The Republican National Committee appears to have spent more than $150,000 to clothe and accessorize vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin and her family since her surprise pick by John McCain in late August.
According to financial disclosure records, the accessorizing began in early September and included bills from Saks Fifth Avenue in St. Louis and New York for a combined $49,425.74.
The records also document a couple of big-time shopping trips to Neiman Marcus in Minneapolis, including one $75,062.63 spree in early September.
There’s always been a certain multi-level marketing flavor to the Republican GOP Party. If a lot of their candidates remind you of infomercial hosts, it’s because basically they are. You too can enjoy (success, wealth, esteem, love, real estate fortune) if you too purchase Brand Republican! See, they’ve lifted up an obscure governor and elevated her to unimaginable heights of material plenty. You could be next!
Not that a lot of the hooting and hollering hard right types at her rallies will care. They’re in love, or more accurately (blood) lust, and such passion cannot be constrained by petty concerns over hypocrisy. So she’s standing there extolling the virtues of the “pro-America” parts of the country wearing clothing that costs more than a hundred El Caminos. So what?
She looks marvelous. If only political candidates didn’t have to speak.
correctnotright spews:
Aye, there’s the rub – for in the act of speaking all mortal bonds may break – and then we hear how ill-informed and shallow Palin really is….

Obscene. Just obscene.
Mr. Cynical spews:
You KLOWNS have a bit of a point.
Michelle Obama looks more like she shops at Goodwill….and can only find clothes 3 sizes too small.

I know, almost as obscene as a former Democratic candidate who based his campaign on alleviating poverty living a 28,000-square-foot, $5.3 million mansion set on 102 acres which includes an indoor basketball court, an indoor pool and a handball court. Oh, and he gets $1,250 haircuts, and cheated on his wife while she was battling cancer.
PS, John, your posts are boring.

Maybe it’s just me, but if a woman is built well, I don’t mind her wearing clothing 3 sizes too small. This is totally irrelevant, but I think Michelle Obama is far more attractive than Sarah Putin. If I had a date with Sarah, I’d leave during dinner to go to the bathroom and not return.

Hmmm. I remember when Mr. Cynical said “Rossi will be like Palin”.
The sense of entitlement to huge shopping trips to clothes, cars, interior decorating – all the trappings of royalty.
Roger Rabbit spews:
By coincidence, the news stories about Palin’s $150K wardrobe and her bilking the Alaska treasury for her kids’ personal travel broke on the same day.
The juxtaposition of these incidents against a backdrop of national economic pain create the worst possible symbolism for the McCain campaign. This could blow up his campaign — and blow the election wide open.
I won’t be surprised if a massive defection of moderate voters from the McCain camp occurs in the next few days. Even before this happened, some polls suggested McCain was entering the home stretch with Goldwater-like numbers.
rla spews:
It’s pretty sad to watch videos of some of those McCain/Palin rallies. You see people showing up dressed in their best and you can tell some of them are struggling. I wonder how they will feel about that $20 they sent in if they ever get to see this report. Instead of going for 1/20th of a new pair of boots for the first dude, it could have bought the kids some new shoes….
I’ve always wondered how the republicans can get people to vote against their economic interests in the name of something that doesn’t even have anything to do with them. Even after reading “What’s the Matter With Kansas” I still am a little puzzled. Like gay marriage, abortion and terrorism have much to do with any place in Oklahoma…

She was not even staying at the Waldorf. We regret the mistake, and our former source is going to regret it, too. Bread and water would be too good for such disinformation.”

GOPer’s ‘Anti-American’ Slur Backfires
Batshit-crazy rightwing Minnesota Rep. Michelle Bachmann should have kept her stupid mouth shut. Her slam against Obama’s “anti-American views” is going to cost her her job and increase the Democratic House majority by another seat.
“Bachmann’s comment uncorked a gusher of donations to her opponent, transforming a race she had been favored to win into one more worry spot for Republicans.
“Democrat Elwyn Tinklenberg said his campaign brought in $810,000 in less than 72 hours, an amount he could only have imagined before Bachmann’s remarks. It took the former state transportation commissioner a year to raise $1 million before that, and Bachmann started the campaign’s critical final month with almost four times as much cash as he had.
“Before Friday’s ‘Hardball’ aired, Bachmann was favored to win a second term despite being one of Minnesota’s most polarizing political figures. … National Democrats, sensing opportunity, announced Monday they would pour $1 million into TV ads in the district ….
“The comments also prompted Republican Aubrey Immelman, who lost to Bachmann in the primary, to say he would wage a write-in campaign.”

