When the Nevada Democrats and FOX News decided to host a debate for the Democratic candidates, some folks wondered… why? FOX is openly hostile to Democrats. They are biased against Democrats, and go out of their way to lie about Democrats.
So John Edwards told them to fuck off.
You may have heard by now that John Edwards was the first candidate to officially say no to the Fox News debate in Nevada — and because of the hard work of so many grassroots and netroots Democrats, news is breaking tonight that Fox is out.
Fox has already started striking back at John for saying no. (There’s a surprise – Fox attacking a Democrat.) Last night, Roger Ailes – the life-long Republican operative who is now Chairman of Fox News Channel – said that any candidate “who believes he can blacklist any news organization is making a terrible mistake” and “is impeding freedom of speech and free press.”
[…]
Fox News has already proven they have no intention of providing “fair and balanced” coverage of any Democrat in this election.
In recent weeks they have run blatant lies about Senator Obama’s background. And Fox was only too happy to give Ann Coulter a platform to spew more hate a few days after her bigoted attack on Senator Edwards and the gay community.
Now it’s time for Democrats to stand together and send a clear message to Roger Ailes, Fox News and all the rest of them: bias isn’t balance, but turning tables is fair.
Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton, when faced with the facts, weren’t able to decide before the debate was canceled. Bill Richardson accepted the debate invitation only to decline hours before the Nevada Democrats pulled the plug. While I understand Richardson’s hesitation (he’s betting the farm on a good showing in his neighbor state), Obama and Clinton have no excuse. FOX News has called Obama a Muslim terrorist, and their crimes against the Clinton family are well known.
I’m an Edwards guy, but I hope all the candidates get some clarity about who’s on our side and who’s not. Or maybe they’ll just get some “brass ones.”

Edwards wants it both ways on the debates. He wants liberals to believe he told Fox to fuck off, and he wants moderates(1) to believe that it was just one of those things.
I’m glad he did the right thing, I just wish he’d done it for the right reason, and had the balls to say so out loud.

Good grief. That’s an attack on Democrats by the guy running FOX News, again. And it is the best reason for Nevada Democrats to pull the plug on Fox News.
There are plenty of other media outlets who could organize and telecast the debate which don’t come with baggage like Roger Ailes.

John Barelli spews:
Moderates are not folks with no passion about politics, but we are folks that insist on understanding both sides of an issue before forming an opinion. We tend to avoid “knee-jerk” opinions that simply follow the “party line” or follow any particular leader.
An example that tends to inflame folks. Abortion.
Knee-jerk conservatives refuse to consider anything that might allow a woman to terminate a pregnancy under any conditions, and will work to stop anything that might look like compromise. A proposal to provide for prenatal care will meet opposition if it also includes counseling that mentions the possibility of abortion under any circumstances.
Knee-jerk liberals will refuse to consider even the most reasonable restrictions (example – parental notification with a judicial review option in cases of suspected or potential abuse). A fourteen year old girl needs parental permission to get her ears pierced, but not for a life-altering medical procedure.
Moderates will look at this and realize that the answer is somewhere between the two extremes.
In fact, most of the time the answer will be somewhere between the two extremes. We look at “passionate” conservatives that are willing to do anything to forward their causes. Lie, cheat, steal, fraud, extortion. Anything is OK, as long as it advances their causes, and most liberals (quite correctly) call them on it.
We have folks that are willing to use the same tactics for “liberal” causes. Our “passionate liberals” are certain that they know better than the rest of the country, and will use any tactic that advances the “liberal” agenda. It almost doesn’t seem to matter whether the idea is good or bad. Only whether it is labeled “liberal” or “conservative”.
“Moderate” does not mean simply going down the middle on every issue. It simply means honestly considering all sides before forming an opinion, and being willing to reconsider that opinion based on new information (regardless of where the information comes from).
Unless they are simply lying to us, most of the announced Democratic candidates are “moderates” to some degree. Certainly Mr. Edwards is a moderate liberal, as are Mr. Obama and Mr. Richardson. (I have no idea about Ms. Clinton’s actual position.) They are passionate about their issues, but also know that they have a responsibility to actually think about the issues and consider all points of view before forming an opinion.
Right-wing candidates in recent years have rarely been “moderate”, although they have worked hard to present themselves that way to the electorate, as they know that extreme views (from either side) are unacceptable to most intelligent people. “Dittos” may be an acceptable decision making technique for followers of Ms. Coulter and Mr. Limbaugh, but not for most people. That’s why they had to hide their actual agenda behind lies and misdirection.
(The Republicans have been chasing our their “moderates” for several years now. Many of them have become Democrats. Jim Webb is an excellent example.)
So, while some “uber-liberals” (including some here) would emulate the tactics of the neo-cons, because they know that their views are unacceptable to most people, there will continue to be moderates, such as yours truly, who will call them on it. We’ve learned that when we aren’t “passionate” enough, the extremes take over, and that is bad for everyone.
Will spews:

