Nothing else at all happened yesterday as the world stopped and a smallish-midsized rural state without many delegates apportioned them to this summer’s nominating conventions for the two major parties’ 2008 presidential candidates.
The final tally:
Democrats
Obama 38%
Edwards 30%
Clinton 29%
Richardson 2%
Biden 1%
Others 0%
Republicans
Huckabee 34%
Romney 25%
Thompson 13%
McCain 13%
Paul 10%
Guiliani 3%
Others 0%
(A few obvious notes: on the Dem side, Richardson, Biden, and Dodd all ran hard in Iowa, and have squat to show for it — so much for a fourth “dark horse” being propelled into the race. Dodd and Biden, in fact, dropped out of the race late last night. Among the top three, in the larger scheme of things Obama’s extra delegates over Clinton and Edwards are meaningless, and he is from one state over; this settled nothing.
The Dem caucuses attracted far more Iowans than the Republican side; of the latter, one poll showed 60% identified themselves as Christian evangelicals, which tells you all you need to know about the roots of Huckabee’s rise. Even though he didn’t campaign much there, Guiliani’s showing, for a candidate leading the pack in national polling most of the year, is shocking. And when will people start taking Ron Paul seriously? Exhibit A: This unbylined, condescending Seattle Times article, which fails to mention — as did the entire Times web site Iowa coverage — that Paul pulled 10%, only three percent behind McCain & Thompson, and instead seems shocked that Paul intends to “continue his presidential campaign into New Hampshire and other states.”)
Of course, because this is the first actual contest that counts for anything, after a full year of wall-to-wall polling and breathless analysis of candidates’ haircuts, church attendance, and tipping habits, this morning the Iowa caucuses are getting the sort of news treatment generally reserved for (other) great natural disasters. Savvy reporters are also already filing their what-did-it-all-mean stories and launching your next round of blanket coverage and pointless speculation, hosted for the next five days by New Hampshire.
Welcome to election 2008. It’s going to be like this, in greater and lesser amounts, for another 306 days.
While the earth did, in fact, stop on its axis yesterday, and all six billion of its people held their collective breaths, a few miscreants did generate other news this morning. Our Friendly Mr. Dictator, Pervez Musharraf, made the news (and doubtless lots of new friends) by essentially blaming Benazir Bhutto for her own death. And Rep. Jane Harman released a declassified letter showing that contrary to CIA public statements, the CIA planned to destroy their torture interrogation tapes two full years before they actually did so. Oh, and in a classic bury-outrageous-news-on-a-day-when-it-won’t-be-noticed move,
After a two-year investigation into the killings of up to 24 civilians in Haditha, Iraq, the Marine Corps has decided that none of the Marines involved in the incident will be charged with murder.
Betcha Iraqis (who consider this case right up there with Abu Ghraib among American outrages) notice anyway. Way to win hearts and minds.
Locally, the P-I gives us “Leaky leaf blower leaves slippery slick on Green Lake path,” the sort of alliterative headline about a trivial story you’d expect in, say, the local Forks paper (no disrespect to Forks). Over at the Times, the breaking local scoop is even better: “A lone coyote was spotted roaming the south parking lot of Discovery Park Wednesday morning.”
(Someone should tell our friends in Bothell that coyotes have been sighted all over town for two full years now. For example, Danny Westneat wrote a column about it six months ago in the, um, Seattle Times. Which in turn followed this story from October 2006 in the, um, Seattle Times. And so on.)
And to add to the local news mix, local TV last night gave us graphic images of our treacherous area highways, and their tragic victims (and near-victims), here, here, and here.
Maybe the Iowa coverage isn’t so bad after all.

