Santorum Stupak

by Jon DeVore — Monday, 11/9/09, 9:40 am

Already up at the Urban Dictionary:

Stupak–A medical condition (subset of sepsis) resulting from unsafe – unnecessarily so – back alley abortions as a result of the “Stupak Amendment” to the 2009 Health Care Reform Bill.
Doctor: Unfortunately, while this would have been covered under private insurance carriers, public plans were barred from including women’s health measures. I’m sorry, you’ll have to see “Dr. Julio” in the alley behind 7-11.

(Three weeks later.)

Doctor: I believe you’ve developed Stupak, a form of sepsis, a severe illness in which the bloodstream is overwhelmed by bacteria.

I guess you can go to Urban Dictionary and vote if you wish. While there are others worthy of scorn in this sorry episode, Bart Stupak deserves to go down in history as the misogynistic disease that he is. If his barbaric poison pill is in the conference report, there will be political hell to pay.

(Props to Firedoglake and Eschaton.)

AND–From an article at The Hill, here’s a paragraph that neatly summarizes why the Stupak amendment is so asinine:

Stupak’s language not only prohibits abortion coverage in the public insurance option included in the House bill. It would also prevent private plans from offering coverage for abortion services if they accept people who are receiving government subsidies.

So, as far as anyone can tell, that would be virtually all plans.

I’d favor mandatory abortions for folks who can’t afford to pay to raise a kid. Having a kid before you can afford to do so is just plain stupid in this day and age.

It’s easier to pay for a simple abortion (and birth control, for that matter) than it is to pay for a life of public support.

Putting your misanthropic screed aside, you inadvertently hint at the single greatest cause of abortions:

    economic uncertainty

The Bush administration stopped published abortion statistics. Because his economic policies increased the number of abortions.

Anyone wanting to actually reduce the number of abortions (unwanted pregnancies) will support progressive economic policies.

The culture wars are alive and kicking.

I was surprised how many people asked me if I was pro-life.

I replied that I supported policies which would reduce the number of abortions.

Consider: The Netherlands has the most permissive abortion laws and yet has the lowest abortion rate.

Coincidence? No. Dutch parents have economic security. They don’t have to worry if they can support their kids.

Anyone against abortions should be for universal healthcare. Anything less is hypocrisy.

(I acknowledge that we progressives have done a poor job of making our case. We rely too much on facts and figures, not enough on values and morals.)

Well, without the language the bill would not have passed, as the Hill piece makes clear:

Sixty-four Democrats voted for Stupak’s amendment, without which the House healthcare bill would not have won final passage in a 220-215 vote.

And while you’re calling the amendment asinine, let’s just remember that Pelosi heralded the bill’s passage as a great victory.

What most deserves scorn is the screwy senatorial system that allows 40.1% of senators representing 25% of the population to thwart the will of three-fourths of the people.

Small, rural, conservative states are already grossly overrepresented in the Senate due to the fact each state gets 2 senators regardless of population. That was put in the Constitution to preserve slavery, and it’s doing a damn good job of that!!! Maybe it’s time to change the Constitution so the U.S. Senate reflects the “one person, one vote” rule of true democracy, but that’s another issue for another time.

As this is the system we have to live with, let’s make sure Democratic senators understand we want them to use it when Republicans are in power to keep Republicans from passing legislation we don’t like, instead of pathetically rolling over for the White House like they did in 2001-2008 and especially in 2003 when an unelected president who represented less than a majority of the voters wanted a war resolution.

I want to propose a new amendment be added during the conference committee when the House and Senate get together to merge the health-care reform bills. I know the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops will love it, since they are officially members of Congress now. Here it is.

All pro-life male members of Congress who ejaculate without the express intent of making a baby will be considered to have had an abortion. (This will include airport-bathroom encounters.) Under this new rule, the male members then must fall in line with the same restrictions to health care as women will have to under the Stupak Amendment. Then starting in 2013, all men in America will be covered under this provision as well.

That includes all those “goat-fuckers” out there as well.

This morning, Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-FL) participated on a conference call with the Center for American Progress Action Fund’s Judy Feder to discuss Republican efforts to shut out women’s issues in the health reform debate. Feder noted that in 2006, nine Senate Republicans voted to explicitly kill a proposal that would have ensured that insurance companies cannot use domestic violence as a pretext for denying coverage to women. The two went on to discuss how, as the House vote drew near, Republican lawmakers’ disregard for the interests of women became more apparent.

In the House Rules Committee the Friday before the vote, Rep. Pete Sessions (R-TX), who is also the chief recruiter for Republican House campaigns in 2010, justified the practice of insurance companies discriminating against women by comparing gender differences to smokers and non-smokers. The next day — on Saturday morning — Rep. Tom Price (R-GA) and several of his GOP colleagues shouted down congresswomen making 1-minute speeches on the importance of health reform for women. Wasserman Schultz denounced the interruption tactics and Sessions’ comparison of women to smokers as the “Republicans’ back of the hand treatment to women”:

Typical of the forced birth crowd.

Hey headless lucy@28, you can’t hide behind your latest name. Puddy smells you out 24×7.

Puddy been sadly saying this for years

Black teens have the highest teen pregnancy rate. For young women age 15-19, black teens are most likely to become pregnant (134 per 1,000 women). Slightly lower rates occur among Hispanics (131 per 1,000) followed by non-Hispanic whites (48 per 1,000).

Like Puddy said before which falls on the deaf ears of most HA Libtardos and others; black and hispanic peeps don’t listen to GWB and his abstinence programs. So trotting out the UK article is facetious at best. Yet, these same libtardo fools will march onto this blog and scream it’s those peeps in the southern states who voted for GWB without looking at the population demographics. Hmmm…?

Every article Puddy has recently read blames Bush for black & hispanic teenagers whose parents overwhelmingly voted for Gorebasm and Effin Kerry? How stupid and you all fall for it.

“Mothers who were not married accounted for 83.1% of the abortions. Most of the abortions tracked by the CDC were to minorities: 36.9% to African Americans, 20.3% to Hispanics, and 9.0% to “other” (may include some Hispanics). Somewhere between 43% and 45.6% of women had had at least one previous abortion. (The status of 2.6% was “unknown.”) In addition, 59% of women having abortions had already had at least one live birth.” So how many of these women are teens? How many of these are minorities who never would have voted for GWBush.

So much for that stupid article.

Furthrermore, the issues in re abortion go far beyond your willingness to allow someone who is raped to be cared for in a humane way.

The consistent Christians, folks I admire, fight not merely for their position on the blastula as a life but for the social services needed to support the unwanted children. The dcorrolary of opposing first term abortion as birth control, is sepdning the money to offer other methods and then, when those fail, spending the money to assure that the blameless are not treated as bastards.

While we are on the topic of consistency, the very assertion that the blastula is a human life seems to me to lack any biblical support. We have been here before, but before deciding what God wants it seems to me that you need to find the text that justifies your willingness to force God’s will on others.

Can’t Bring Yourself to Type the Word “Ass”?

Eager to share our brilliant political commentary and blunt media criticism, but too genteel to link to horsesass.org? Well, good news, ladies: we also answer to HASeattle.com, because, you know, whatever. You're welcome!

HA Commenting Policy

It may be hard to believe from the vile nature of the threads, but yes, we have a commenting policy. Comments containing libel, copyright violations, spam, blatant sock puppetry, and deliberate off-topic trolling are all strictly prohibited, and may be deleted on an entirely arbitrary, sporadic, and selective basis. And repeat offenders may be banned! This is my blog. Life isn’t fair.