Publican dick suckers like Johnboy would have us bring a knife to fight guys with guns. That kind of thinking led to 12 years of John’s friends in the Publican party trying to destroy our country.

Richard Pope spews:
This will help Fox’s ratings, and also help them broadcast the sort of news they like. Fox has by far the highest ratings of any cable news channel. Fox viewers really aren’t interested in seeing Democrats anyway. No one would have watched the Democrat presidential debate, and Fox would have lost advertising revenue. Fox has offered the Democrats equal time. If this trend continues, Fox will be able to broadcast multiple debates of Republican presidential candidates, without hardly having to give any coverage whatsoever to Democrats. And Fox’s ratings will increase, as more viewers realize that Democrats don’t like the network.
As for the criticism of Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton, that is unjustified. They were showing the character and courage — “brass ones” as you put it — that is essential for serving in a tough job like President of the United States. They had the strength and confidence to appear and Fox News, while John Edwards was a cut-and-run coward.
John Barelli spews:
Ah, my favorite example of our own version of the neo-cons, Mr. Stupid has entered into the conversation.
Yes, this is the person that has said that we need to be just as dishonest, just as crooked and be willing to cheat just as much as the worst of the neo-cons.
He(?) certainly understands that the uber-left wing policies are every bit as unacceptable to the average voter as the neo-con policies were, and that to get his favored policies into place, the voters must be mislead and lied to. (You will note that he carefully conceals his actual identity, while I’m out here using my own name and reputation.)
Fortunately, we have very few people willing to lie, cheat and steal in order to win. Mr. Stupid is one of those folks, but being that he doesn’t even have the courage of his convictions, I have questions as to whether or not he is actually a neo-con troll just posting absurdities in order to then re-post them on the right-wing blogs under another name as examples of just how corrupt we are.
Now he’s graduated from name calling up to death threats, as he really doesn’t like anyone shining the light of day on him.
Fortunately for me, he’s also a coward.

Fortunately, cowards like Johnboy who pretend to be Dems are being exposed. The reason we won in Nov is that the asswipes like Johnboy got put in their place, i.e. the back of the bus.
“Average” voters voted overwhelmingly to support the liberal (NOT) moderate positions of the Dems. Johnboy’s favorite “news” channel Fox even said so.

Hello.
John Barelli, you are a man after my own heart. I tend to think of political issues with what I call the 10/10/80 rule. Basically on any issue, there are 10% right wing extremists, 10% left wing extremists, and then the rest of us. Unfortunately, that 20% minority is generally all we hear from when it comes to said issues, and they use there extreme views to paint an issue in it’s most extreme form. You give a really great example with abortion. I remember the arguments that were given by the extremes on both sides when the bankruptcy reform was being done. I have come to learn that the more the 10/10 crowd wails and nashes their teeth about an issue, the more likely there is an agenda. I no longer rely on their screaming, and in that, I have become a dangerous thing to them: An informed independant.
Thank you