Obama’s success last night is not the end of the tail. It did, however, effecively narrow the race to Gore (who has 35 minutes left to decide to run),Obama (who ran as an American, not an an Afro-american), Edwards who seems to be corss breeding Huey Long and Fiorello Laguardia, and the incumbent HRC.
I am NOT trying to be funny here. These definitions are very hard t change once they are in place.
Another change last night has to do with testing the verious organizational approaches. IMO, Axelrod has discovered a new coalition of that may rival roosevelt. The believers. Last night BHO and HRC essentially ties in the party regular vote. BUT BHO won crossovers, Polls show him aa the favorite second candidate of many Repubs! I think the reasons are clear .. on faith issues he comes across as sincere (as does Huckaby). Ths means the faithfuk TRUST him on issues like the war, taxes, etc where the Rvians have misused them. This is a huge part of the Reag to Rove era Republican vote,
Where next? HRC’s big advantage is Bill and I se eonkly two possible winning strategies: 1. A breakup where she shows her gones b y putting him down publicly proving her manhood or 2. an embrace where come sout and says they area team and this is a vote for back to the 90s. I would bet on #2 and that could win idf she emerges as soimething mnore than his sidekick.
Gore is the Joker. He probably can not enter the the race, but he could decide it.
Edwards, he has a good theme but he scares me. For all the charges that Romney is the robot that eat the Bush agenda, Edwards is the trial lawyer who has taken on a case, He reminds me of the attorneys who won for OJ, He ia brilinat argument presnting Redford of a man. The problem he faces is $$$$. If he loses in NH (I hope), frore on the campaign will be a media campaign. BHO has unimaginable source of money .. all I need to do is push the button on my cell phone .. right HERE and BHO gets another $25! Formodable!
HRC has lots of $$ too. We have not yet seen a “killer ad” int is campaign but I have too much respect for those people not to imgine some sort of 2 minute affair, perhaps using Andy Young or Bill gates or ?? as an endorser.
The ultimate test is the SJ sensitometer. My sense of th8insg is that BHO has a 60% of winning, HRC has 25 and John has 15. All that could change if:
Gore endorses BHO
el Qaida bombs the Bellevue Mall
Bush recognizes Cuba
BHO’s membership card in the Aetheists’ Association is made public
But I have a dream …..

At least we’re spared triple-chinned Chris Dodd and his shock of white hair. If the field of straw atop his head couldn’t attract the support of Iowa farmers, then he needs to go back to Connecticut where he belongs.
How soon before HRC really goes negative? And engages in wholesale name calling?
Hmmm…maybe some of the HA Happy Hooligans – good at name calling as they most certainly are – will get tapped on the shoulder to spew their special brand of venom on behalf of the Clintons? Who will then toss them under a bus the instant they cease being of use to them?
And bringing this strategy home, how will The Darcy change her campaign rhetoric now that her MoveOn.org/Daily Kus/Netroots-beholden pitch wears even thinner than it is now given the tone de jour of soft and centrist?
Does this mean Goldy will have to clean up his act, quite cussing, and turn up the heat in his house to make it warm and inviting?

Good Morning JSA on Beacon Hill.
You asked about Huckabee.
Here is my take and Clueless Gooberfool find this on a “wing-nut” web site.
1) He is an evangelical in name only. You don’t attack others in your party who may have differing Christian views and then say I am not attacking them (then “shows” the video he made – but “doesn’t show” it) and then tell the New Hampshire voters negative ads are not good and they really don’t work.
2) His liberal policies are scary. He is only pro-life and pro-heterosexual marriage. Otherwise there are many liberal qualities you guys can attack him on. In fact last night Donna Brazile was salivating on a Huckabee nomination. Come on, anyone with half-a-brain tied behind their back can read Donna’s face.
3) He also has no real platform. He will be easy pickings for your side if he wins the nomination.
So I can understand your glee JSA. I also can understand your reasoning. At least you make sense, unlike Clueless Gooberfool.
Many of these guys remind me of Robert Dole in 1996. Just nothing there to cheer about. If someone would put a fire under Fred Thompson’s ass.

