I’m not a huge college football fan, but I was glad that there will be a 4 team playoff in college football starting in 2014. It seems like the worthiness of the third and fourth choices is often indistinguishable from the second team that actually gets to play for the championship. I imagine there will still be controversies about who gets to play in this tournament. But a debate about who is the number 4 team is very different from a debate about who is the number 2 team.

Republicans should be careful of what they wish for. If SCOTUS strikes down the individual mandate, the public won’t accept the status quo forever, and the alternative to Obamacare is expanding Medicare to cover everyone, which means UNIVERSAL COVERAGE and SINGLE PAYER and PUBLIC OPTION all rolled into one.

Not sure what happened here. This seems to have replaced my earlier piece, complete with Roger’s comment.

Not to worry, Carl, I can shift gears. Maybe WordPress has a ghost inhabiting it.
Roger Rabbit spews:
Now college football has 4 times as many championship games to milk for cash. Anyone who thinks this isn’t about money is living under a rock.

A 4 team playoff is stupid. But reinforces the charade of college sports. So some “student-athletes” will have to play even more games, thus divorcing them even further from actual students.
Just separate the corruption of pro sports from academics already. Let alumni associations take over the sports programs. They can pay players or provide academic scholarships paid for by donors and revenue. The colleges can get fees for licensing, etc.
I didn’t mention pedophilia, but a recent case illustrates the depth of the corruption.

I forgot to add. The entire “controversy” of college football playoffs is driven by 24-hour sports talk having to fill airtime. Until the advent of sports talk we were very happy with the Big 10/Pac 10 winner playing in the Rose Bowl. Now that doesn’t even happen if the “championship” is held there.
The argument over playoff format, “must be certain of who is the best team,” etc. sounds exactly like the bipartisan fetishists in the Village. “If only we had a Grand Bargain, we would stop arguing.” Commenters including sports talk will always find another argument, they have to 24 fucking hours a day!

It’s a step in the right direction.
