McCain: “I am an illiterate”

Yet another McCain Moment™. Back before Super Tuesday, Yahoo News asked each of the Republican nominees what kind of computer they used, Mac or PC. Huckabee… PC. Paul… PC. Romney… PC (though in his typical all things to all people style, he said that his sons swear by their Macs, so he’ll “probably convert.”) And McCain…?

“Neither. I am an illiterate who has to rely on my wife for all of the assistance I can get.”

I guess that’s one advantage to marrying a woman 18 years your junior. But see what I mean when I say that McCain is too old to be president?

UPDATE:
My apologies to Sen. McCain; looks like he does know how to use a computer. In fact, it looks like he’s just written his very first blog post.

    I dislike him as the Stupid party candidate for his stance on the issues. I would like to see McCain-Feingold repealed, his stance on immigration is wrong, he’s a bit too authoritarian for my taste, and yet he’s still far more qualified than either of the two lightweights the Evil party has put forth for the office combined.

    Yipe! Another old computer geek. I never had a TRS-80, but from what I know of them, they were surprisingly good for the money.

    Ah, memories of my ill-spent youth. Back when 48K was a lot of memory and serious computer users still used green screens, because color was for wimps.

    When I finally got my first PC clone, I got a 30 Meg Seagate drive. I had no idea what I’d do with 30 megabytes of storage, but along with an 8 MHz V20 chip, it gave me bragging rights.

    Ok, enough geekspeak.

    I’m a bit surprised at Senator McCain. By the time he left the Navy in 1981, computers were popping up everywhere. Yes, he was a Captain, and had Sailors working for him to operate them, but still, in 1981, I remember that my CO had a terminal in his office, and by 1981, computers were all through the aviation Navy. I was with VA-196 at Whidbey, getting ready to transfer to the Admiral’s staff at Commander, Medium Attack Tactical Electronic Warfare Wing, U.S. Pacific Fleet.

    (Wow, that whole thing still rattles off the fingertips. COMMATVAQWINGPAC – pronounced “com-mat-vak-wing-pac” or as we used to call it “Vacuum-Pac”.)

    He may have decided that since he was getting out, he didn’t need to keep up, but that really doesn’t speak well of him. We used to call those folks “ROAD Scholars”.

    ROAD = Retired On Active Duty.

    For McCain to make such a statement is rather shocking in the context of his having supposedly one of the Senate’s go-to people on technology issues. Maybe early on they figured that one pilot from Arizona is like another i. e. Barry Goldwater. But Cheese Whiz, folks…this guy has had tremendous influence on telecommunications policy,and intellectual property law, among other things. At least he didn’t start referring to a “series of tubes”.
