Well, it’s confirmed… Rev. Ken Hutcherson is a liar. The Stranger’s Eli Sanders talked to AP correspondent Rachel La Corte this morning, regarding her report that Rev. Hutcherson planned to announce a major boycott on national radio. And….
“I stand by the reporting in my story,” La Corte told me.
She’s since talked to Rev. Hutcherson about all this and says: “He insists that I misunderstood him. I don’t feel that I misunderstood him.”
La Corte told me that before she spoke to Hutcherson on Monday, “He’d been trying to get ahold of me all weekend to let me know something he was going to do.” When they finally connected, he told her that he was going to be leading a national boycott of every single company (Microsoft, Boeing, Hewlett-Packard, Nike, Corbis, Vulcan, and RealNetworks) that signed a letter recently supporting Washington’s gay civil rights bill. She asked when he was going to make this announcement, and she says he replied:
“I’m going to be on the Focus on the Family show on Thursday.”
Sanders, who has been tracking down this story, also questions Rev. Hutcherson’s claim that his “boycott” has the support of several major national organizations — including the Family Research Council, the Southern Baptist Convention, and Focus on the Family — claims which neither Sanders nor La Corte have been able to verify. Hmm. I wonder why?
So here’s an interesting thought. Last spring, when The Stranger broke the story that Microsoft pulled its longtime support of anti-discrimination legislation after being threatened with a boycott by Rev. Hutcherson, Microsoft’s denials seemed disingenuous and transparent in light of Hutcherson’s loud and self-aggrandizing claims of credit.
But in light of Rev. Hutcherson’s proven record of lying to the media, um… perhaps Microsoft was telling the truth? Perhaps pressure from Hutcherson had little if anything to do with Microsoft’s decision? Perhaps Hutcherson just seized the opportunity to make headlines for himself? Perhaps he’s just been playing the media for fools all along?
And if so, then the joke’s on him, for whatever his actual influence, Rev. Hutcherson certainly played the lead role in generating the backlash that not only prompted Microsoft to quickly restore its support of the anti-discrimination bill, but to lobby for it harder than ever. Microsoft reportedly applied pressure to several key lawmakers, and while former state senate minority leader Bill Finkbeiner denies they influenced his decision to flip his vote, you can be sure that the largest employer in his district weighs heavily on all his deliberations… of conscience or otherwise.
So if Rev. Hutcherson lied about his role in pressuring Microsoft — just like he lied about this latest fictional boycott — then perhaps the credit he really deserves is for creating the media storm that will ultimately lead to the anti-discrimination bill’s passage after nearly twenty years of close defeats?
I think WA’s gay community owes Rev. Hutcherson a big, wet kiss, smack dab on his lovely, lying lips.
UPDATE:
The Stranger’s Eli Sanders continues to kick the legs out from under the Right Wrong Reverend Hutcherson, who claimed his boycott had support from the Family Research Council, the Southern Baptist Convention and Focus on the Family.
Um… not according to the Family Research Council:
Amber Hildebrand, a spokeswoman for the conservative Family Research Council , tells me that FRC is not supporting Rev. Hutcherson’s boycott of companies that support Washington State’s gay civil rights bill.
“Hutcherson is a good friend of FRC,” Hildebrand told me. “FRC opposes laws protecting people based on the language of “sexual orientation.’ But FRC is not participating in the boycott . We don’t participate in any boycotts.”
And as for the Southern Baptist Convention?
Jill Martin, spokeswoman for the public policy arm of the Southern Baptist Convention, tells me that the SBC is not backing Rev. Hutcherson.
“We have no record of the SBC having a position on the boycott,” she says.
The AP’s Rachel La Corte is a good reporter. There’s no way she could have gotten all this wrong unless Hutcherson intended for her to get all this wrong. He lied. He dissed her.
And when you diss one reporter like this, you diss all reporters. I hope my friends in the media remember this the next time Rev. Hutcherson tries to grab some free press for himself.
thor spews:
The only good thing in all of this – since Finkbeiner put this issue to rest – is that it’s abundantly clear to anyone paying much of any attention that it a particular faction of fairly foaming religious radicals represent the only real organized opposition to adding “sexual orientation” to the long list of things already part of civil rights law in this state. Aside from the state Senate GOP, save Finkbeiner.
