Brendan Kiley’s feature article in The Stranger on SPD’s long and expensive undercover sting within Seattle’s alternative community is an incredible piece of work. And it’ll be the first thing I point to the next time SPD complains that they need to hire more officers. There is something of an element in this tale of “agency self-justification”. Once exposed to this kind of work, there has to be a temptation to invent excuses to run around playing James Bond instead of tracking down burglers, directing traffic, and all those other far more mundane things police officers are expected to do.

Many law enforcement people are only in it for the career. But many cops are good guys who only want to do good. They are idealistic in a certain way.

In fact, I run into him maybe once a year on the street and I know not to acknowledge him in public. Hanging out with him and his colleagues a couple times a year, there aren’t a better bunch of guys around.
