the Seattle Times editorial board reads HA to find out what they’re going to do.
YellowPup spews:
Who knows, maybe your prediction tipped the scale and they decided to mess you up.
There, how’s that for a liberal conspiracy?

I’m going to guess that the Times will tomorrow endorse, for School Board, Kay Smith-Blum (District 5) and Wilson Chin (District 7). Not really a guess but if you follow the Times (as Goldy does), you know they love business. Now Wilson Chin is a research scientist (and bright guy) but Kay is a co-owner of Butch Blum. That doesn’t make her bad or wrong but it makes her someone that the Times or the Mayor (current) can breath a sigh of relief over. Heck, she says she already has developers lined up to build a new K-8 downtown for downtown residents (there is no elementary downtown). Hands please if you think this is the most pressing thing to get done in public education in Seattle Public Schools? Didn’t think so. She’s bright and energetic but I wish the district would hire her as czar of public/private partnerships. She’d be a bit of a loose cannon on the Board unless she could rein in that energy and all her plans.
My call is for Andre Helmstetter (District 5) and not the incumbent, Mary Bass (who should be honored for her service but she’s had 8 years). I support Charlie Mas in District 7 who knows this district inside out and would be a great watchdog to the district. Wilson Chin would be a good second choice.

1. “I’m betting they stick with Carr.”
2. They didn’t.
3. He was wrong.