You gotta love this zapporo critter. John McCain doesn’t have to actually prove that he’s paying someone to enter every $5 check from the Aunt Tilly’s of America, despite the fact that doing so would wipe out most of those small donations. Zapporo will simply take John McCain’s word on that one.
But this Obama guy, Zapporo doesn’t trust Obama. Nope. Can’t do that. Obama’s too shady a character for zapporo to let him get by with merely complying with campaign finance laws.
Gotta love the double standard there.
By the way, wasn’t zapporo the one who made some snide comment about the Waldorf-Astoria yesterday? That was almost as good as delbert and the New Mexico GOP’s fraudulent claims about voter fraud.
Damn, but these Republicans sure have a hard time getting their facts straight.

No, I’m not a big fan of $150K of dresses and Dior. But how important is that when $150 million arrives in a single month in small unmarked bills with 0 accountability?
That my friend is a much larger ethical dilemma.
You cannot possibly be serious about “doing so would wipe out most of those small donations”? That small feat is accomplished millions of times each day. Ever heard of ATMs? electronic fund transfers? How about Paypal?

As for the $150m in donations. In America, in the America that I live in, when one is accused of wrongdoing it is the accuser who must prove the wrongdoing. Throwing out what ifs does not qualify as proof. Bring us receipts, bring us IP addresses, bring us bank account numbers…….
I know, it was all anonymous so there has to be a crime. Never mind that in polls Obama is kicking your boy’s ass. You know, a poll where money has nothing to do with it, no one buys polls, dipwad.

Looks like folks have pointed out your factual faux pas WRT Michelle Obama and the Waldorf-Astoria, so let’s deal with this:
You cannot possibly be serious about “doing so would wipe out most of those small donations”?
Quite serious. You see, squirt, there’s still a large portion of the population that writes checks. And your suspension of disbelief regarding McCain’s contribution disclosures requires us to also believe that the McCain campaign is paying someone to enter all of those checks into their database regardless of the size of the check.
Don Joe spews:

rhp6033 spews:
Actually, the figure being reported to today is in excess of $177,000 being spent by the Republicans on Sarah Palin’s dress, hair, and grooming – apparantly all during the month of September. I wonder what the October numbers will reveal.
The campaign is trying damage control by claiming that they “always intended” to donate the clothes to some charitable purpose after the campaign. I had to laugh at that one – I imagined some homeless lady wearing a red designer suit dress worth thousands of dollars which had been donated to Goodwill. But I guess they mean that they will auction her clothes and donate the proceeds to charity – which I’m sure was never Palin’s expectations at the time.
Aside from the rather impressive expenditure on someone who claimed the be a “regular gal”, one of the things which brings this into focus is that it was paid from funds of either the McCain campaign or the GOP party funds. Use of such funds for “personal exependitures” is illegal. When Edwards was so roundly criticized for having a couple of haircuts for around $400, it was because the campain mistakenly paid the bill, and Edwards had to reimburse the campaign. I haven’t heard Sarah Palin yet say that she intended to reimburse the campaign for her dresses.
Of course, I’m sure she didn’t think of this issue at all. Her short time as a weathergal, and as a beauty contestant, probably had her thinking that any “investment in her image” was an appropriate expense to be paid by whoever else benefited (contest sponsors, TV station, whatever). Her billing the state for personal travel by her children indicates a similar thought process. She probably didn’t think at all about whether she should be the one paying for it.
Mr. Cynical spews:
rhp–
My guess is a lot of this stuff will be auctioned off…however, I think the Republican Party needs to keep the proceeds.
Obama has promised his BIG GOVERNMENT will be the source of future charity…so let him do it. Why should we??
