The people giving to the anti-trans people pooping in public bathrooms initiative sure are, um, colorful. No shitty. Sorry, I spelled shitty wrong that first time.

Oh, Pen Thread?

by Carl Ballard — Monday, 4/10/17, 7:01 am

So Ed Murray maybe abused some children in the 1980’s? Obviously, fuck that guy if it’s true.

It’s tough to evaluate the claims and counter-claims. My first instinct is to believe people when they say they’ve been victims. And while I certainly don’t think the numbers game is really helpful (1 is enough), 3 people?

So, I guess we’re at war now? Cool. Right? It’s super cool. I assume that our pro-Trump trolls will be too busy joining the military to defend those people who we’re killing and also wouldn’t let into the country.

I realize that you don’t have to take the same stance as the person you voted for on everything military related (I was protesting the Afghanistan war in 2001 and have been pretty consistently against drones, but somehow voted for people who were considerably more hawkish than me for pretty much every position ever). Still and all, if you voted for president “bomb the shit out of them” you maybe have more of an obligation to put your money where your mouth is.

I’m approximately the billionth person to mourn the hiatus of Capitol Hill Seattle. If there are 2 things they did well, it’s great hyper local news and paying their writers.

Here’s hoping for an eventual return.

Daerht Nepo

by Carl Ballard — Monday, 4/3/17, 7:00 am

It’s pretty amazing how unified we were as a society on Japanese Interment. Sure, if you’d sampled the Japanese population, you could get some very different results than the general population. And there were deserters among the general population. Individuals, and sometimes whole towns. Still, I was surprised to learn that there was only one newspaper paper that opposed the camps. I hope it’s a call for all of us to do better going forward.

I’m really psyched about Councilmember González’ announcement of a legal defense fund for people facing deportation. It’s important that people have the right to defend themselves. I hope that we can make this a long-term thing to outlast the current news cycle, or even the current administration.

Cell service in the Bus Tunnel* is here for T-Mobile users and will be here for everybody soon. And if you need to call 9-1-1, you can no matter what carrier you have.

It’s an overall good, but there are downsides. I will be sad to see the end of people being too loud getting cut off by a tunnel. What a joy that always is, gone because technology is amazing.

Today’s entry in the Miloscia is the worst category: Seriously, what the fuck? “We want to make sure Washington State has adequate voting rights” “Are you a Christian? Lady in a hijab, are you a Christian?” I mean.

I have great admiration for Seattlish following who is filing for mayor. Actually trying to figure out the stances of the various cranks. It’s important work. Who knows what the non-voter paid the same filing fee as everyone else, why not inform the voters a tiny bit about them. In our democracy, well, none of them are as bad as the President.

Also, not to get too meta but “they also seems to be a little green when it comes to Seattle politics (they says Mayor Ed Murray “seems like a really nice guy” which made me snort-laugh)” legit made me snort-laugh.

Oh man. I missed Bus Driver Appreciation Day. But I definitely appreciate my bus drivers. For making my commute possible. For making the city run smoothly. Thanks. I’ll try to live every day with appreciation for bus drivers.

Open Thread: March 20

I’ve recently become enthralled with Frank Blethen’s Twitter feed recently. It’s so ridiculous that if it didn’t have a check mark next to it, I would assume it was a parody account. The man is a newspaper publisher. And while I have a lot of problems with it, the paper is fine for news (when it’s not making up sources).

But holy shit. It looks like he just got a new phone and couldn’t figure out typing on it so he just said, “Siri, tweet something incoherent about a recent Seattle Times article, but make sure the capitalization and spaces are off.” Look, anyone who reads this blog knows I’m a typo generating machine. If the powers that be in this state didn’t insist that we let him set the agenda, maybe I could just ignore it.

Yearly Yeats

Oh, I almost forgot, I do this on St. Patrick’s Day sometimes. Here’s his translation of Swift’s Epitaph:

Swift has sailed into his rest;
Savage indignation there
Cannot lacerate his Breast.
Imitate him if you dare,
World-Besotted Traveler; he
Served human liberty.

Open Thread (Happy St. Pats!)

Man, Mark Miloscia’s worstness was really in evidence yesterday. Shit person with shit bill hating homeless people.

Also, he wants his homeless people map updated daily? That seems like a lot of resources. I assume the state will pick up the tab for this. Along with solving homelessness. No. OK.

Also, also, homelessness is not just a problem in “the ten largest cities in the state” and “the state’s two most populous counties.” I mean the guy works in Olympia. Is he unaware of homeless people there? I think that might be the case. I mean, it’s a terrible plan so don’t implement it anywhere, but if you think it will solve homelessness, why stop at Spokane Valley?

KIRO is gross. Honestly, a map of homeless people. I can’t even. Where in Seattle (or suburbia, but shhhh) do you have to be to not realize Seattle has a serious homelessness problem? I guess in your car.

So the justifications don’t make sense and it’s just cruel.

I mean fuck.

Antisemitic graffiti in the heart of Seattle. In Cap. Hill. I mean fuck. It’s obviously disgusting anywhere. It’s obviously unacceptable anywhere. It’s awful anywhere. But fuck. Seattle, do fucking better.