Easy there, big fella. I applaud Obama for bringing a gun to a gun fight, but I’m with John Barelli on the virtues of moderates and moderation.
Let me cite an example: It’s like — no, I’d be invoking the Godwin rule with that one. OK. I’ve got it. It’s like Spiderman vs. the Green Goblin. Can you imagine Spiderman threatening a whole bunch of innocent people in order to defeat the Green Goblin? Of course not. Can you imagine Spidey being a pacifist, either? Of course not.
It’s like the difference between hitting someone clean on the football field or in a hockey game and playing dirty. We need to develop the rep as hard clean hitters. Kerry didn’t, but Obama (with kicking Fox off his plane) and Edwards are definitely out to develop that rep, it looks like.
(Um … I looked at the Edwards link and didn’t see any indication that it sounded like a scheduling conflict. Am I missing anything?)
I shed no tears for the demise of the Fox debate. But let’s look at it another way: What if Brit Hume had asked something as memorably stupid as his question from 2003, which, IIRC, was along the lines of since the Medicare “reform” was law, it was wrong to criticize it. I would’ve loved to have seen a candidate just fix him with a withering glare and say “Are you really that stupid? Didn’t you take middle school civics? You’re that ignorant of how government works and yet you’re an anchor of a news network?” and then launch into a blistering critique of the plan. That would’ve woken everyone up.
John Barelli spews:
Lucy, I never said you couldn’t.
I also haven’t heard you advocate lying or cheating in elections in order to win.
Yes, there are “centrists” who seem to adjust their beliefs in order to appeal to the widest electorate. Sadly, I see Ms. Clinton in this category, and you’ve got a good point about Mr. Lieberman, although he does seem to have accurately judged the mood of the people of Connecticut.
Many of the folks that are angriest at him are the “party above all” crowd, and they’ve actually done him a lot of good, as he will effectively be much more powerful now than had he simply gotten elected as a Democrat. As I really have some issues (entirely aside from the election) with him, this bothers me.
Not much, mind you, as he is not my Senator, and I can’t do much about him, so I refuse to worry about it.
The Republicans have been working very hard at running their moderates out of the party. Lincoln Chaffee was a pretty good example of that. It was almost too bad that the race for the Senate was so close, as I think we need solid moderate Republicans.
It was so close that we had to get that seat in order to have the opportunity to undo many of the problems that the neo-cons have caused, but it is unfortunate that we have kept many of the most radical of the neo-cons and lost one of the few reasonable voices left on that side of the aisle.

These scumbags have created a political environment in this country that makes reasoned debate impossible. So be it. I say, if they want a gunfight, we’ve gotta show up and we’ve gotta bring guns, too. Republicans are Nazis, and if we learned anything from the Thirties, we should have learned there’s no safety in rolling over for Nazis — that just makes it easier for them to kill you. Hard-core liberals can’t stand the Fox News Channel. Passing a television that’s tuned to the conservative favorite forces many of them to close their eyes, cover their ears and scream, “La la la la la la la la la!” Then they dash to their computers and fire off 2,500 e-mails condemning the outlet, none of which are ever read.
But liberals’ aversion to Fox News has finally gone over the top. The Nevada Democratic Party had agreed to let the right-tilting network co-sponsor, of all things, an August debate in Reno between Democratic presidential candidates. Party officials were serious about drawing national attention to the state’s January presidential caucus, the country’s second in the 2008 nominating process. What better way for the party to reach conservative and “values” voters who might consider changing allegiances?
But the socialist, Web-addicted wing of the Democratic Party was apoplectic. The prospect of having to watch Fox News to see their own candidates would have been torture in itself. So they set the blogosphere aflame with efforts to kill the broadcast arrangement, or at least have all the candidates pull out of the event. Before Friday, the opportunistic John Edwards was the only candidate to jump on that bandwagon.
You’d think the deal called for having Sean Hannity and Ann Coulter mock the candidates between comments. No, even unfiltered, unedited, live debate between loyal Democrats couldn’t be entrusted to Fox News.
The approach of outfits such as MoveOn.org is so juvenile it’s laughable. Imagine if every political organization created litmus tests for news organizations before agreeing to appear on their programming. Republicans would have boycotted PBS, CBS, NBC, ABC, National Public Radio and The Associated Press decades ago.
This hyperventilation results from the fact that far-left Democrats have no comparable media outlet, nor any widespread national appeal, for their radical views in favor of heavy-handed regulation, wealth redistribution, diplomatic capitulation and economic protectionism. So they attack their rivals’ messenger with a reckless barrage of rhetoric that cuts down their own allies with friendly fire.
By Friday, the Nevada Democratic Party caved in to the lunatic fringe and beganseeking a more “appropriate” television partner.

