This hit piece, paid for by the BIAW of Whatcom County, is hilarious. The BIAW is supporting some pretty right wing candidates and instead of running ads about how great their candidates are, they’re trying to smear the other side.
Voters don’t know what Progressive Majority is or what they do. Most of all, they don’t care. Voters do care about sustainable development, protecting neighborhoods, and protecting the water quality of Lake Whatcom. Unfortunately, all three of the BIAW’s candidate’s don’t do very well on any of these points.
What’s more, Progressive Majority isn’t even organizing the bus campaign. Who is? The Washington Bus, an organization that gets young people who are left-of-center involved in politics in a fun way. Here’s what they look like:
and this:
A bunch of hippies? I think not. Those kids look like they’re having fun getting involved in politics.
Goldy wrote about this recently:
Why the fearful reaction to progressive organizers, and the sudden public embrace of non-partisan ideals? Because in a region where Republicanism has been discredited perhaps more thoroughly than anywhere else in the nation, these nominally non-partisan races are the only chance most Republicans have of ever holding public office.
Non-partisanship has become the last refuge of political losers.
Speaking of losers, I can’t wait to see how much more money the BIAW will flush down the drain on crap ads like this one.
Poster Child spews:
No way, that green seventies-era ten-speed is pure hippie. Trust me on that.
Giffy spews:
Well too be fair, a couple of them do look kind of hippish. ;)
But yah what a stupid mailer. Politics aside, it just doesn’t mean anything to anybody. Its not like the people they doorbell see the fucking bus or even probably know how they got there. Door belling scripts don;t generally focus on ones choice of transportation.

sheesh……..the far left really does have alot in common with terrorists after all…who knew?

Looking at the add further, the snarling dog is the best part. I love how the kid actually looks pretty nice and friendly, whilst the voters appear angry and mean. I’m also a little unclear why Michael Moore and Keanu Reaves make an appearance.
Wait, no the banana peel is better then the dog.
Giffy spews:
Or why the biggest word in the mailer is CHARTER. Ohhhh scary charter buses.

You’re judged by the company you keep, and when you keep company with a gaggle of giggly faced kids who look as though they’ve got about three days of life-experience between them, I’d say that’s a fair issue.
Isn’t that what religious bigot, David Della is doing right now? Or some of the junk I’m getting in my mailbox accussing port commission candidates of being…shudder…closet REPUBLLICANS?

Odd thing is that the swollen and blackened eye is my right one. Still, the good thing is that, given my pretty severe astigmatism, which I’ve had causing me to wear strong glasses since 1st grade, my good eye is my left eye through which I see things just right!
Thank you for your concern…seriously.

Show me one comment in favor of the incumbent in that race that I have posted and I will then contribute money.
As I’ve said earlier, no law says you have to vote for either candidate in a race. If you want a real protest vote, write in a name.
Besides, I’m in the 1st Councilmanic District where I suffer under a Fergucurson. At least I no longer suffer under Carolyn “Chatty Cathy” Edmonds who never said a public word until after Ron Sims pulled the string at the back of her neck.

Let’s look at some of your company, Piper:
1.) Racist homophobes like David Duke.
2.) Various “Christianists” who overtly seek a theocracy (R.J. Rushdoony).
3.) Unrepentant Confederate sympathizers and racists (Trent Lott).
4.) Wingnut warmongers like Normie Podhoretz, Pauli Wolfowitz, Charlie (not cong) Krauthammer, and Billy (not meth) Kristol.
5.) Cult leaders (like the dearly departed Ayn Rand).
Yes, the list is long and a tribute to omnidirectional misplaced anger. This is the company you keep, Piper. Have you no shame?

Gary Kamiya writes at Salon:
American conservatism is at once absolutist and utopian, and reactive and aggrieved. Which state came first is a chicken-and-egg question, but they reinforce each other. Psychologically, conservatives want contradictory things — both pure freedom and an unchanging Golden Age. Pragmatically, they want things that are mutually exclusive — no social contract and an organic, connected community, untrammeled individual rights and a rigid moral code. The inevitable disappointment results in resentment. The reason that the American right always behaves as if it is an angry outsider, even when it controls all three branches of government, is that it is at war not with “liberalism” but with social reality..
Pure. Fucking. Wisdom.

BIAW, through their Affordable Housing Council PAC, is also paying for phone bank calls in support of down ballot candidates, like smaller suburban city council races, especially where the opponent is a Progressive Majority candidate.
Interestingly, it appears the calls are being made from a phone bank in Virginia, yet the caller says they are calling from the Affordable Housing Council in Bellvue.

Basically what we have here is the reactionary elements of Whatcom County complaining about outsiders coming in to campaign. Now let’s ask them if they’ve ever brought in outside money for THEIR campaigns …
Roger Rabbit spews:
You need to have lived in Bellingham, or know someone who did, to understand this hit piece. Ever since 18-year-olds got voting rights, that city’s reactionary elements have hated the fact 10,000 students can vote in local elections. What BIAW is trying to do is stir up decades-old townies-vs-campus hatreds. It’s typical scum work by rightwing hatemongers.
Roger Rabbit spews:
Exactly the same thing was going on in Whatcom County during the 1960s antiwar protests. And by people with exactly the same mindset. Whatcom County has always been a hotbed of rightwing hate politics.

Roger Rabbit spews:
One of the candidates the doorbellers are campaigning for is Steve Oliver, who is running for Whatcom County treasurer. Oliver currently is deputy treasurer.
His opponent is Joe Elenbaas, a farmer endorsed by the Whatcom County Republican Party, which has no problem with entrusting management of the county’s finances to a man who habitually pays his property taxes 3 years late. Elenbaas is a tax protester and government-hater who waits until the day before the county can legally foreclose on his property before paying. Elenbaas also:
– Is facing trial for obstructing a law enforcement officer for allegedly threatening to get a gun from his car when a deputy sheriff ordered him off another person’s property.
– When a local hay company sued Elenbaas for a $2,457 unpaid bill, Elenbaas fought the case all the way to the state supreme court, losing at every stage.
– According to the Bellingham Herald, Elenbaas has been sued for other debts, and has a bankruptcy in his past.
– Elenbaas fired a shotgun at legal papers in the presence of the process server who had just served them.
This is the guy Whatcom County Republicans endorsed for county treasurer. He’s the guy those young people in the photo are campaigning to keep out of the county treasurer’s office. He’s the guy BIAW wants Whatcom County voters to vote for.

1 bay leaf
½ cup chopped celery
2 tsp. salt

Smooth flour with a little cold water and add slowly. When thickened, add chopped parsley and serve.

Turns out Pike is actually a liberal progressive with strong growth management views. So WTF, you might be asking.
The BIAW offered him their endorsement which Pike refused. The BIAW recommended him anyway. It turns out that the BIAW simply hates Pike’s opponent more than they hate Pike.
Anyhow you can see Pike’s response to all this at http://www.pikeformayor.com. See “Entering the Homestretch” on Pike’s Blog. Good reading.
