GOPolitburo Chair Chris Vance issued a typically defiant press release today.
(Sound of crickets chirping.)
The Republicans, whose aggressive PR campaign so successfully pushed the news cycle for months, now appear on the defensive… and while Vance’s recent statements have been characteristically dishonest, this one is particularly lame. I was talking to Andrew over at Pacific NW Portal, and he suggested we really need to roast Vance for this press release after Dino Rossi loses his case. But my acute sense of chivalry compels me to make fun of him now… particularly for this amusingly bold proclamation:
“With 13 days left until the trial, we are more confident then [sic] ever that we will win this case,” Vance concluded.
Which leads me to conclude that either they were never really all that confident to begin with, and/or that Vance and his attorneys are really, really stupid. Or perhaps that Vance is (gasp) lying. This quote is kind of like saying that “we are more confident than ever that we’ll find WMDs in Iraq,” or that “Crisco is part of a heart-healthy diet.” It’s time to move on Chris… if you don’t admit the lie, we’ll only spank you harder.
But if you really are more confident than ever, prove it… I want to hear these words coming out of Rossi’s mouth.
UPDATE:
Vance’s press release was in response to former Gov. Gary Locke’s public appeal to Dino Rossi to drop his lawsuit. So of course our good friend Stefan over at (u)SP picks up Vance’s “Desperate Democrats” theme, and questions Locke’s timing.
The timing is interesting. The trial is set to start in less than two weeks. At this point, Rossi is obviously not going to concede, especially when the call comes from a prominent Democrat. By making such an appeal, Gary Locke makes himself look more than a little bit foolish. If the case for Rossi is as hopeless as the Democrat lawyers (speaking through their official spokesman) want you to believe, why would Gary Locke bother to make a fool of himself with such a lame appeal? Why wouldn’t he just wait quietly and bide his time knowing that the Republican case will self-destruct in court anyway? The only reason I can imagine that Locke would speak out now and risk looking like a dope, is if he were convinced that the Democrat case was in serious trouble and he wanted to rally his own party faithful.
First, I’d just like to point out how amusing it is, that after aping yet another GOP press release, Stefan ironically labels me the Democrat lawyers’ “official spokesman.” If that’s true, then the Dems owe me for an awful lot of billable hours. Hmm… perhaps Stefan can help me out on what the going hourly rate is these days for propagandistic shilling?
Second… well… what a bizzaro-world piece of twisted, ass-backwards logic. Turtles are better known for sticking their necks out than our former governor, so if you want conclusive evidence that the train has reached the station, look no further than Locke climbing onboard and announcing its imminent arrival. Don’t get me wrong, I always felt Locke was an honest, well-meaning, competent administrator… but bold leadership isn’t exactly his schtick. If, as Stefan fantasizes, Locke thought the Democrats’ case was in trouble, the last thing he would do is “risk looking like a dope” by calling for Rossi to drop his case.
And of course, to Stefan, his political opponents are never just ceaselessly devious, they are also criminal… or at the very least, unethical:
How would Gary Locke be in a position to know how the trial was shaping up? Curiously, he was brought on as a partner at Davis Wright Tremaine, the firm which is representing the Republicans in the election contest.
I suspect that Gary Locke got a peek at the case his partners’ are preparing, had an “oh, shit!” moment, and felt a desperate urge to throw cold water on Dino Rossi.
That’s a pretty pathetic thing for Locke to do, especially since he has a fiduciary duty to all of his firm’s clients, not just the ones whose politics he shares.
Hey, speaking of “fiduciary duty”… here’s an idea Stefan: maybe Locke is asking Rossi to stop his lawsuit now, because he fears the GOP may be unable to their $3 million (and growing) legal bill? As a partner, such a default would hit Locke squarely in the wallet, and there’s no sense throwing good money after bad.

You have your theories on how this will all turn out….which appear to be on the extreme end of reality. Some of your other regular commenters (dj and especially chew2) seem much more grounded in reality. You Goldy, know exactly how you want this Election Contest to turn out and regularly spin the data to attempt to accomplish your desired end result.
Others, even though they may be LEFT, are realistic. The bottom-line is reasonable people can disagree. YOU however, have guaranteed us Rossi is toast. I think a lot of others who post here are much more reserved about guaranteeing anything. YOU Goldy, have essentially assumed all the variables and underlying assumptions will swing your way and GUARANTEED it. Hey, we all know where you are coming from.
But for a spinmeister like Davif Goldstein to criticize another spinmeister Chris Vance is quite amusing to say the least.

Gary Locke’s asking Rossi to throw in the towel just goes to show how strong Rossi’s case must be.
Rossi’s refusal to quit proves the same thing.
The Shark lays it all out for us here.
Follow the logic:
Gary Locke, after risking everything to get a peek at the super awesome smackdown case Rossi is about to lay on the Dems, realizes that the only thing to do is expose himself by begging Rossi to quit. He does this because he values Gregoire’s job more than his own and because he figures there just might be a chance Rossi might stupidly accept Locke’s advice because Rossi has never been told how solid his case is.
Man, it just doesn’t get any stupider than that. Thanks, Shark, for the gift that just keeps giving.

