I will admit that it is difficult to find something positive to say about Senator Helms.
But Mr. Helms and his wife adopted a nine-year-old boy with cerebral palsy and gave him a good home. At least one person’s life was made better because of Mr. Helms.

11 – You’re fucking A right Mr. C. I’m an atheist and a progressive. I don’t believe in things for which there are no evidence. Just because you say God exists doesn’t mean I have to buy it. And if having a “soul” means I’m a mean-spirited ghoul who delights in grabbing a buck faster than the other guy, I want no part of that. No sale.
I’m a progressive because I believe in progress and to me progress means the greatest good for the greatest number. That implies an even playing field between the haves and have nots in our society. So that means a heavy priority on a sustainably growing economy, education, civil rights and our society picking up the slack where the market fails like it has so clearly in health care. Oh and things that threaten progress like endless wars and occupations played on Faux News Channel for right-wing armchair generals I’m totally opposed to.
We had a lot of progress in this country after WWII – through Harry Truman, Ike, JFK and LBJ. It all started going to crap with Nixon even though (hard to believe it) he did a few progressive things. Ronnie Raygun slid this country’s demise into overdrive – after that, everything good had to be for the richest. If the rich didn’t like it, it was bad.
That needs to change but fast.

It’s impossible to even the playing field. Some people are born more introverted, because of such they will always struggle for the same level of social success as someone more extroverted. If you’re born good-looking, social life will be easier for you. Social success translates to business success. What’s the solution, government plastic surgery programs?
In a country of freedom of choice, some people make bad choices. How can you even the playing field when people are making bad choices? Not just choices that sends their own life down the wrong path but choices that ruin the lives of others like immature idiots having offspring. What can the government do to put those kids on an even playing field with let’s say your children.
What makes America so great is there is nothing stopping one from becoming one of the haves. There are no requirements to be a millionaire. Color doesn’t matter. Sex doesn’t matter. Sexual preference doesn’t matter. College degree or high school dropout. One of the richest in the teevee business is a fat black female that grew up in poverty. Sure we are a country of haves and have-nots, but the difference is more of a matter of faith in ones self instead of luck. Look how many “lucky” lottery millionaires end up bankrupt. Sure, some people pass their wealth down to their children, aren’t you?
Life is not fair, the sooner it’s learned the better off one will be. There will be disappointments even when one believes they have “earned” it.
We’ll soon see how the right react to the death of a prominent liberal senator. Ted Kennedy ain’t gonna be around for too many more years. If the righties take the higher road, they won’t make nasty comments about Ted after he’s gone as the lefties have done here with Jesse Helms.

How about start with a decent school that’s clean, well-ventilated, safe, warm in the winter, cool during the hot months with meal programs?

Civil rights mean in part that the consequences for bad choices are fairly adjudicated regardless of race, creed, etc.

I didn’t like Jesse Helms. He reminded me of the old dude that ran us lads off the baseball diamond one Sunday with the message, “No ball playin’ on Sunday!” I grew up in an area dominated by Fundamentalist Christians, you see. They believed that, to keep holy the Sabbath, you were forbidden to play baseball on Sunday.
