To add an exclamation point to Jon’s post below:
an·ar·chist –noun
- a person who advocates or believes in anarchy or anarchism.
- a person who seeks to overturn by violence all constituted forms and institutions of society and government, with no purpose of establishing any other system of order in the place of that destroyed.
- a person who promotes disorder or excites revolt against any established rule, law, or custom.
Far be it for me to suggest that the teabaggers’ violent, anti-federalist rhetoric is in any way anarchistic, but it seems downright silly to attempt to lump anarchists in with us liberals and progressives who admittedly seek an expanded role for government in the economic sphere.
Anarchism is not an ism of the modern left. If anything, it is libertarianism taken to its logical extreme.
Michael spews:
Edward Abbey sometimes advocated anarchism, but he drew a careful distinction between anarchy, the lack of rules, and anarchism, the lack of rulers.
Jon’s last post was probably his best ever.
Zotz spews:
Exactly.
The problem being that if the Tea Klux Klan were somehow to get their glibertarian way, we’d soon have a fascist dictator / thugs running things.
PassionateJus spews:
I’m not so sure about that definition of an anarchist. Anarchy as a philosophy is much more complex than writing an “A” on a wall or being knee-jerk against government.
Traditionally anarchists ( since 1860s) have been on the left side of the spectrum. Their main beef has been against corporations and for the collectivization of labor; they have been more radical than traditional organized labor though. They have never been “libertarian” in nature, at least not in economic matters.
In the US, they have their roots in the poor and immigrant communities during the terrible period of industrialization (think the Italian immigrants Sacco and Vanzentti).
During the Spanish Civil War, anarchists fought along side socialists and communists to preserve the Republican government; fighting against the monarchists, the Catholic Church and the Falangists of Franco. The leftists also fought each other (since they each had different visions for Spain), which led to their defeat by Franco. (It also led one Socialist soldier, a man by the name of George Orwell, to come to despise the totalitarian nature of the communists.)
One of the foremost Anarchist philosophers was Prince Peter Kropotkin of Russia. He’s a good resource for anyone interested in what Anarchism actually is.

Monkeywrench Michael: Am pretty sure Abbey, who did some of his best thinking while waiting for Glacier Park to burn, knew that anarchy is the point at which the wingfuck left and the wingfuck right rise and converge.
rhp6033 spews:
Attempts to correlate the situation in Imperial Russia, and the various revolutionary movements there (including anarchists), with politics in the U.S. (then or now) are inherently misleading. The environments were just too dissimilar to make a valid comparision, a fact which has caused many mistakes among western writers, journalists, and governments.
For example, Russian serfs traditionally looked to the Tsar not as a tyrant, but as their protector from the extremes of the local nobility. It was the Tsar who freed the serfs (before America’s Emancipation Proclamation), although that freedom was far from complete. A story is often told of a revolutionary peasant in the late 1800’s who led a local rebellion against the tyrnical policies of a local noble, and then sent off an appeal to the Tsar for protection. The revolutionaries were sadly dissapointed and dismayed when the Tsars troops arrived to put down the rebellion, not to arrest the local nobleman.
So in this context, note that some western politicians and many political theorists thought that the abdication of the Tsar was a necessary precursor to modernization of Russia’s political system. Instead, the removal of the Tsar only brought more confusion and concern among the peasants who made up the bulk of Russia’s population outside the cities – their protector was gone, they were alone against the abuses of local nobility and the rising power of the Kulak class. That left them open to the promises of the Bolshevicks who promised them protection under the “dictatorate of the Proletariat”, where the first would be last and the last would be first. Of course, it turned out that they had exchanged potential dictatorship by hundreds of local nobles into dictatorship and tyranny by hundreds of thousands of party functionaries as well as Stalin and others.
Anyway, be careful trying to apply Russian history in a western context. It usually is more misleading than inciteful.

The point is, there’s nothing liberal or progressive or big “D” Democratic about ski-masked self-proclaimed anarchists throwing rocks at police and smashing store windows, and there’s nothing in our ideology or rhetoric to give them succor.
Now if the Republican leadership wants to disown the teabaggers the way we condemn and disclaim the anarchists, perhaps the two sides would be on more of an even moral footing.

I know that well. Some of the more radical on the American left did applaud Stalin. [most of those people were far to the left of the Democratic and Republican Parties (which had a liberal New England wing back then)].
Once it became clear what a tyrant Stalin was, most of those people disavowed him. Only a few kooks in America still favored him and they were not in any way affiliated with the Democratic Party.
Orwell was always a socialist. I’ve read plenty of his writings and know that he admired the pure philosophy of the Anarchists and, at first admired the Communists, who did the majority of the fighting for the Republicans. He later became disillusioned with both communism and the Soviet Union.
So what’s your point? What does that have to do with anything today?
I can point out that Orwell remained an ardent socialist his entire life.
I can also point out that there were American conservative leaders who applauded fascism, Franco, Mussolini and even Hitler.
Are you trying to say that Democrats today support Stalin? Because then I can say that Republicans today support Hitler. Both are incredibly stupid statements.

