Former Washington State Insurance Commissioner Deborah Senn is appearing on stage this weekend at the Capitol Hill Arts Center, performing her new one-woman play “Until the Last Dog Dies.” The play chronicles her 2004 run for state Attorney General, and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s secret, $1.5 million ad campaign to kill it.
This is the second play Senn has written since leaving office, and while it may seem odd to most folk for a former politician to suddenly pursue a career in theater, it doesn’t to me. Senn was a theater major in college, only to be sidetracked by the political activism of the time. I myself come from a theater background, and have always considered my own foray into politics as at least part performance art.
Tickets are $20 and a can be purchased here, but act fast because it only runs through June 1.
Just wondering if anyone else is having trouble commenting at Whackynation – I wonder if I was banned over there because they could not take the heat?

I would find it particularly intersting if I am banned from comments – especially after deconstructing Mark Gardner and Lou in their “no such thing as global warming” fantasies or their “DDT is great stuff” delusions.

I supported Senn, but I didn’t think she had a chance. She was unable to get a message out that resonated with the voters. I’m shocked to find out she is a playwright and that she was a theater major – maybe use some of those skills next time Deborah. (I’m not being sarcastic)
I have a love-hate relationship with CHAC, I have to tell you. Don’t be surprised if her show is interrupted by loud music (not from the bar or nightclub downstairs – we don’t start with the noise until after 10 pm – but from one of the other spaces being used for ‘theater.’
Goldy, you should beg our best elected official of the last 25 years, Deborah Senn, to blog for HA.

I saw her give a speech once and was very impressed with her skills.
I thought that if a lower level pol. like this could perform so well, the ones at the top must be phenomenal. I saw Howard Dean speak as well. When the crowd roared their approval after his rousing speech, he gave his famous yell. It could not be heard above the din of the crowd and it became so very clear the dirty little PR trick that a fellow Democrat had played upon him.
One could have only hoped that Kerry’s elbows would have been half as sharp against a Republican opponent. Alas and sadly (Piperisms, I know)’twas but a fleeting shadow of the RAVEN of DEATH that stalked poor John ’til he had quite given up when Ohio trickery was nigh!

What a friggin’ flake.
That US Chamber campaign gave Senn all the free media she needed to make it through the primary…which was probably low-life slimeball Rob McKenna’s goal from the get-go.
It didn’t help that knee-jerk reactionary Stranger clowns did what they could to torpedo Mark Sidran, who wasn’t Naderesque enough for them.
I watched Senn announce the official kick-off to her Attorney General campaign at a big forum in downtown Seattle. And this is what she said, in broken, quivering english:
“….and that is why I have decided to run for the office of State Insurance Commissioner.”
You could hear a pin drop after that doozy. The rest of the speech was equally unremarkable.
I forget whether Senn even corrected herself or not, but it didn’t matter. She was toast out of the gate. The State Republicans could not have chosen a better Democratic opponent had they been given the chance.

Deborah Senn never should have run for Attorney General. I don’t give a rat’s ass if she can script a play. She has precious little experience as a practicing lawyer (though more than Rob McKenna), and ran for the position only because of political ambition. I’ve met her many times, sometimes more than once in the same day. Democrats have far better reserves than her. For instance, John Ladenburg (sp?) is running for Attorney General against McKenna. Ladenburg is a real lawyer, who has litigated cases, and has some understanding of the legal system. McKenna, like Senn, is a purely political animal. His current position is nothing more than, from his perspective, a step toward a higher political position.

I saw the play and my first reaction walking out of the theater was what a bitter person Deborah Senn has become. It was permeated with ugliness from start to finish. Thinking about it for a few days and re-reading some of her press over the years, though, Deborah got genuinely swift-boated and I applaud her catharsis in setting out her thoughts. But a little more reflection on the things she didn’t get right would have enhanced her production. Hope she comes to that one day.