The Governor will probably sign the simple change into law sometime before the Superbowl. We’ll have taken care of something pretty basic. Too bad it took 30 years.
Can the drama. This one is a no brainer.

Sweet, another neo-convict is going to get some oxygen to his brain for the first time since birth. Neurons stand by for synaptic firing!
Mark spews:
It is confirmed??!!
“‘cuz I said so” is proof? One would hope that the reporter put enough effort into the original story to be willing to stand by it. ALL you have is a he said / she said (and, yes, I know you’ll stand with her, Goldy, simply becuse it suits your purposes).
Let me be clear. From what little I’ve seen/heard/read about Rev. Hutcherson, I’m no fan of his.
But proof — actual, go-to-court PROOF — is something like the reporter’s microcasette with Hutcherson making the statement. Maybe the voicemail with him saying he’s going to do something leads that direction.
At this point, there is no more proof or confirmation than if I were to say that in your last personal e-mail to me, Goldy, you admitted having a crush on Shark and that while I’ve already deleted the e-mail, I “stand by my story?”
Mark spews:
GratuitousBS @ 1
For one, get your facts straight. I am NOT and never have been a Neo-Con.
Also… get your facts straight. There has been NO proof presented. See my post #2.
Aexia spews:
So how exactly did the AP reporter get the supposedly mistaken impression that he was going to be on Focus on the Family on Thursday? Are you saying she made it up?
Hutcherson is saying she got the wrong idea about what he said. Then what was that “right idea” that he couldn’t get across and gave her the impression he was going to be on FoF’s show on Thursday?
Mark spews:
Aexia @ 4:
It is possible that he had been, for example, called off-air by a FoF staffer and asked about the ISSUE.
If I had to guess at the truth, I’d say he led her to believe that he’d be on the show — without explicitly saying so — perhaps because he talked to FoF and was told by some flunky that they were interested in the story and asked “would you want to come on the air to talk about it” without discussing a real appearance.
Mark spews:
Aexia, Goldy and others…
I am NOT saying he wasn’t lying or that the reporter wasn’t wrong. I’m simply saying that two posts of a dozen-plus paragraphs with NO solid evidence is intellectually dishonest. ASK THE QUESTION? Yes.
Imply that there is some proof that Rev. Hutcherson lied or misled or whatever? Wrong and irresponsible. What is this, the NYT??
Wells spews:
I figure Sodom and Gomorrah had at the most, a 20% homosexual population. So why did God wipe out all the ‘normal’ people? Were they extremely intolerant? Did their intolerance of gays evolve into intolerance for ‘all others’, a sort of mass madness? If so, did this madness initiate from homosexuality or heterosexuality? I’ll bet God wiped out these biblical cities because the ‘normal’ people were total assholes.
Goldy spews:
Mark,
Whether I’ve been on both sides of an interview, and La Corte simply wouldn’t get something like this so wrong if Hutcherson hadn’t intended for her to get it wrong. He deceived her. Most likely, he purposely inflated his local drop-in as an appearance on the local show, knowing that it would be more likely to get him press.
Listen to what she told Sanders… he pursued her with this story. He had important news he wanted out there. He was seeking publicity. And he got it.
Whatever the specifics of what was said between them, I would expect other journalists to be awfully wary in the future when talking to Rev. Hutcherson. He’s destroyed his credibility.
Michael spews:
Well, it’s confirmed… Rev. Ken Hutcherson is a liar…“I stand by the reporting in my story,” La Corte told me.
Umm, I think you misunderstand the usage of the word “confirmed.”
John spews:
Mark,
I’d say we have more than a he said/she said here. If Hutcherson was misquoted in the AP story, why did not say anything? Why did he not call the AP & ask for a correction?
Why on earth did the “I was misquoted” BS not come up till someone called to call him on his lies?
Michael spews:
Why doesn’t she provide a direct quote instead of saying what she thought he said in her own words?
John spews:
Micheal,
“I’m going to be on the Focus on the Family show on Thursday.” – Rev Ken Hutcherson
See those funny little lines before & after that statement, those are called quotes, and signify what is known as a direct quote. Anything else you need cleared up?