Anarchism is a big part of the history of the international left beginning with Bakunin, one of Marx’s rivals. The problem is, the “left” (even most self styled progressives in the Democratic Party) in the USA would be considered “right” just about anywhere else in the world.
And Goldy, you are wrong. Anarchists have little if anything in common with glibertarians. Glibertarians still have to have a state (monopoly on the use of force) to enforce their private property fetishism.
Most of us tend to confuse ‘anarchist’ with ‘nihilist’. There’s a big difference.

Cyn, I hate to break your heart, but there aren’t a lot of Teepers in Nevada. It’s pretty much the same as it is everywhere else, maybe one in about 500 or so. And seeing that I lived there until just recently, I think I’d know this better than you. The last Teeper rally I personally saw in the Reno/Tahoe/Carson area was quite some time ago, in August. And there wasn’t a single Nevada resident among them. A group of Teepers/cartards picketed in front of Reno’s Federal Building every morning during Hot August Nights (I made them look really foolish several times by engaging them with simple logical arguments, they replied by threatening violence against me, not a smart thing to do with policemen standing right next to us – and the cops told them so). The protestors promptly disappeared when the carfest was over.
Mind you, I moved back to Washington shortly after the New Year, so I wouldn’t know about anything recent. But R/T/C is generally a more conservative area than where the bulk of Nevada’s voters are down in Vegas, but there really isn’t a serious Teeper presence in the area beyond a handful in Fallon and a few in Carson City. People showed up when the TPX buses showed up, but were generally turned off by the Teepers’ message being drowned out by their demands for money from the faithful.
Michael spews:
@65
You forgot Tom Foley.
Yeah, and I pretty much agree with this. And if they throw Reid out a lot of the money and power that the state of Nevada counted on will go out the door with him. Which means there’s more for the senators from the great state of Washington to pick up.
The folks in the 5th CD had the speaker of the house representing them in congress and they tossed him out for a powerless, dim bulb. And then they turned around and whined about being over looked and powerless. Duh. A good chunk of the money and power that went out the door with Tom Foley went into the pockets of Norm Dick’s blue blazer. At the end of the day, politics is a zero sum game.
Broadway Joe spews:

I know you find it hard to believe, but the Tea Party IS NOT just closet Republicans trying to pull a fast one. The majority are independents, many of whom have never been involved in politics before.
You may call them the Party of NO.
I call them the Party of HELL NO!!
Politically Incorrect spews:
“Anarchism is not an ism of the modern left. If anything, it is libertarianism taken to its logical extreme.”
Yep, the “modern left” is an advocate of total and absolute government control of all aspects of life, right down to what we eat and drink, what we read or view on TV, and what we think. The modern left is all about conformity to its world view.

When it comes to lies and anarchy, we all know it’s the libtardo progressives who believe in anarchy.
Exhibit 1
Pictures tell you all about libtardo progressive anarchists.
Exhibit 2
A new Gallup Poll out this morning of 1,033 finds nothing fringe about self-proclaimed Tea Party adherents; they are slightly more likely to be employed, male and definitely more conservative. But otherwise Gallup’s Lydia Saad writes, “their age, educational background, employment status, and race — Tea Partiers are quite representative of the public at large.”
While economic issues like stubbornly high unemployment rates and declining home values cause widespread worries, Winston found top issues among the self-identified Tea Party followers are jobs/the economy and the exploding federal deficit. A whopping 95% told pollsters that Washington “Democrats are taxing, spending and borrowing too much.”
Fully 87% told Gallup they oppose Obama’s healthcare legislation.
Exhibit 3:
But now comes hard facts from multiple sources that put the lie to the liberal stereotype about Tea Partiers. For one thing, the Tea Partiers are almost certainly more in tune with the views of the average American voter than is Obama. Pollster Scott Rasmussen found that 48 percent of his respondents say their views are closer to those of the Tea Party than to Obama. Not surprisingly, far more Republicans than Democrats said that to Rasmussen. Less predictable and more important, 50 percent of the independents identified with Tea Partiers over Obama, while only 38 percent of independents said the president’s views matched their own. It appears the independent center of American politics has shifted decisively to the right as the Tea Party has grown during the past year.
It turns out as well that Tea Partiers aren’t exclusively conservatives or Republicans. The Winston Group has done perhaps the most extensive polling among voters who identify themselves as Tea Partiers, and found that “57 percent of Tea Party members called themselves Republicans, another 28 percent said they were independents, and 13 percent were Democrats. Two-thirds of Tea Party members identify as conservatives but 26 percent say they are moderate and 8 percent described themselves as liberal.” As for those allegedly growing threats of violence by Tea Partiers, no less an authority than Internal Revenue Service Commissioner Douglas Shulman said this week that “no, the threat has not increased.” He added that much of what has been written in the media about such threats “actually is not accurate.” Since the IRS has a unit that tracks such tracks, if anybody would know about growing anti-government violence, surely it would be the head tax man.

@28 Don’t forget that “Leftists” are also supposed to be BOTH dirty hippies and Volvo-driving, Starbucks-swilling, ballet-attending, out-of-touch elites. Oh, and that we drug-overdosing, free-love libertines are in cahoots with the Islamofascists to destroy our country.
I’ve given up on hoping the Right will ever notice how completely schizo their cartoonish portrayals of the Left are.
