To the TV and radio hosts, the columnists, the leaders of White churches, to the parents of White people: You really have to take the lead in teaching our community not to murder Black people. There is a sickness in the White community where we excuse police, where we excuse people who saw an unarmed Black kid with Skittles, where we excuse anyone who says they’re scared of Black people killing them. While each time it’s horrendous, last night, we saw as the toxic racism of our culture that hardly bothers to condemn the murder of Black people came to a head in a Black church in South Carolina.
Yes, sure, there is more to deal with than looking for every excuse after a Black man or woman gets killed by the police or by someone with a gun. Yes, we need to deal more specifically with the toxic aftereffects of slavery, and of Jim Crow, and of redlining. And we need to end the pay gap between Black and White people. We can deal with the school to prison pipeline. We can take Black people seriously when they talk about their own lives. We can cut the micro-aggression bullshit. But we can at least start with condemning it when Black people are killed in this country. We can at least not look for excuses.
All of that has to start with White people. A white person bought Dylann Storm Roof a gun in the first damn place. White people are the ones whose paranoid fantasies give space for this sort of thing. We’re the ones who make excuse after excuse after goddamn excuse.
We’re the ones who after the fact say selling loosies should have been a death sentence. We’re the ones who say being put in the back of a police van should be a death sentence. White people, and especially those with a platform need to confront the deadly racism in our community. As long as we keep making excuses, there will be more.

Of course, when an angry white guy shoots up a church full of mostly elderly black folks, people like Lindsay Graham (and Spittle Puddles) make a point of ignoring the fact that an angry white guy attacked black folks, instead substituting the idea that it was an attack on Christianity. But “christians” have never had any personal problem with mass murder. Jonestown and the Branch Davidians in Waco, TX demonstrated that quite clearly. As did Colfax and Rosewood. The Missions in California during the 1600s and 1700s only demonstrate that mass murder, slavery and the deliberate destruction of entire cultures is merely another method by which Abrahamist religions such as Christianity and Islam are spread around the globe.
Islam is not any all that different from Christianity really. There is some scholarship on the subject of the idea that they are really the same religion, spread out and diluted through the different cultural influences over the last 15 or so centuries and ending up still being nearly identical in basic form, but interpreted through different language structures and cultural iconographies. The Europeans had Martin Luther and John Calvin, the Islamists had Caliph al-Ma’mun and Ibn Rushd. 1500 years is a long time. Especially in the context of language and cultural development.
Form follows function, but function is also the product of the form. I think Frank Herbert saw this and that idea is clearly reflected in his books. Language is merely a form of information exchange, and the details of information that can be transmitted are limited by the languages used to transmit it. The form that religions have taken is apparently just a product of the language used to transmit the tenets of the faith across generations. The invention of writing and the widespread development of common literacy slowed the evolutionary process down somewhat, but also standardized those interpretations in a form that really ceased to develop and change as it became more common for people to read the words for themselves.
Bear in mind, that it was only during the last two centuries that reading the written word became common. Up until about the last 100 years or so, 90% of the human population of the world was almost entirely illiterate.
The Daesh/ISIL/Wahabbist movement in the Middle East is merely more of the same. I’m pretty much convinced that one could take all the basic ideas of Islam and color it under all the symbiology of Christianity, and convince people to follow it. Especially in the southern United States. The basic tenets are pretty much identical. There is no real problem-solving methodology or social purpose to religion except that it is nearly entirely dedicated to managing cultural and linguistic development and extracting wealth for the “chosen few” who convince people that their management style is the correct interpretation, while openly promoting the basic idea that questioning such an individual’s motivations or interpretations is somehow a crime. Calling it “sin” or “blasphemy” or “apostasy” is just another word for that.
It is not a coincidence that Trump spoke the same way this guy Roof spoke before he murdered those people. Trump says out loud what the Republicans are thinking. That’s why they want him to shut up.

We could propose at every level new laws with mandatory outrageous penalties for any criminal activity statistically associated with urban poor. We could hire hundreds of thousands of police, arm them and train them for urban warfare, and deploy them into the poorest urban neighborhoods with the assignment to make arrests in any way they can. We could pass laws to permanently imprison anyone who is a repeat offender caught up in our new system. We could impose unaffordable bails on poor accused forcing them to stay in jail awaiting trial, lose their jobs, and lose their homes. We could systematically reduce the availability of competent legal counsel for poor people accused of crimes. And thus compel the accused to accept plea bargains without the expense of trial. We could privatize the prison systems to avoid the liability of incarcerating huge numbers of urban poor. We could make the prisons compete with each other to keep costs low and find the cheapest way to control the huge incarcerated population of urban poor.
I wonder why we haven’t tried this?

I grew up surrounded by Panthers. I went to one of their day cares. Back before white moms worked (except mine). Back before there was such a thing as day care. They organized breakfast feeds and after school reading programs. And they didnt give a shit that I was white. I was poor. I needed help. That was all they saw.
You do not know who these people are. So shut your fucking mouth. They scared us. Because they knew the law and they knew they were full citizens just like anybody else. And they were not afraid to show it. They fucking INVENTED open carry. And for all that they were targeted for elimination. They cared about the poor.
