Republican Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers, WA-05, has condemned the crazy disruptors:
“I certainly don’t condone violence, I don’t condone calling President Obama Hitler and painting swastikas on signs at town halls,” continued McMorris Rodgers, vice chairwoman of the GOP conference.
McMorris Rodgers is the first member of the House Republican leadership to decry the Nazi comparisons. It follows a week of attacks by the House Democrats’ campaign arm on House Republican leaders, who Democrats say should speak out against Rush Limbaugh’s remarks comparing Democrats to Nazis in the healthcare debate.
As Think Progress noted, she didn’t mention Limbaugh by name, so it’s not clear whether the big fat idiot will require an apology.
So good on McMorris Rodgers anyhow.
Where were you lefties when all the Bush/Republicans = Hitler/Nazis comparisons were being made? Where were your condemnations when the anti-war fucknuts were interrupting hearings and meetings?

Palast Blasts Obama’s Health Reform
Progressive muckraker Greg Palast, the guy who exposed the GOP’s illegal voter “caging” schemes in Florida and Ohio that enabled Bush to steal the 2004 election, doesn’t like the deals Obama has cut with Big Pharma and other health care special interests. Obama, he says, is a sellout.

— Research is only 5% to 8% of a typical drug company’s budget.
— Over half of the drug industry’s total revenues are spent on marketing.

And then the obama goes and has secret meetings.
Maybe he will have a press conference in the oval office. He’ll sit in his big chair, wag his finger at you and say, I did not have secret meetings with those drug companies.

@5 There is the rather disgusting possibility that having started out talking up single-payer, Obama and the other progressives will end up being maneuvered into so many compromises in order to be able to say they “passed something” that all we’re going to end up with is a major portion of Medicare handed over to the private insurers.
McMorris-Rodgers may be just a smidge smarter than her GOP colleagues. Republican favorables are cratering.

I don’t know. Those same drug companies are right now plunking down $150 million for ads favorable to health insurance reform. If we cut a deal with them so that they run ads on the side of reform and DON’T run ads on the other side, maybe that’s a deal that makes some amount of sense.
@6 It’s actually a little more complicated than that. Much of basic research is indeed government-funded, but increasingly over the last couple decades a lot of the heavy lifting of new-drug development has been done at “biotech” startups. Once one comes up with something that looks like it’s going to fly, the startup peddles itself to one of the majors, and a few of the founders walk away with very full pockets. Even Eli Lilly’s much-heralded introduction of Humulin came from the purchase of a smaller company that had done all the development and clinical testing, and had a large-scale production plant all ready to go. Lilly’s main contribution was a huge marketing campaign and a distribution network.
@14 If we’re lucky, what may happen is that we’ll finally get medical insurance divorced from employment, but run by private insurers with a little more regulation and a lot of taxpayer subsidies.

Hold on there. The provisions of the various bills on the table will do quite a bit of reguilation of insurance companies. Taking pre-existing conditions off the table alone wiill be a huge win.
And if we DO subsidize some amount of insurance coverage, and cover 97% of Americans along the way, it will be doing more good things with subsidy money than the oil-depletion allowance and agricultural subsidies combined.
9, 10 — Whatever Obama’s failings are, the GOP’s are worse. He may be putty in lobbyists’ hands, but Republicans are their tools.
I hope you righties realize the precedent that’s been set vis a vis presidential emergency powers. This health crisis is approaching the proportions of a national emergency — the kind of emergency where a president could simply dictate the way it will be with health reform before more lives and treasure are lost.
And as for those purveyors of lies (you all know who you are), you are demonstrably traitorous to yourselves and your fellow citizens and you should be rounded up and put in the detention camps we’ve been secretly building.
