The ship is a bulk carrier with a helopad. Those pipe-like things may enclose conveyor belts used for loading bulk cargo (wheat, corn, coal, ore, etc.) on ships. The waterway looks like an excavated channel with riprap on the far bank. The steeply pitched shed roofs suggest the buildings are in a snow zone. Can’t tell if this scene is domestic or foreign, but the vegetation (tho hard to see clearly) is consistent with the Pacific Northwest, so I’m gonna guess Port of Kalama.

Roger Rabbitspews:
I’m not sure what’s above the bank across the channel, but there appears to be a staircase going down to the water with a small ranch house directly behind it, and somehow I feel that’s an important clue. This sure looks like Columbia River landscape.

Liberal Scientistspews:
I was thinking the same thing.
I didn’t see anything in Kalama, nor the Sacramento delta, though I wasn’t comprehensive there (yet)
This one in Portland is close: http://www.bing.com/maps/?v=2&.....top=0~0~0~
But not right…
…keep searching

Liberal Scientistspews:
Looks like handymax sized geared bulk carrier – unfortunately there are thousands of them. Haven’t identified the livery yet
5
Johnny Rebspews:
It’s a 4 hatch handy, with whirlie’s. Cargo appears to be either Salt or cement. Appears that the crane is either unloading or leveling cargo. I suspect that it is unloading. There are no loading pipes( Bueller’s etc) at that dock.

Tell me it’s not on the Snake, and I’ll stop looking there.
I’m looking in Louisiana right now – though anywhere on the Gulf coast, or as someone above note, intercoastal waterway, could work. Great Lakes, too. There are SO many little nooks and crannies like where that ship is berthed. I feel like I’m missing a big clue, because otherwise it’s a mindless needle-in-haystack search, and I know Lee wouldn’t do that to us!
I’m not convinced the roof are all that peaked, indicating the snow zone as RR suggested (though it seems that RR is ALWAYS right, in my experience) ;)

christi sspews:
looks like water on the other side of the railroad at the top of the picture. shipping canal and salt flat or water separated by a railroad. hmmmm.
not erie, suez or panama canals, that i can tell.
i think the “low end” construction on the buildings is a clue – metal barn sheds, not a major port facility.
the pitch of the roof may not mean snow – it may have to do with the auger system. you have to have the right pitch to let gravity work.
a 4 hatch handymax for bulk. could be anywhere, but I’m liking the Gulf idea, LibSci.
16
Liberal Scientistspews:
OK…some progress…I think the livery is UBC – United Bulk Carriers
Could be Sacramento or Stockton … but it’s not (I think)
18
Liberal Scientistspews:
I looked around Sacramento a bit, though not completely comprehensively, and didn’t see it (obviously).
Oh yeah – Lee said is wasn’t on a river – and I think that leaves out the whole Sac delta system (though I guess SF Bay, San Pablo bay might still count.

wes.in.waspews:

not galveston or houston

Outside US?
22
christi sspews:
wes – i buy that. it seems that these suckers tend to be where there’s a good deal of sand dredging or industry with a need for sand (ship painting, sand blasting, etc)
Lee: where are ya dude? Oh, for the love of a clue!
@34
Nice work! This one was certainly a challenge. I deserve to be called evil for this one. :)

Yes he’s evil. But so’s the new bing maps version; the link I posted @34 uses the “classic” version, a little easier to control the viewpoint.

I was right. It’s in the snow zone.
41
wes.in.waspews:
@40 Maybe it’s a boatload of Florida snow being shipped to Vancouver for the Olympics.

It’s not on a river.

@6 Nothing that big gets above Bonneville Dam anyway. I’ve no clue, so someone else gets it this week.

I would guess is somewhere in Holland probably Rotterdam.

Intercoastal Waterway?
tpn spews:
It’s a grain vessel offloading in China.

There’s a bunch of those suckers up and down the columbia and the multnomah. carrying to the bulk facilities.
alas, this particular one is eluding me

I’ll give two clues:
– In the U.S.
– The ship must sail west to get to open water.
Liberal Scientist spews:
Hmmm…
West coast, obviously, but maybe gulf coast of Florida, if Lee is evil ;)
Steve spews:
When I first saw it I thought it was so butt-ugly it made me think of Richmond.
Liberal Scientist spews:
That was my first thought also – upper SF bay, Valejo, up by the mothball fleet, Martinez, etc.

Port or Stockton?
Justin spews:
Port OF Stockton?
Liberal Scientist spews:
Oh – somebody mentioned salt – what about the Morton salt ponds at the south end of SF bay? I didn’t see it there, but may have missed it

there are two of these that I see around here. both near Glacier Northwest plants – one in oregon and one on the duwamish.
i have one word for you: cement! ;)

Puddy thought the Erie Canal system but up close the pictures turn black and white.
wes.in.wa spews:
Erie’s a small canal, for animal-drawn boats.
Puddybud is Sad for Steve's Loss spews:
Not all of the canal is “small” Wes. Some of it was integrated into the natural river system
wes.in.wa spews:
Port Sutton, FL. East side of Tampa Bay. Far more urban than immediate context suggests … and far shorter “canal” than we were thinking.
