In Clark County’s 17th District, state Senator Don Benton, R-Vancouver, has pulled narrowly ahead of challenger David Carrier in today’s count. Benton leads 50.22% to Carrier’s 49.67%. It’s a margin of 269 votes. Carrier had led by about 150 votes on election night.
Unfortunately for Carrier, for whatever reason, as the counting goes on Republican totals always seem to improve. It’s not over until it’s over, and a mandatory recount certainly seems possible, but obviously today’s count would seem to bode well for Benton’s chances.

Damn. That’s disappointing. Still, the Dems have a 2-1 majority in the Senate and a similar position in the House. And now that Gov. Gregoire has a solid victory, the can shift a bit to the left. Not that there’s money to fund any progressive programs at the moment…
George spews:
it is amazing that Benton is still in office – He has a Lesbaian daughter and then votes against gay and lesbians cause God told him to do so (open story in media)
one of those solidly loving parents the far right generates…
here is hoping he looses by one vote, cause that is what god wants to happen…
Denise Parkin spews:
I am appalled at what was written by George – what right do you have to comment on anyone’s family. His daughter did not stand up for election – and therefore you have no place to be commenting on her or any of Benton’s family. I am absolutely sure the new DEMOCRATIC president would point out to you that you live in a Democracy – and you clearly do not know what that means. You have democratic rights – and so do Don Benton’s family and you have just invaded them!!!!
There are words to describe people like you too but we choose not to use them.
George spews:
Senator Benton’s crass non support of his daughter is the source of feelings of great sadness, for him and his maladjusted concept of parental love – and – for her, for I am sure she deserves better..
Benton’s supporters and he himself need to look to VP Dick Cheney for enlightenment- he has not rejected his lesbian daughter. And, certainly is as Republican and Christian as Benton.
Benton talked about all this on the floor of the legislature, all quite public long ago.