It’s the Soros version of heads I win, tails you lose. Elections are supposed to be about choice. When the candidates have the same positions on almost everything, differing only in the label they wear, why bother.
I cannot predict the winner but I can predict that the ’08 election will have the lowest turn-out ever.
AS far as Iraq, that is a done deal. They have a government chosen by the citizen. A government that got more done and gets along better then the US government. AQ has declared they are pulling out, it looks like the next theater will be in Pakistan. What the left has not figured out is that Iraq is a theater in a war, NOT a stand alone war. US troops will be in Iraq for at least the rest of this century, just as they are in Japan and Germany 60 years after invading those countries. If the Left wants to bring the troops home, Germany is the logical place to start.

I’ve watched the three speeches of the Dem frontrunners on caucus night.
Obama – man! Pumped, the crowd totally behind him. Every note stoked the crowd. However some notes rang hollow to me – more sloganeering than anything real. But no doubt about it, this guy has the mojo.
Edwards – unfortunately disappointing. It started out good but turned angry. It silenced the crowd. Everything he said was true – a series of awful hard luck stories but he’s got to connect with people on an inspirational level if he wants them to carry him over the goal line. John, don’t depress people, inspire them. Talk about your plan to turn this around!
Clinton – started out good and fizzled out at the end. She was smiling and upbeat at the beginning but obviously tired. She’s not a good public speaker but she can improve. All the numbers and the organization are in her favor after Iowa.
Of the three, Obama is the most ON MESSAGE but he has to make it more real, less superstar.
I want JE to win but it’ll be a miracle if he can turn it around in five days against Obama’s momentum or Hillary’s machine.

Particle Man spews:
To write off the Iowa results as meaningless is just plain ignorant.
I don’t think the results say much about Edwards other than that he is well liked and has a shot. Clinton though would be wise to retool her entire campaign. Running on experience just will not get the job done as is indicated by 71% casting support for other candidates regardless of how much she spent, her edge in experience and her star appeal.
A look at recent history tells us why the experience argument fails to connect. This nation has twice elected a dipshit as its president. Bush had never traveled outside the country except to Mexico, never read the papers and could not put two words together (he is up to five now). So for eight years our nation has lived with a dote who fails to listen to his people, disrespects the nations of this world, has us mired in Iraq, is racking up debt and sinking the economy.
When you contrast this with Obama, who may lack the depth of experience Clinton touts, and you listen to his message of hope, recall his vote on the war and hear his theme of unifying the nation, the experience attack just falls flat.

