Now with the USDA preparing to spend millions paying farmers to destroy melamine-tainted hogs, and California officials revealing that about 45 people are already known to have eaten contaminated pork, my journalist friends are beginning to realize that this is more than just a “pet food recall” — humans are at risk. And I fully expect the news to get much worse over the next week or so, as the extent to which adulterated protein concentrates have poisoned livestock feed and other products starts to become known. Worried yet?

Industry has complained for years that FDA is increasingly regulating how doctors practice medicine, and a key Senate Democrat is now compounding their worries. Pharmacy groups last week blasted a draft legislative proposal circulated by Kennedy on pharmacy compounding, obtained by FDA Week. Kennedy may attach the controversial bill to must-pass drug user fee legislation.
Kennedy wants to require doctors to document when compounded medications are needed, FDA Week’s John Wilkerson writes. The draft would also restrict the sale of compounded drugs to be administered in the doctor’s office, and allow FDA to access pharmacy records, resolving a longstanding dispute between FDA and industry that has shifted to the courts.
But pharmacists ask: Why increase oversight when compounding isn’t increasing the risk of adverse events, FDA’s budget is already stretched to the max and state accrediting groups already weed out bad players. And why upset “snowbird” patients who continue to use their hometown’s pharmacy when traveling to warmer climates during the winter?
Now that’s an interesting idea for a grassroots campaign in Kennedy’s home state. Massachusetts should have quite a few snowbirds…