@46 “No, even unfiltered, unedited, live debate between loyal Democrats couldn’t be entrusted to Fox News.”
That’s exactly correct, and that’s why Democrats were right to pull out. Letting Fox moderate a debate between Democratic candidates is about as smart as letting the RNC moderate it. It’s the same thing.
But there’s another point you’re missing here, IDGAF. And that’s Ailes’ extremely offensive smear against Barack Obama. First of all, any CEO of a legitimate news organization who publicly said something like that would be forced to resign. Second, if Democrats DON’T boycott Fox after the remark, it legitimizes Ailes’ behavior — and encourages more of the same. Third, a “news organization” is supposed to be neutral and such a bald-faced partisan attack on one of the debate participants clearly disqualifies said “news organization” from moderating the debate. Fourth, Ailes wasn’t speaking for himself, he was speaking in his capacity as head of Fox, and the network deserves to be punished for his/its behavior. Fifth, why on God’s green earth should Democrats aid and facilitate these kinds of vicious attacks on them by cooperating with the attackers? Fuck you, IDGAF! Liberals don’t roll over for fascist smearmongers anymore. What I would prefer to see is Obama walk up to Ailes and punch him in the mouth for that remark. The $800K was a nuisance settlement; Jones got virtually none of it, he basically paid her legal bills. Did Clinton lie to a grand jury? Yep, that part is right. If I’d been a sitting U.S. Senator voting on impeachment, I would have voted for removal, because I think any office holder who lies to a grand jury should be gone. I also agree with the Arkansas bar’s imposition of a 5-year suspension. Clinton was a lawyer, and as such, an officer of the court; and lawyers can’t lie to courts, period. If I did that, I would be disbarred, and properly so. I see no reason why he should get preferential treatment.
Now, Redneck, what about Libby? Libby was convicted by a jury of lying to a grand jury, among other things. Do you think he should he be pardoned? Wouldn’t a Libby pardon represent ultimate hypocrisy by the Bushies who called for Clinton’s head? What’s your position on a Libby pardon, Redneck?
By the way, thanks for pumping my gas into your Hummer! I appreciate your business. My oil stock is about another $3 this week.

If the Paula Jones case was on the up-and-up, why did Jones have lawyers like Ann Coulter working secretly on the case, and getting paid secretly by Richard Scaife? If she had a legitimate claim, why didn’t she hire a real lawyer, and sue him on a contingency fee basis, like everyone else does?

Hard core liberals, soft core liberals, moderates, intellectuals, reasonable people and anyone that cares about objective truth can’t stand the Faux News Channel.
And when we do somehow hear something on Faux News, we do not generally bother to send off 2500 e-mails. We will check the actual facts (which usually bear no resemblance to the Faux News story). We may post it here, to amuse others and generally enjoy one of our favorite pastimes, which is picking apart the neo-cons.
Our aversion to Faux News is something akin to Christians’ aversion to hungry lions. We know that we’ll win in the end, but would prefer to avoid becoming lion chow in the process.
Well, the idea of the Faux News Channel making money off of one of our functions is annoying (no secret that we really don’t like them) but I think “apoplectic” is a bit much.
Yes, the Republicans might well try to avoid news organizations that make an attempt to offer unbiased information.
Please note that I did not say that they always succeed. Many journalists are personally liberal, and see things from a liberal perspective. Journalism is a relatively low-paying job that attracts idealists. Altruistic idealists tend to be somewhat liberal. Who would have guessed?
How true.
Well, considering that Faux News is trying (and failing) to be Comedy Central, maybe Comedy Central would be a better venue. I could deal with Jon Stewart as moderator.

Oh, as if there was any real competition for the title, Ms. Coulter has once again captured the honor. I don’t think that she’s that important. Personally, I would think that Omar Hasan Ahmad al-Bashir, or perhaps Than Shwe, or even Osama bin Laudin would rank higher than her.
Not that she doesn’t try.