GS@6: Gregoire is no loser. Your saying it doesn’t make it so, and your wishing it won’t make it so. As for Locke, well…he’s just a mouthpiece like they have in both parties. He happens to fly under the demo banner, but actually, I think he swings both ways; It took someone like Locke to make Dino look good (actually, Locke makes them both look good – but the hair alone would have done that) I don’t hear any dems saying Gregoire is doing a poor job and I know a lot of them. I know a lot of republicans too, and they don’t complain about the job Gregoire is doing either, they don’t resent her, and they don’t fault her, and they haven’t mentioned any areas, including the gas tax, where Dino might have had a better idea. In fact, it’s been a long time since I’ve heard anyone mention ideas and Dino in the same sentence. Like you, and like myself and a whole lot of other people, most of the people I know believe that we need to strive for a better election process and want that to happen. We may never know whether or not Rossi would have made a good governor, and for some people that is a major disappointment. But that doesn’t make Gregorie a loser, Lots of us think she’s doing a fine job. So…I recognize the message you are trying to stay on, but that doesn’t make it the truth. If you’re a fan of Dino’s start promoting his positives, contrast and compare, we haven’t heard any of his pluses in a long time. Marilyn

Black and white, sorry no grey spews:
Most significantly and ironically, the Democrats only used voter crediting to claim someone voted. At the Democrats’ urging, the Judge ruled that source documents, such as poll book signatures will be required, and the Democrats have not produced those. In addition, in many cases their court records are missing or incomplete. “It is safe to say we have serious questions about several hundred people on the Democrats’ list,” said Vance.
from WSRP.ORG
scottd spews:
Interestingly enough, voter crediting was also the evidence Republicans used when they presented their illegal vote list.
Sounds like both sides are going to need to come up with pollbook signatures at trial — doesn’t sound like much of a problem.
What was your point, B&W? What was Vance’s point?
Black and white, sorry no grey spews:
scottd @ 37
having comprehension problems?
Dems pressured the judge into not using voter crediting as a viable method for proving that individuals voted. It is down to the wire and they used the same method to gain evidence of supposed illegal Rossi voters that they asked be in-admissable. THAT is the irony he was refering to.
Mr. X spews:
I’m a lefty, and I agree with pbj – the gas tax initiative will make the ballot easily and pass big.
Black and white, sorry no grey spews:
…and meanwhile as Stefan has pointed out the Republicans are gathering really colorful incriminating depositions from some of King Counties least compitent.
scottd spews:
B&W: At this stage of the game, both sides are only required to come up with lists of illegal voters that they will later prove in trial. Using voter crediting records is the most efficient way to come up with the list, and is sufficient at this stage. The Democrats argued (and Bridges agreed), that both sides will need to ultimately prove that the illegal voters actually cast a ballot, and that only copies of pollbook signatures and absentee ballot envelopes would be sufficient to prove that. I doubt that either side is going to have a problem doing that because the voter crediting error rate has already been shown to be in the range of tenths of a percent. Therefore, the chance of any credited voter not showing up in the pollbook or on a ballot envelope is roughly 1 in a thousand.
Vance’s spin was an attempt to make it look like the Dems would have more of a problem with showing that their illegal voters acutally voted than the Republicans when, in fact, they both used the same method to make their preliminary determination of who voted.
Looks like the spin worked on you, but I doubt that’s setting a very high bar.
Black and white, sorry no grey spews:

B&W @ 42: Read my post @ 41. There’s nothing futile about it. Both Dems and Repubs are required to present a list of their claimed illegal voters before trial. The quickest way to prepare that list is to use computerized records of credited voters and compare them to databases of felons they assembled. That’s fine for the pre-trial phase. When they get to trial, they are going to have to present additional evidence to prove these people actual voted. My guess is, that’s not going to be a problem, for reasons I’ve already outlined.

Otherwise, it looks like Vance is getting desperate because he based his case on illegal votes and that’s starting to fall apart. How do I know that illegal votes are the central part of his case? Because his lawyer said so:
Judge John Bridges kept Republicans’ legal challenge to the November election alive yesterday when he said he would consider statistical analysis showing how many illegal votes each candidate likely got in the governor’s race.
Without that circumstantial evidence, Republican attorney Mark Braden said, “We could not have gone to trial.”
[Seattle Times, May 3, 2005]
He may now be trying to revive other parts of his case, but those parts still have the same problems they had when the GOP initially backed away from them.
Anyway, I’ll check in from time to time in case you change your mind and decide to provide us with any of your insights regarding which parts in the depositions are going to help Rossi. …both would work one’s just more civilized. The truth is that we need a federal grand jury in here, this is so messed up that there needs to be a Roto-rooter style investigation into the mess that was known as an election.
I really could care less about the election contest if we had a real investigation that resulted in convictions of the guilty members in KC. All and all thet would send a more powerful message “DON’T F* WITH THE PEOPLE OF WA!!!” and we’d still get the desired result Gregior would be applying at McDonald’s and Rossi would be reversing her mess.