Direct from GMA –
ROBIN ROBERTS: Want to know about that bounce, perhaps, going to New Hampshire. In his victory speech, GOP winner Mike Huckabee said it is not– politics is not just about raising money, it’s about raising people’s hopes and dreams, which apparently is what he did in Iowa where he beat Mitt Romney by a solid nine percentage points. Recently, actually just moments ago, I had a chance to speak with Mike Huckabee who had just arrived in Manchester. Governor Huckabee, you said before the caucuses in Iowa that if you looked up the word underdog in the dictionary that people would see a picture of you. Well, this morning, next to your picture are the words Republican front-runner. How did that happen?
MIKE HUCKABEE: Well, it’s an amazing journey. And I think it started because the people of not just Iowa but the country are looking for real change. I think when they say change, they want somebody who embodies who America really believes. And that is, that this is still a place of hope and optimism. It’s a place where we don’t just focus on what is wrong, but what could be right. I talked about the problems, but I talked about how we can fix them. And I think the background that I have as governor is perhaps what connected with people. There, you build roads. You fix schools. You make health care better, because that’s your job every day.
ROBERTS: Looking forward to New Hampshire where you are this morning, and as we’ve heard that the two front-runners there are McCain and Romney and that you are some 20 points behind. So how do you keep the momentum going?
HUCKABEE: Well, the momentum starts today. We’re coming out of Iowa like, you know, a house afire and I think that’s a good thing for us. Now, do we catch up to the first place? I don’t know. That might be a little much in five days. But I think we’re going to do well enough here. We certainly are still going to be on our feet. And we go to South Carolina. We’re in first position there, strongly. And then we go on to Florida. We’re running first in the polls there. I think people who thought of our campaign as sort of a one-state wonder may be — haven’t really been really watching carefully what’s going on in these other states. So, we’re pretty pumped about the next few weeks.
ROBERTS: In Iowa, the majority, over half, of the Republican caucus goers, fundamentalist Christians. And people saw, there, in your offices in Iowa, right before the caucuses, people praying there in your, in your office. But how do you get that message to translate nationwide? Because that’s not the situation in New Hampshire and other places across the country.
HUCKABEE: My coalition wasn’t about just evangelicals. It was people who supported the fair tax, which is, really, a really total overhaul of our current tax system which, by the way, 80 percent of American people think we need an overhaul. And I think if they understand the fair tax, many of that 80 percent would be with us. There are a lot of people for whom the Second Amendment is an important issue. Others who are pro-life, who may not necessarily be religious about it. And then are people who just believe we need a different tone of politics.
ROBERTS: But, however, you base continues to be evangelicals. And today the National Academy of Sciences has a new book out which says that evolution, overwhelming evidence of evolution, and that creationism has no place in the classroom. Do you agree with that, that creationism should be kept out of our classrooms?
HUCKABEE: In ten and a half years as a governor, never touched it. It’s not an issue for our president. It wasn’t even an issue for me as a governor. And governors do deal with education, but not the curriculum. It’s about making sure that we have a broad enough curriculum. My focus has not been on issues like that, it’s been on music and as and education. What I really fought hard for was that every student have an access to the creative side of education so every student would be able to develop both the right and left sides of the brain.
ROBERTS: Should creationism be banned from the classroom. Yes or no?
HUCKABEE: Banned? Well, banning sounds like sort of a censorship. I don’t think most people agree with censorship. Should we teach it as a doctrine? Of course not. Should we teach that some people believe it, some don’t? I think that’s academic freedom.
ROBERTS: Governor Mike Huckabee, thank you very much for getting up and joining us this morning. We certainly do appreciate it and we’ll look forward to you in New Hampshire. Thank you, sir.

Now we come to Hilary loving Chris Matthews:
Lexis-Nexis of MSNBC provides:
CHRIS MATTHEWS: If Obama wins tonight and according to the polls he’s in good shape. Gene, you start. If he wins tonight that’s the shot heard ‘round the world. This is Lexington and Concord with the target being not King George but President George this time.
MATTHEWS: If Obama wins this caucus it will be the biggest political story in maybe 20 or 30 years our of this country. It’ll be a story as certainly as big as, as Ronald Reagan defeating Jimmy Carter. It will be a story about a change in political direction for the country. A shot heard ‘round the world, if you will. Barack Obama, son of Kenya, as well as America, with Kenya in turmoil right now. To be a son of that country, to be over here as a candidate for President and to win the Iowa caucuses is a change of American history. There’s no doubt about it. And there’s no way to read it except as a rebuke to President Bush. This is seen in the world as a man who represents a kind of a Third World view of the thing, of issues like Iraq. He looks at it as a member of the world community not just as an American. Not a, “Our way or the highway,” sort of person at all. Very much a member of the world community. And I think the world will be very happy to hear this.
MATTHEWS: Yes, yes! I want to say it loudly! I want to say it loudly!
Aren’t these libs on MSNBC great? I love how they put forth political spin when their commentary is vacuous at best. They provide so much fun for Ol’ Puddy!