Sorry, Mr. Stupid.
I don’t spend every moment on this blog. I have this thing called a “life”. It includes little things like “work” and “family”. I highly recommend that you get one as well.
Now, looking back through the posts, I’m trying to find one of your posts where I “backed up, shut up and hid” from anything that spewed from your cowardly little keyboard.
You did repeat yourself after I answered you the first time. I suppose that I could repeat my earlier post, but it really isn’t necessary.
Let’s see. You stated that I was a “traitor” and “don’t deserve to breath American air” (your post 03/10/2007 at 10:24 am).
You’d better hope that I stay very healthy. I’m a rather obnoxious old SOB, and have been known to really piss some folks off, but most of them aren’t stupid enough to make statements like that on public internet blogs. Death threats are taken seriously.
Of course, I don’t take you very seriously. You’re just a worthless coward.
Still, I’m told that I must love my enemies, so I would offer this prayer. May God bless and keep you, far away from me.
Oh, and about that “life” thing? I really do recommend getting one. Try it, you might like it.

re 61: Lieberman votes with the Republicans on all the issues that matter.
We need to strip him of his seniority. We don’t need that Trojan Horse in a position of power. He thinks he’s in the catbird seat right now.
Stripped of seniority, he is stripped of power — and Holy Joe is all about his personal clout.
Just the threat of taking away that seniority would force him to see things our way.
That’s politics!
As for me being “born stupid”, I think we are all to a great extent TABULA RASA’S at birth, with a predilection to growing into sloving life’s problems or becoming a bitter ,finger pointing caster of blame.
You, as a consevative, have chosen the low road — the Republican Wingnut road.

John Barelli spews:
Lucy
As little as I like it, Mr. Lieberman has a far more effective threat he can make in return.
The Republicans would be happy to recognize his seniority.
Of course, it would only last a couple of years, until we could gain another seat, but it would put us two more years behind, and there’s no telling what mischief the Republicans could cause in those two years. They could certainly derail any investigations into the misdeeds of the Bush administration, and continue to push through far-right judges, while protecting the President from then necessity of vetoing popular legislation.
As it is, we put up with Mr. Lieberman, and retain leadership and control of the Senate. The chairs and majority positions are too important to give up in order to punish Mr. Lieberman.
Once we have a larger majority, it would not surprise me to find Mr. Lieberman put into somewhat less prominent roles, and he’ll never be majority leader, or a serious candidate for national office.
That will have to do.

“In March 2005, Paula Jones appeared on the debut show of Lie Detector on Pax TV, produced by Mark Phillips Philms & Telephision, and was given a polygraph exam. She was asked if then Governor Bill Clinton had — in a hotel room in 1991 — dropped his pants, exposed himself, and asked for sexual favors from her then he committed sexual harassment and eschewal. Jones said yes and the polygraph operator determined she was telling the truth. Lie Detector offered to test Clinton but thus far he has not responded to the request.” Golly, I wonder why?

John Barelli spews:
So, Puddybud, why wouldn’t President Clinton go onto a commercial TV program with dubious integrity and subject himself to a polygraph (“lie detector”) test?
Could it be that he has no particular need to prove anything, and that regardless of the outcome of the “lie detector” test, the right wingers wouldn’t believe anything other than what they already think?
Could it be that no matter what the outcome of the test, it would be a serious detriment to his wife’s campaign for him to go on national TV and bring this whole mess back into the front pages?
Could it be that polygraph examinations are notoriously unreliable to the extent that they are not even allowed in court testimony as supporting evidence?
https://antipolygraph.org/articles/article-018.shtml
Could it be that this whole thing is simply being used as a distraction from the real corruption and crimes being committed by members of the Bush administration?
Answer: All of the above.

What is it with your preoccupation and fascination with male genitalia? Does nearly every, single, post of yours have to include a reference to oral copulation or some act of sexuality? These references are almost exclusively intended, overtly and sub-textually, to make the object of your bile seem effete, soft, or pusillanimous. Personally, as a gay man, such comments are repugnant – yet du rigor – coming from the Right; inexcusable from the Left.
