The $150,000 the RNC spent on clothing for Sarah Palin is far from the most important issue in this campaign, but I agree with those who suggest that it may be a defining moment. A self-defined “hockey mom” should be shopping at Walmart or Target or Sears, with maybe a pricier outfit or three befitting her suddenly elevated position. But $150,000? Which part of America spends money like that on clothes?
This is a bad story for the McCain/Palin ticket as it highlights the hypocrisy of their faux-populist attacks. But then, with so many bad stories these days, maybe it won’t make a difference.

Another example of a republican double standard. Do as I say, not as I do.
correctnotright spews:
Now if she had spent 150K on hockey gear….yup, she is an “everyday” person who spends more on her clothes than most women make in two years.
Let’s see:
Colin Powell endorses Obama.
Palin is cited for ethics violations.
McCain defends the robocalls tactics he claimed he would never do.
Palin spends 150K on clothes while pretending to be an “average Josephine”.
The only endorsement they have gotten lately comes from al qaeda.
Yup – the republicans and McCain are just hittin’ their stride. They are so incompetent that this could be a landslide loss in the mold of McGovern or Dukakis.
Has there ever been a more incompetent campaign? Do they have anything going for them besides smear tactics?

I agree, and it’s made worse by the fact it went public the same day that the story broke about Palin padding her travel vouchers to get the state to pay for her kids’ luxury-class personal travel. These are the sorts of things that can become the defining moments (and turning points) of a campaign because of the symbolism involved.
YLB spews:
Believe it or not, 150k for outfitting the whole Palin clan is chump change.
That’s just one modest evening ensemble for Cindy McSame.

Politics has been a most profitable endeavor for Sarah Putin. If she keeps at it a couple more years, she should be able to retire in style.

cindy spends some part of her personal income of 4 million a year – who cares – she likes diamonds too, adopts African kids and drives race cars, go cindy
The Palin Albatross is well dressed it seems, and the red outfit with the hip hugging skirt is sexy I might add
Gina or Sophia hips – think about it Goldy and other breeders, you will never have her – I am gay, but sexy is sexy
breeder woman hips is all we will remember

It is socialism which prevents Joe the Plumber’s daughter from carrying a $3,500 Louis Vuitton bag like little 7 year old Piper Palin.

You would have thought, for $150K, Palin’s personal shopper could have found a red, white, and blue scarf with ELEPHANTS on it, instead of DONKEYS.

LOL but when it’s over they tell us they are going to donate the clothes to charity. NOT
Tom Foss spews:
Yes, together with the travel gate it is the perception and hypocrisy that makes it a defining moment.
Oh, and to what charity? Maybe the Palin Foundation, following in the Alaskan footsteps of good ol’ Ted Stevens?
Again, these issues together raise the question- when vetting a VP don’t you review her official travel records? Don’t you turn over every piece of her public and financial records? Not if you are mccain and you have spent a total of two hours with her.
As I said last night, the real issue is Mccain and his judgment. I spent more time and did more research hiring my receptionists than he did choosing her.
westello spews:
It’s interesting. She’s a governor and most women who are that high up (governor, representative, senator) know how to dress and already own the clothes. I don’t agree with the commentators saying that the McCain campaign drove this – I think Palin did. It certain would jive with her wanting to see her kids more and therefore the state can pay for her to take them with her on trips. (Odd that she never took her older son.) She probably thought the GOP owed her a spiffier look.

I’m sure it was one of Srah’s conditions for joining the ticket.
“Well, doggone it, yer just gonna have to git me some duds at Neiman-Marcus, you betcha!”
The funny part is that (hat tip to Joshua Micah Mashall) the SAME GUY:
– Runs McCain’s robocall operation
– Bought Palin’s clothes
– Rents out his WA DC flat super-cheap to Norm Coleman (R-Veneers)
Daddy Love spews:
Yeah, Sarah Palin really loves and takes care of her kids. SO much so that when she was offered the huge, time-consuuming, life-changing job of the vice-presidency, she accepted it AND brought her kids to Ohio for the nomination announcement before she even told them that she had already taken the job. Yes, she flew her pregnant teenaged daughter to Ohio and THEN told her that she was going to trot her out onstage into the teeth of a media frenzy just before doing so.
She’s a heckuva mom, doggone it!

Sarah Plain is:
a. an Alaskan. How many fashionable clothes do you suppose she has??? Where do libs think she should buy her clothes? Target? K-Mart?
b. She is a hot chick from a cold climate. Chick’s clothes cost $$$, lots a dollars. For one thing I ‘spect a good part of this has been spent on buying some undies appropriate for the sled respect she needs when getting cat calls.
c. I am told when she is done, all of these clothes are to be given to a charity that provides quality clothing to impecunious Eskimos from her hubby’s tribe!

Not the part the real “Joe the plumbers” belong to.
Then again…Sak’s and Neiman’s are at least American merchants selling to some sort of mass market. Some of us mere mortals shop there once in a while–not around here, because they don’t have stores in the Seattle area, but the wife and I have on occasion gone to the Sak’s in Portland to buy someone a 50th anniversary gift or something like that. Neiman’s also has the distinction, perhaps because there are a lot of big people in Texas, of offering a lot of stylish threads for women who happen to be larger than a size two.
It would be interesting to have McCain win and see what sort of European haute couture Palin would go inaugural-ball-hopping in. Certainly not interesting enough to have what little worthwhile that’s left of America destroyed in the next four years, mind you.
Daddy Love spews:
Clothes for Gov. Palin? $150,000.
Time machine to go back two months to late August and ask what the hell were Schmidt and Davis thinking when they cooked up this idea and sold it to McCain? Priceless.

Palin is an increasing drag – I hear conversations about how somebody likes McCain but worries about Palin being President. Even republicans are concerned about Palin and the Palin nominatin is driving many of them to Obama. The erratic behavior of McCain ain’t helping either…and neither does the sleazy campaigning or the hypocrisy on robocalling.
rhp6033 spews:
So what do Rove’s minions have in mind for the remainder of the campaign?
Based upon past experience, I would expect some pretty sleezy last-minute tactics which couldn’t be verified as to their source until after the election. Some possibilities:
(a) Some photo-shopped pictures purporting to show Obama using cocaine;
(b) Some “bimbo-eruption” – a lady who met Obama once claiming that he sexually assaulted her;
(c) Circulating rumors that Obama is actually gay, and that it’s widely known in Democratic circles and kept hidden by the leftist mainstream media;
(c) Robo-calling to undecided’s house purporting to be from the Obama campaign, and calling back every time somebody hangs up the phone until the message is finished, with the calls timed to hit just about the time the family is sitting down to dinner.
All of these campaign tactics are identical or very similar to those used by Rove in previous elections at one level or another.
WheresHilary? spews:
Do you think she misses her parkas and mukluks?
She also had no trouble billing Alaska taxpayers for her kids to travel to events and stay in expensive hotels. Sold the state’s plane for a loss so she could use more expensive air travel.
Even billed the state for her to start her husband’s competition in some dumb event like dog racing, sledding, bazooka hunting seals or some other red neck activity.