correctnotright spews:
Huckabee is a fool:
He thinks the earth is 6,000 years old and people and dinosaurs played together. I hope the fool republicans nominate him.
The two big stories out of Iowa were the number of Democrats who came out – Republicans may soon be a third party or weak sister “alternative”. All of the far right trolls on this blog make the case well for Republicans fading away into right wing imagination land. Bush has managed to make Republicans wrong on almost every issue:
Corruption
Ineptness
the deficit
torture
Iraq war
(lack of) Justice department
Pandering to corporations
Lack of government oversight (poisons in our imports)
Free trade (giving away our jobs for shoddy imports with no environemntal reg’s)
(lack of) Health care
Unregulated loan industry
YLB spews:
Republicans may soon be a third party or weak sister “alternative”.
I wish this were so. Our system of electing political leaders, a winner takes all system only allows for two political parties.
The money party and the people’s party.
If the name “Republican” turns people’s stomachs as it should then the name will change.
But the party will remain the same.
There is some evidence that “Republican” is having the stomach-turning effect. In 2006, incumbent congressmen were scrubbing “Republican” from their websites as fast as they could.
I feel a little sick now myself.
correctnotright spews:
Here is a fun little task:
count the number of times Republican candidates mention the Republican president and agree with him.
They act as if bush (the current republican president in office) doesn’t exist. Yet they parrot his failed policies and most of their platforms are similar.
I just hope Huckabee is nominated – the guy has more skeletons in his closet than all the SAW movies put together.
Who is left for the republicans?
Romney?: he couldn’t even buy Iowa – how will he ever win nationally?
McCain: I would love to see him forget to answer debate questions. He needs to change his meds to stay awake.
Thompson: he just needs to stay awake – and maybe catch up on foreign affairs, since the cold war ended.
Guliani: Fading fast due to good character judgement and fast spending while mayor.
Paul: Would win the election if it were held on 08 (that is, 1808). His platform would work well then – no civil rights acts, highway systems, computers or telephones.

Careful, Rabbit, I have a son who’s a Marine, and he’s proud both of the Corps and the work he does in it. And I’m proud of him.
Unless you were there and had access to all the evidence or were involved completely in the investigation of Haditha, who are you, a foul-mouthed admittedly biased and obviously delusional cheap-seat Monday morning quarterback, to judge?
As an officer of the court, where’s your allegiance to “innocent until proven guilty?” And as a veteran, where’s your understanding of combat and the complexities of fighting an insurgency?
From what I see, you’re only interested in scoring cheap political points without bothering to examine all the evidence first hand. But that’s your SOP, isn’t it?
Marines are still subject to criminal prosecution for the actions at Haditha. Why don’t you let the process take its course, let the UCMJ operate as intended, before making yourself look stupid?
Or is asking you to not look stupid akin to asking water to run up hill?

BILL SCHNEIDER: They’re different. The Democrats are moderate. Only about 16 percent of them call themselves “very liberal.” There’s a cliche that only liberal Democrats and conservative Republicans show up. That’s half true. Republicans are very conservative. Almost half of them say they are “very conservative.” But Democrats are pretty moderate voters.

On the Dems side, don’t left the closeness of the numbers at the end fool you. In Iowa, the number of votes are not disclosed, just the number of deligates. In terms of people voting it was an absolute ASS KICKING.
I’ve flew to Iowa from Seattle last week to volunteer in the Obama office here in Iowa City. (Where I am still here for another day as I help break down the office.)
I had visibility to the numbers of all of Johnson County & Iowa City and heard of similar results from across Iowa. In the precinct I was observing in, IIRC, viability was set at 76 votes. (15% of totsl). I think Edwards was just above that point at maybe 82 votes. No other candidate was viable other than Obama. Yes, Hillary was 10 votes *below* viability!!
The turnout for Obama was so great, that the supporters of other candidates mostly crossed to JE & HRC because of the numbers turning out for Obama were so high. (Or perhaps it was just too crowded in the rooms where the Obama people were meeting.)

I also saw MH, and MR give their speeches.
Like HRC and JE, MR was faking enthusiasm and energy. His words were hollow and he didn’t seem connected to the audience. MH however gave what I thouhgt was a fantastic speech. For many of the same reasons that I mentioned about BO. MH was connected, had an ease and truthfullness to his words and you could feel the sincerity of his remarks.
