President Bush has yet to make another foray into a district sporting a netroots challenger.
But this Wednesday, First Lady Laura Bush will be in Medina WA, headlining an exclusive, $500 per person fundraiser in an effort to jumpstart Reichert’s flailing campaign, and… well… we just can’t let this happen unanswered. That’s why we’re joining together again in an effort to raise 250 additional contributions over the next few days.
As Darcy says, there are more of us than there are of them. Help us prove it, and send the message that Republican congressional candidates can’t profit by toeing the Bush line. Every little bit counts, so please give today.

You know how Reagan used to talk about how he was going to cut waste in the federal government?
I remember a line from the book by his first budget director (Stockman?). He (and the other Republicans) complained that Carter had cut back on the frequency the White House offices were cleaned, in order to save money. The first thing the Republicans did was make sure the cleaning staff emptied their trash, dusted, and vacumed their rugs every single day. After all, that was what was important (to them), wasn’t it??????
Then they cut taxes, and insisted that Stockman adjust his “projections” of rapid economic improvement to show that the budget would soon be balanced. Of course, it wasn’t. That didn’t happen until after eight years of Democratic rule under Clinton (who happened to come into office during a rescession). Yet the current Republican administration, abetted by the Republican Congress for six years, squandered that deficit and has achieved record-setting budget deficits which may take another generation to correct.
The Republicans continually push the shameful lie that they are against big government, and that the Democrats are wasteful spenders. The exact opposite is true.

The big difference with Enron is that the sheer size of the debacle was something whichi was made possible only because of the Republican administration’s insistence on rapid and near-complete deregulation of the energy industry. This allowed Enron to achieve both a near-monopoly of energy in the western states both vertically (controlling the plants and the distribution networks) and horizontally (engaging in a massive effort to buy up ultility companies, both public and private). This control of the market was what allowed them to manipulate and create the “energy crisis” in California, which (conveniently for the Republicans) ended up in an unusual recall election against the California Governor and replacement with a Republican actor (who has moved away from the Bush line as he has matured in office).
The fuzzy accounting and the phoney lease deals were just sheer foolishness on the part of the Enron executives, as they couldn’t tolerate even a small dip in the stock prices which might affect their stock options or bonuses.

Clinton DID NOT come into office during a recession. The economy had already recovered and began a rapid upturn at the time of the election. There WAS a recession by the end of Clinton’s second term.