Michael spews:
Goldy said that Eli Sanders said that Rachel La Corte said that Ken Hutcherson said that “I’m going to be on the Focus on the Family show on Thursday.” Clear cut, right?
Left Turn spews:
You gotta love the fact that even when the right wing nutbags have been caught dead on in a lie, they still stick to their guns as if winning some sort of debate point will eliminate the fact that Hutch is a lying, cowardly, piece of shit dirtbag, just like most republican, christian conservatives.
GBS spews:
Mark @ 3
My apologies if your not a conservative, I had thought that you were.
If you were a conservative you’d watch Fox News and therefore had been a hypocrite for demanding any truth and/or fact checking be done in the name of journalism.
If you were a conservative you’d listen to the likes of Limbaugh, Sanity, Meddled, Snow, Wilbur, Carlson and/or the other purveyors of deception.
On the other hand, if any of the above applies to you and/or you voted for George W. Bush, then you are a conservative. In which case, I retract my apology because you are in fact a lying, scumbag neo-convict whose whole basis of political perception is based on the lies spun by Republicans.
Mark spews:
Simple solution: Play the reporter’s microcassette (or equivalent) or scan and post the reporter’s notes.
I don’t see where anybody has said, “I reviewed the reporter’s original notes” or EVEN “I [Rachel] reviewed my own notes.” At this point, it is NOTHING except for he said / she said. If Hutcherson has the same issue with other reporters, I could see it being a problem.
The FACT remains that Hutcherson WAS in a “drop-in” segment that aired in Washington State markets. [Hey, Goldy, where is your CORRECTION and UPDATE reflecting Sanders’ own admission that Hutcherson was on the air?] It is entirely possible that either Hutcherson was incorrectly told he’d be national or that he thought the drop-in would be played in more markets.
NEWS FLASH: Not everything you see on TV news, hear on the radio or even read in the paper is locally-produced or even produced just for that outlet. The next time you see a TV news report from some relief mission overseas, look to see if every missionary is wearing the same T-shirt. If so, it is likely a “news package” (quasi-press release) distributed to stations all over the country.
John spews:
So, Micheal, just what will satisfy you? It appears to be nothing less than a full, public admission of his dishonesty by Hutcherson.
Now anyone, who looks at this situation openly & honestly, would have to wonder, if Hutcherson really was misquoted, then why does he refuse to give a straight answer to any of Sanders’ questions? Instead he chooses to play coy with responses to questions about his claimed boycott like “I will let you know, Eli,” Rev. Hutcherson said. “I will let you know.” .
Seems to me that if you have two parties disagreeing over what was said between them, if one party (La Corte) responds directly and openly to questions about the controversy, and the other party (Hutcherson) plays coy games, it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out where the truth lies.
Mark spews:

Mark,
If it’s entirely possible that Hutcherson thought his “drop in” (note not an appearance on the actual show) would be national, why doesn’t he say so? Why does he blame the reporter? Don’t you find it odd that even in your hypothetical defense scenarios Hutch is a liar?

But what relevance is all of this? Lots of “religious” folks lie, cheat or steal, including Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson, and Ken Hutcherson.
Hutcherson has a relatively small congregation, which can’t even afford to own a regular meeting place of its own. Regardless of whether this fellow is “liberal”, “conservative”, or whatever, why is the news media buying up everything that he has to say and taking it as the gospel (small “g”) truth?
Probably more people read Goldy’s blog than attend Hutcherson’s church services.

So after the cable dude hooked things up and left, I spent a while surfing all those channels. In the course of half an hour, among other things I stumbled on the following:
An interview on one of the state political-access channels with a GOP state senator about employee health care. The guy was spouting off about how the government should never be telling business what to do.
The C-SPAN coverage of the Senate hearings on “decency” in the media, wherein Ted Stevens and his buddies were making it clear that government should very much be telling at least that segment of business what NOT to do.
A program on Fox News featuring a discussion on emergency preparedness, led by none other than Mike Brown.
Well, we sort of enjoyed watching a couple of poorly made volcano movies on SciFi later on…