Evidence?
Or is that another liberal trick from the Bawling Paul play book… you know the one that says “ACCUSE! ACCUSE! ACCUSE! Something’s bound to stick & we’ll convince a few rubes if we repeat the same lie often enough”?

I’m for bigger government and higher taxes. How much sh-t did Jesus own? NONE! But all the bible freaks think you need to own 2 SUV’s and a 4000sq foot house. You think your taxes are way too high but you’re fine knowing the battered womens’s shelters in king county are turning people away because they’re too full. You seem to be fine knowing that milions of americans don’t have health insurance. As long as you guys get your piece of the pie you could give a shit about everyoen else. I wonder what Jesus would think of you greedy bastards. You people make me want to puke.

I think I see how it works. Our system of laws and courts to adjudicate them is only useful if it yields the result you want. If that doesn’t work — break out the pitchforks!
No thanks, I think we’ll stick with the system we have. This may surprise you, but most of us PEOPLE OF WA!!! prefer it that way. If you don’t like that, there’s always the next election to hope for. Good luck to you.
P.S.: Don’t hold your breath waiting for the feds. They are not going to interfere with a case that’s already being handled in state court.

This coming from the same greedy bastard that said “I WANT, I WANT!” @ 46. You need to at least try to be consistent, think how many people we could help if we took the money used for erronious purposes and put it toward those women, HOLY CRAP WE CAN”T HAVE THAT! THERE’S NO TAX INCREASE IN THAT PLAN! Besides that I guess you’d be opposed to the government running efficiently and cost effectively.

When the system has become flawed, and those that are elected to represent us refuse to correct the flaws because it is against their best interests. Then yes it is time for the second amendment to step in. If those who are given the power to protect my freedom only choose to take it away, then it is up to me and other freedom loving Washingtonians/ Americans to take it back. That is what is known as a patriot, one who doesn’t sit back and wait for others to stand up for their rights, the other group is known as slaves.

Chard@20 and 22: Whats with the BFD you’re making about the cookies? People all over the country bring cookies to the office all the time. Who cares? Is this cookie issue an important feature of your argument? Were you trying to illustrate something? What was it? When are you going to start saying something positive about Dino? All you ever mention is Governor Gregoire. Re @20. And no, I don’t assume Governor Gregoire is toast (you did mean Governor Gregoire didn’t you – and not little Chrissy Vance?) Governor Gregoire will be just fine no matter how things turn out. Maybe so will dino. He’ll probably be delighted when this is all over so that he can quit being the GOP’s lead fund raising pimp. So…Chardonnay, keep those cards and letters coming in! Marilyn

“99.99% of our heirs will never be affected by the estate tax” is justification? Why not just take everything from that last 0.01%. Plus it looks like your math is wrong. She said 250 estates per year, which would add up to more “of our heirs”.

I suppose someone has to stick-up for the welfare of the super-wealthy besides the super-wealthy – that communist Bill Gates, Sr. well.. – he’s a class traitor.

Now look here, whose heir is Bill Gates SENIOR and what does he have to do with your twisted logic expressed in post 27?

Bill Gates Sr seems to think the estate tax is an eminently fair tax along with that other communist fellow-traveler Warren Buffet.
In any case, I scratch my head when the wingers get fired up about taxes they’ll almost never have to worry about.
zip spews:

Mr. Gates Sr. made his living sucking the govt. tit at his former law firm. I’ll spell it out for you: he never met a tax he didn’t like because taxes paid his fees. Why should his biased opinion matter?
The taxes you “never have to worry about” are the Democrats who run this state flexing their muscles. Levying taxes only because “we’re in power and we can”. Maybe you should worry: when they run out of rich people to tax they’ll come after something of yours.
WingersAreWhiners spews:
Whiner again @ 87
Regarding Gates – maybe so – maybe he’s just a psycho government lover. How about Buffet?
About the Demo’s. Give me a break.. The estate tax has been around for generations. We haven’t run out of rich people yet..
I’m more worried about alarmist and paranoid wingers than I am about being overtaxed.

And give us some specifics on how that will help goverment work better.

The idea that the nickel tax was supposed to fix the problems was a load of steaming BS. It was only a pittance that was never able to provide all the monies required to fix all the roads in dire need of repair. It didn’t even provide monies for road maintenance.
I tire of the fools who think that all you need to do is cut state goverment spending and everything will be hunky dory. Bush gave you all those tax cuts, but stopped giving the states money, who now have to make up the shortfall somehow.
I’m think you should consider yourselves lucky you don’t have to pay any income tax.
