Birds Eye View Contest

by Lee — Saturday, 12/20/08, 7:00 pm

The answer to last week’s contest was Vienna, VA. The big winner was ‘tgf.’ Extra credit to Toby Nixon for figuring out who actually owns that house. The internet really is a wonderful thing…

Here’s this week’s, good luck!

This is obviously a bullfighting arena in some South American shithole country ruled by a rightwing military dictator.

    Found it!

    Murcia, Spain

Real tough to find in part because Live Maps aerial views are missing and I had you use Google Maps to locate things for a Bird’s Eye view.

I practically looked at every bullring in Spain before locating it.

I should also mention that Google Images is devoid of any image that looks like this bullring, and even after finding the city, a search for “Murcia bullring” (or variations) comes up with nothing like it.

    Murcia, Spain. Bullring.

That doesn’t look like the Murcia bullring, unless Murcia has more than one bullring.

It’s not the Plaza de Toros de Murcia.

It looks like it could be the Plaza de Toros de Las Ventas in Madrid.

Roger, while you were mouthing off regarding the wrong continent, I was searching for it. It was quite evident it was a bullring. The question was which one.

    Thbbft!

Search for “plaza de toros murcia” and you get a pretty good picture on the first Google image page here:

You can see the little checkerboard plaza with its statue or whatever.

@13 It could have been worse. At least I’m not a Republican who claims to be a foreign policy expert because she can see Russia from her back porch.

@13 (continued) My first impression was that maybe it was a round soccer field but I quickly ruled that out because it doesn’t have any goalposts.

There was half a chance it could have been a cricket field (pitch?) as well, I guessed but those are a lot bigger, I thought. The smart money was all on bull ring, clearly.

Reminds me of the bullfighting ring in my wife’s hometown of Aguascalientes, Mexico. I’ve been there a couple of times, its in the center of the city amongst some ancient buildings and a cathedral from the year +/- 1600 or something, and I got a chuckle out of this large sign on the outer wall of the bull ring, where one would typically find a will call or ticket sales office…it was a one word sign “TEQUILA”.

Where are the parking lots? Look at it! Are those apartment buildings just across the street. Don’t foreigners understand zoning?

    @19…RR…

Not dirt, sand…you have to have a surface with good drainage for all the blood. Dirt just gets messy and muddy, while sand allows all the blood to be absorbed and can be easily smoothed over for the next day’s matches.

Sand is what the Romans used.
