A currently recommended diary at Daily Kos is tracking the devastating fires afflicting the greater Los Angeles area. It includes links to Los Angeles television stations and reports from Kossacks in the Southern California region.
The situation certainly sounds severe and we extend our best wishes to our fellow citizens in California who have suffered losses. Here’s hoping things improve quickly.

The four seasons of L.A:
fire, flood, earthquake and riot.
Maybe replace riot with smog alerts but it just doesn’t have the same ring.
That’s more or less why I left.

Have they deployed or hired the big Air Tankers yet? I have seen what look like converted P-3 Orions assisting in the firefighting efforts on the news, but there are 2 other types out there that could deliver a heavier load. One, Tanker 910, a converted DC-10, and another, from Evergreen International, Tanker 947, a converted 747. They got some drawbacks, inlcuding being expensive.

Its God burning out the heathens from hollywood. That whole place is the asshole of the earth. (Except the fine folks who banned the fags).

Too bad they cannot call in the Martin Mars flying boats, the most powerful water-bombers out there. The company that operates them, does a good job, but they are usually called in only when the fires are pretty big.

By the way, in the early days of aerial forest fire fighting, they were using war-surplus flying boats and bombers. The Liberal thing of converting Swords into Plowshares, I guess. It continues to this day, and there will be more P-3s available as they are due to be replaced in US Navy service by the P-8, a converted 737.
